It seems like the music world as a whole is stale right now. I try to keep up with whats going on in it as much as one person can. Im constantly searching for music on myspace linking from one band to the next band trying to hear someting new or interesting. Mtv, or even Mtv2 are just bad jokes to me, and I dont even bother. I've still had a really hard time finding something that even catches me off guard tho. Maybe its just my age showing or something,(32) but I really haven't been blown away by any new band or artist since Nirvana. (insert joke about my age here) But, I actually remember what I was doing the day I first heard smells like teen spirit! I had to find that album immediately and get whatever else they had put out prior to it, and already making plans to see them live. Now, what does that have to do with the beastie boys you might be asking yourself? The only other time that same feeling hit me was when I bought the album Check your head. Granted I didnt need to find all their previous albums since I had already been a fan and wore my LTI and Pauls boutique tapes completly out (heres where the other age joke goes) yes I said tape-cassetes...(im 32) I digress, the point is, I was a skateboarder at the time when Check your head came out, songs from that album were in all the skate videos afterwards. Everyone was rushing to see them live, they were all over MTV. And everyone was talking about them. They totally influced that whole time period in so many ways. Not just with their music, but also with their taste in other music, and their style. Go back and find some thrashers from the early 90's. Every skater, myself included, was rockin adidas or pumas. period. That was just because the beastie boys rocked them...Hell, we even started wearing beanies in 90 degree weather just because of the so whatcha want video, thats ridiculous if you think about it. But true...But more importantly, they gave us a soundtrack to our lives at that time. Some of my best memories in life have the beastie boys playing in the background of them.
Now, like I said earlier I try to keep up with current music. Ive listened to a lot of really good bands over the years I think. Anything from the blood brothers, modest mouse, matisyahu, aesop rock, foo fighters, to hot water music, I even like the new T.I. joint, top down. The list could go on and on, my itunes is so random...it jumps all over the place....But, I really miss that feeling of hearing an album or song for the first time and just being completly blown away by it! Dont get me wrong, I've loved all the albums that have followed check your head just the same. And the Mix up gets its fair share of play time. I just wish something big would happen to the music world, like the day Micheal Jackson, the king of pop, was taken over by grunge music from seattle. It would be great if the same thing would happen again, except this time if it were the beastie boys knocking kanye west, or my chemical romance, or whoever, out of the top spot. I love the beastie boys and dont want them to ever forget that they have helped shape a whole generation and could easily do it all over again! Personally, Im sick of all the skinny ass jean wearing dudes with chick haircuts singing/screaming about ex-girlfrinds doing them wrong and how bad they have it, or justin timberlake dancing around trying to bring sexy back. If anyone else feels the same way, or just wants to make fun of my ramblings and mis-spellings...(or on the other hand, has some really good music suggestions,) please post away...I look forward to it.
(Disclaimer: The previous writings are just my opinions, please take them for what they are worth. Im not a great writer, nor do I claim to be, or a previous spelling bee champion, so please overlook that too. Thank you in advance.)

They could make something definitive again, but I doubt they can be bothered. The other reason possibly rhymes with Wario G.

tl;dr

there is good music these days, but popular music needs to be turned on it's head soon (i.e. The Beatles, Sex Pistols, NWA, Nirvana, etc.) or things will get really really bad. And I don't mean the Beastie Boys should do this, I just mean in general. Some young group needs to make something that connects with enough people to sell a ton of copies despite being considered unmarketable and turn the mainstream on it's head. Indie music is sort of doing it, but a lot of those bands seem to be happy to fit in once they make it.

the biggest influence in pop music recently has been Timbaland, but
I don't think there's been a big, culture-changing band since Nirvana.
Everyone started to get excited about the Arctic Monkeys a while back, but that sort of fizzled. I hope someone comes along soon, I agree, things are a little boring of late.

I like the Arctic Monkeys a lot, but they didn't manage to make much of an impact on the west side of the Atlantic. I was surprised how many excited high school kids were at the show I went to though.

yea it does seem like it kinda sucks, but thats only because the music on the radio and MTV sucks. Theres plenty of good music, but way more crappy stuff.
A new group that i love: Blu & Exile. Get their album, Below the Heavens, NOW! If you're a fan of good, pure hip-hop you'll love this shit. I will say that its mos def one of my favorite albums of the year, possibly my favorite (yes over the mix-up, sorry). YOU GOTTA HEAR IT!

Thanks for the suggestions and comments. Its nice to know Im not alone. I checked out the artic monkeys...reminded me too much of the killers, the strokes, and all those new york/british rock bands.. I dig the drumming tho...speaking of drumming...Travis barkers re-mix of soulja boy is pretty cool...

HA. I guess we are getting old. I can still appreciate great music though. I'd even consider myself pretty hip and totally open minded when it comes to music. I hear that Courtney Love is making a movie about the life of Kurt and Nirvana, that should be interesting.

I do like Tenacious D quite a bit. Funny @$$ stuff! P.O.D was a great movie!

You know you're getting old when ... The golden age is always past. They don't make it like they used to. Back in my day ... Seems when something really new and innovative comes along, most people don't like it, it seems weird, too subtle, I-could-do-that, blah, blah, blah. So, it must be that all this current "bad music" is really tomorrow's genius music. I agree, nothing is blowing my mind like it did when I was a teenager or even in my 20s, but I run into good stuff all the time. Maybe we get jaded as we get older. It seems like it's harder to be impressed the older I get. It's like when you get to that point when, no matter how hairy the bud is, you just don't get high any more.
