View Full Version : what do you use in your hair?

i've never really been happy with any of the hair products i've tried. the best one i've found yet is the one i'm currently using; it's this molding wax (http://www.hairproducts.com/view_product_STY-SPE118.htm). i'm pretty happy with it; it holds pretty much all through the day, it looks pretty clean in the hair (unless you use too much), it doesn't flake, it smells great. but there's things i would change; it makes my hair feel kind of gross when you touch it. sort of vaguely sticky, i dunno, it's hard to explain. it doesn't feel clean (but it looks alright, and smells great).

what else is out there for a guy to try? i've tried a few things, but i've never really been very happy with anything. gel doesn't work so hot because it kind of stops working at some point in the day, and then you get this flaky white shit in your hair (and it's not dandruff). i don't like hairspray. i've tried some fiber gum putty something or other, that was just messy and it didn't work so well (smelled good though).

my hair currently looks like this (http://img362.imageshack.us/img362/2050/atworkmk1.jpg), for reference (yes, i get bored at work and take pictures of myself sometimes)

This. (http://www.garnier.co.uk/_en/_gb/our_products/products_styling.aspx?tpcode=OUR_PRODUCTS^PRD_STYL ING^FRUCTIS_STYLE^FRUCTIS_STYLE_DISCOVER^STYLE_SUR F&prdcode=P60061)

It's fantastic. You can create a really spikey do with good hold, but it looks like you haven't put anything in your hair.

your hair is pretty thick and straight, so it's hard to get something to hold it without being kind of gross.

a company called Crew makes pretty good men's products. maybe you can get samples at a salon or something www.americancrew.com

this shits "waterproof" (http://mp.hairboutique.com/_images/products/got2b_glued_styling_spiking_glue_350w.jpg)

my brother uses it for his fuckup hair in the past. and I used to use it back in the day when I had long hair because it was the only thing that would cut the frizz when I wanted to just have perfect curls (though Id thin it out with regular gel)

and when you buy gel, dont buy the shit thats tailored for homophobic men like dippety doo or whatever
get some good quality gel and you shouldnt have that flakey white stuff problem

gel by nature is dippety doo or whatever, but murray's (the orange tin one) is made for afros. shit's qual-eye-tay (http://www.murrayspomade.com/history.html).

la looks fiber paste. use just a little at a time. you can make your hair look wild or normal and it isn't thick or greasy or hard and crusty like gel. and it only makes your hair look wet if you use it with wet hair. it makes your hair very.... moldable?

you have to be careful with it though. all you need is just a dab. it's very easy to go overboard with it. the first time i tried it i use like how much i would use for gel and it was WAAAAAAY to much. it like fucking turned my hair into wet fiberglass or bondo.

in the summer time, a number one clipper attachment and in the winter, a number two.

Ive been through having feathered, spiked, long and all other kinds of styles. I prefer to just shave it and I bought a pair of clippers. I'm saving money on haircuts and hair products. Plus the buzz cut is timeless.

word, that's how i rolled for years. i've recently started growing it a bit longer and using products. i've got a couple, just testing some out. the only thing is it takes that extra time in the morning. but then a lot of people have told me it looks a lot better, so yeah, will probably stick with the longer hair for a while.

this thread makes me lol. it's like if a bunch of girls got together and started talking about what engine oil they use.

I spritz this when I my hair is wet - it makes my curls curly rather than frizzy

Curl enhancer (http://pics.drugstore.com/prodimg/85642/200.jpg)

And other than shampoo/conditioner, I sometimes whack on this stuff frederic fekkai (http://www.fredericfekkai.com/products/product_detail.cfm?product=15&category=3) but it's quite expensive so I use it on special occasions

i use paul mitchell gloss drops and some other stuff... but that's not relevant to you as i am trying to control crazy curls.

for you... i recommend AVEDA (http://www.strawberrynet.com/images/products/04645274304.jpg) brilliant universal styling creme. it's what my husband uses and he has a thick, straight hair.
it's brilliant *ahem* and smells great. it ain't cheap tho.

i think it's got some crazy pheromones in it as i always want to jump on my man when he's just put it in.

I am so out of touch. I don't wear cologne or hair gel.

If I did use hair products I would grease my hair into a ducktail with Dapper pomade.

i'm in the same boat as you yeti

i never put anything in my hair, and i have a bottle of cologne that i got 4 years ago still mostly full sitting in my bathroom

agreed. that shit is awesome. i finally got my husband to try some and now he won't do anything else.

i do have a recommendation on how to apply. if you want hold, but not put a lot of stuff in your hair, i suggest taking a small bit in your hand and rubbing it around (kinda like just putting lotion on your hands) and then just lightly "buff" your hair with your hands instead of just working it all in and using it all. this usually works well with a finishing product, but it could work well with mens products too. after you buff it in, wipe the remainder off your hands and then work in what you have buffed onto your hair.

i use this trick daily. if you ever think a product is too heavy or makes your hair too "greasy" it's probably b/c you're putting too much in. try the "buff" technique. plus it's fun to say "buff".

whatever stuff my girlfriend has bought. I recognize that green stuff, I remember it being ok.

look at me, i'm drederick tatum, i have effortless hair and girls like me YOU'RE NOT HELPING

thanks for all the recommendations, everybody else. it'd be cool if i looked good with a shaved head, but i don't. i have a funny shaped skull and my hair sticks straight up when it's too short. i'd look like a porcupine, that would be no good.
