maybe you heard that readiohead just released their new album on their own website for free ... well, you may pay as much you think its worth. thatīs an really interesting new concept and the music-industry is going downstairs even faster now. (i remember biohazard singing: "muuuuuusic for you and me, and not the fucking industry)

so my question: how much would you have paid for "The Mix Up" album if it was for free download on the beastie boys website? (provided that the tracks are based on mp3 with a quality of 160kbps and all japanese bonus tracks included).

Mix-up is nice, but the Radiohead record is one of the best things they've made as a band in recent years. So it's not really a level playing field.

I think that idea is retarded. Why in the hell would musicians degrade their art by only releasing it in some crappy, lossy, MP3 format? That's like Picasso painting some awesome work of art in oil paints and then putting it out to the public as a poster. That's like the chef of a 5-star restaurant selling McDonald's hamburgers. Just because the public is too ignorant to realize the lack of quality doesn't mean that artists should pander to that.

I just read that people paid an average of 5 EUR for the new Radiohead-album (and they sold 1,2 Million Albums on the first day). And about 30% of the people didn't pay anything at all.

For the Beastie Boys I would do at least the same as for Radiohead, which means I would buy the super-luxus-hard-copy-edition of The Muix-Up for 60 EUR. :)

I believe there was another group that actually did that idea before but they weren't as big and well known as Radio Head. But I can't remember who it was, so this pretty much means jibberish. A band as huge as radiohead can afford to do that. its good move.

This thread reminds me of when the Beasties had Mix your own Anthology on this site. Anyone Remember that? They had a huge back catalog, remixes and some live tracks to choose from. You created your own custom Double CD anthology, track listed it, and titled it. A week later it arrived at your door fully customized and printed. I still have mine. I thought that was a great idea that used the current music industry and the net and gave fans something they would actually want to buy and take part in. Who's to say what everyone's fav tracks are to make up an Anthology or Greatest hits, so you make your own.

You knwo when a band goes into the studio often theres like 20 tracks recorded and 10-15 make it on the album the others a re Bsides and throw aways. What if the Beasties or another gorup were to put all the tracks from recording session up. and you could choose the 12 to make up a disc and what order they go in. Everyones disc ould have a slighlty different vibe. But in todays media, its pretty much an .mp3 playlist...

That would be neat.

I probably wouldn't have paid anything.

Not because I'm trying to rip them off but because I really didn't enjoy the album at all. If it was something that I liked, then yeah, I would pay a little less than a dollar per song as long as it wasn't some twenty track record.

Personally, I would rather have the actual CD instead of MP3's.

i am a big radiohead fan and paid five pounds, so i can assume i would have paid the about the same for the mixup had the bboys done the same.

it's brilliant, i think, what RH is doing. they're acknowledging what goes on instead of fighting it, just asking for a little courtesy while we're at it.

i'm interested to see the results.

I think Radiohead did what they did for a myriad of reasons:

Generating a news buzz
Experimenting with doing an independent release
Showing their appreciation for their fans and making their music accessible to all
Sticking it to the fat cats running the recording industry
Getting the release out sooner - they will make their money back with the official release
Creating a new standard/trend for other artists to follow

This may work or it may flop...I believe the fans/media/and others paying close attention will help make it work

I think Radiohead did it because they were sick of their music being stolen via so-called fans before the CD is released. I remember Thom saying how upset he was last time when HTTT was released early. As a fan of music, all the leaks of upcoming albums bug me, because I won't steal, and I get sick of everyone hearing new albums from my favorite bands before I do. So for once, I heard the new music from my favorite band at the same time everyone else did, and it was really really nice. They have my $80 for the upcoming box and I was happy to pay it. It was also exciting that all the dumbass reviewers didn't hear it before me, so I formed my own opinion before I read the reviews.

This wouldn't work for a lot of bands. Radiohead doesn't need to make any more money, and they've got to make way more off their merchandise than their CDs anyhow.

As for The Mix Up, I might have paid a little something if I had been able to download the album legally before it leaked. By the time it was actually released, I had sort of lost interest--mostly because I knew it was an instrumental record. It would be a different answer if it was a new album with Beasties' voices.

Were you thinking of Harvey Danger? I remember reading about that somewhere.

I guess I really haven't thought too much about the Mix Up, it's a take it or leave it" sort of disc, but now that you mention it, The beastie boys releasing a instrumental album is pretty much akin to a Doo Wop band releasing an instrumental album. A true complete mix up, sort of defeats the purpose.

I think the boys missed a HUGE opportunity (Radiohead experiment) to get there Mix Up album out there while they were touring earlier this lst summer.

Oh well, we live and learn.

I didn't know what it was going to be like going in because I didn't download the leak or anything but I bought it because I figured it would be good since it was from the Boys.

Not hating on em or nothing, I just really didn't like this album.
