The fact is the word "gay" has taken on a different meaning, not just among people my age but by people as old as 30 (who I know). "Gay" in the way I often hear it is a mild and frivolous way of expressing negativity towards something, and is not said homophobically. The people who use it like that do not have a problem with actual homosexual people, and some of them are themselves. That's just the way it is, language is a funny thing- accept it.

That's what I originally thought about this thread. Then it became this bizarre battle between Kid P and Turd/Lopp. Entertaining for sure but a bit off of topic.


Not to be the guy who sinks the ship but Padster, I know you may mean well with this thread, but given the incredible pile of things you've said over the years about the concept of 'gay', I can't rightly take this thread seriously. Well, as seriously as you can take this message board at times.

I'll assume for the moment you are sincere, naive as I am, and give my two cents.

I think that the way certain language is thrown around on this board many people would find it too difficult to answer this question with a 'yes'. There would be too much fear of repurcussions. I know 90% of the people here are probably good people who don't think that homosexuality is bad/negative/problematic. And they would likely open up and be understanding of someone's 'coming out', etc. But there's 10% who wouldn't, I won't name names, and there'd be a constant assault on their sexuality until they got fed up and left. So, you won't find many here who will open up about this sort of thing here. Not if they read this board enough.

he could only out himself after his parents died and by that time he was already like 38, married and had 3 kids

i think most people, regardless of sexuality, can tell the difference between using gay, faggot, etc. as an explicative or an adjective describing a negative thing, and between actually calling a homosexual person a name out of hate.

people that get super offended by it need to chill the fuck out. ive used thos words with actual gay people in jest, and they get it. they use them too. my friends that are spics and kikes? yep. i call them that. i have one friend in particular that i'll say the most horribly offensive things i can, and he fires right back, and i know we both have a good time with it.

I think that saying people who are offended by it "need to chill the fuck out" is particularly closed minded. You've used the word fag around some actual gay people? Well, it must be okay then! What you're saying is that sometimes, people will not be offended by it (not that they "get it" - what is there to get?) and it's probably socially acceptable to you to use derogatory terms around these people that you know and are comfortable with.

That doesn't make the word acceptable to use at large, and nor does it excuse any offense you may cause when using it.

At my school and in the area I grew up, it was (primarily) used as a slur against kids who were of Lebanse, Turkish, Maltese descent, and to a lesser extent kids who were of Greek and Italian descent.

I think it has different applications or something...I just know of it from what I experienced growing up.
