Running Down a Dream (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2613902181249064171&q=Trailer+for+the+Tom+Petty+film+%22Runnin%27+Down +A+Dream%22&total=2&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0) the 4 disc box set will be available next week.
The box set contains (http://www.starpulse.com/news/index.php/2007/10/11/runnin_down_a_dream_chronicles_the_early):
- 2 DVD, four hour Director's cut of Runnin' Down A Dream. Includes Eddie Vedder, Rick Rubin, Roger McGuinn, Dave Grohl, Johnny Depp, Jeff Lynne, Stevie Nicks, Jackson Browne, and more.
- 1 DVD of the emotional 30th Anniversary Concert in Heartbreaker hometown, Gainesville, Florida
- 1 CD of recordings and rarities drawn from the film, several never before released.
The documentary is directed by Peter Boganovich. Tom and the Heartbreakers have been putting out solid work for 3 decades. I agree with Dave Grohl's sentiments in the above linked trailer, Tom is a badass.

I'm glad you pointed this out. I'd like to see the movie in a theater but it looks doubtful that it will get a big enough release.
I have mixed feelings. I was a HUGE Heartbreakers fan but I don't like him solo. I have no interest in hearing what Johnny Depp has to say about him, but I would like to hear what his ex-drummer and ex-wife have to say. I suppose the ex-wife won't be in it? (She was married to him for decades and mentioned in key songs so it's not just purient interest.) In that clip, Tom talks about the importance of having the guys in the band and the one link being missing. I assume he means his second bass player because that was the photo on screen. But he's also missing his drummer. I'm interested in the story about how the first bass player came back though.
I have serious doubts about Bogdanovich as director. He's never seemed like a music fan so I wonder what drew him to this.
It will definitely be worth seeing.
Oh, and when they had the clip of him playing on that tour with Dylan -- that was the worst concert I've ever seen at a big venue. Horrible, horrible sound. 20 years on and my brother is still complaining about it. :p

Bogdanovich has showed real interest in music in the past -- look at the soundtrack for Last Picture Show, or murdering classic songs in
At Long Last Love. (Or Cybil Shepherd's Cole Porter album he pushed her into.) I don't think that's the problem.
The problem is he's a pretty dubious biographer. He let Orson Welles edit the interview/biography they wrote, to the point where
Orson would change things he and Bogdanovich said "for effect," or even deleting a whole section where he discussed other directors
because he thought it would be hurtful. I just doubt this will be objective at all. It'll just be a love letter to Tom, I bet.

It appears that the nearly four hour Tom Petty documentary is starting on the Sundance Channel in two hours (9 p.m. central time).
I am leaving the house in a moment and I don't have tivo so I'm going to try and find a tape for my ancient VCR and try to remember how the timer works. :o
I didn't know that I had the Sundance Channel. I think I only have it for another few days because I'm dropping my premium channels on account of there being nothing on HBO anymore.

Watched about 2 minutes of it on Sundance tonight and then told myself this is bullshit, went and spent the $29 on it @ Best Buy. Better sound and picture quality with 2 extra disc's, one of a live show and another of unreleased stuff.
The Sundance channel is repeating it again twice (http://www.sundancechannel.com/films/500254630) this week.
I peeked in on the first meeting 'tween Producer Jimmy Iovine and TP and in less than 30 seconds I knew I had to own this. Looks great, be sure to watch it.
Most folk don't know........ Tom is a badass.

I watched the first disc so far. I have some gripes about it from a movie standpoint, but it's made me remember that Damn the Torpedos is one of the best albums I ever played to death as a teenager. You Tell Me is one of the best songs ever.
Also, I've always been in love with Benmont Tench. ;)
