anyway the reason i posted this thread is, i was watching goodfellas (again) yesterday, specifically the special edition DVD. it has a really amazing commentary track on it, which features the real life henry hill, and the FBI agent who got him into the witness protection program. it seriously reinvented the movie for me, listening to him talk about his experiences as they were portrayed in the movie.
the most striking thing about it is how thankful he actually was to finally get out of the life. the way the movie ends, you'd think he felt like a schmuck getting out, but he actually couldn't be happier. he keeps saying stuff like "god bless the government, god bless the witness protection program, i can't believe how brainwashed i was", it was interesting as hell.
it's also cool to hear him talk about the real life versions of the characters. especially paulie; in the movie paulie comes off as a sort of lovable papa bear type figure, but apparently he was a ruthless fucking bastard. tommy was apparently even crazier than in the movie; much bigger too. henry says that when he heard tommy got killed, he was actually relieved, because he was scared of him at that point. jimmy was an ultraviolent nutcase too, it seems.
he also has nothing but wonderful things to say about morrie (the wig guy), which is weird because in the movie he comes off as kind of a prick. but when he died in the movie, apparently henry was getting visibly upset, thinking about it. they also bleeped out his name from the commentary track; i think he might have been jimmy hoffa
anyway if you have that DVD i suggest you listen to that commentary, and if you don't, i recommend that you rent it

I love this movie. I have basically been watching it on repeat in my room for a couple days. I just read the book Wiseguy, which is what the movie is based on. I wasn't dissapointed. One of my favorites scenes is the Morrie Wig Scene, and in the book Jimmy was an insomniac and when he would turn on the tv at 3 in the morning and Morrie's stupid commercials would come on, he would get more and more pissed off.
Hey Bob 2 questions
1. Have you ever seen the Pope of Greenich Village and
2. Have you ever played Grand Theft Auto Vice City.
1: no
2: yes (is this a ray liotta related question?)
but yeah, this is definitely my favorite movie. it was even before i listened to that commentary, but it's even moreso now. i mean, you "know" it's based on a true story to begin with, but when you have the actual guy talking about what actually happened as it's happening in the movie, i dunno, you look at it in a different light.
it's kind of weird at first; they must have the microphones set up strangely, or henry must be really old or something, because throughout the whole commentary, you can kind of hear him breathing heavily, even when he isn't speaking. it's off-putting at first, but you stop noticing it after awhile.

The man was a pimp. Great haircut too.
That commentary sounds cool. I have the old dvd without any special features. I'm waiting for a special edition blu-ray, if it ever comes out.
Check out The pope of Greenich Village. So Italian you can smell the Mozarella. Its a really good movie, nuff said.
A year ago I had played vice city nearly half way and lost my memory card. After watching Goodfellas I had a hankering for some more Liotta narration and started over, finishing the game in nearly 40 hours.

one thing about that scene that i didn't notice until i listened to the commentary is that you can see the bullets in the gun. he said he specifically remembers seeing the coppers in there and her hands shaking and saying that was probably the most scared he's ever been to have a gun pointed at him (and there was competition!)
anyway that's scene #243232 of goodfellas that i can't shut up about

Little known fact. Frank Dileo, who played Tuddy Cicero at the cabstand, was Michael Jackson's manager in the mid to late 80's.

...so, wait: she wasn't just pointing at the camera?
Wow. At lot of actors won't even read when it's the other person's close-up, let alone
have a loaded gun pointed at them when they're off camera.

Henry Hill is a friggin idiot!! What a moron. He should thank the goverment and his lucky stars that he's not like the people he loved and cheerished. A guy like that should not live to tell his story, much less make money off it.

no no no, i'm talking about the henry hill commentary -- the real henry hill, not ray liotta.
