I can't claim to be an expert, but I can offer my personal perspective.

Until I am relatively wealthy, I can't really benefit from policies which encourage accumulated personal debt/wealth. Furthermore, under the incumbent government, my value as intellectual capital is null and void. I can not receive government assistance to study (and better myself and my contribution to the economy) as I am not considered technically 'independent'. At 26 years of age, I would be 'independent' if I lived with my parents, but am not so as a married adult. Clearly, John Howard doesn't believe my wife needs my financial contributions.

I find no relevance in policies which go further than these to protect the aged and infirm (who have no value to my world) than they do to ensure that my children would grow up in a country stabilised by sensible social planning. The continued preference shown for trades over tertiary education, militarism over socialism, and the past over the future means that no matter which way I vote, it ultimately could never, ever be for a Prime Minister who devalues my place in society as expertly as John Howard. Sack the little cunt.

I was a fully functioning member of society. I've exceeded $18 000 loooong ago. It's all because I'm married. I'm independent except for the fact that I went and got married and now contribute to two people's lives instead of just my own. Yet living at my parents (at nearly 27) would qualify me.

^ my boyfriend and I had a discussion about being classified as Independent for YA purposes - at a time when you need financial assistance most (while studying) you're forced to earn in excess of 17k to prove that you qualify for a handout. Earned 15k? too bad, fuck off and earn some more money, you snivelling shit.

They really need to re-jig the whole university/money situation. I was undertaking a fulltime study load (20+hrs a week) and out of work earlier this year, but was refused YA because my study load came from two seperate courses. I was shoved onto the dole, only to have some fuckwit tell me what I could have told them at the beginning - that I can't be on the dole because I'm a student. So, I fell through the cracks.

Also, the housing affordability/rental crisis is high on my list of things to fix NOW. Whoever has the best policies in regards to these things will win my vote, I suppose.

Failing that, the best looking candiate will get it. Yeah, I'm superficial even when it comes to serious election bidness.

HE'S GONE. JOHN HOWARD IS GONE. He's conceded and Kevin Rudd has claimed victory. He still may even be voted out of parliament altogether if Maxine McKew gets up in Bennelong, only the second time a sitting Prime Minister has lost his seat in Australia.

A 5.3% (or thereabouts) swing against the coalition looks like giving the Labor Party a 22 seat majority in the House of Reps, with hopefully the Greens holding the balance of power in the Senate, but most likely the Coalition will hold it.
