It was a humorous gimmick. Fashion designer Marc Ecko purchased Barry Bonds 756th Home Run ball and allowed internet voters decide what to do with it. (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/26/sports/baseball/27ball.html) While 19% wanted to launch the ball into space, and 34% wanted to give it to the Hall of Fameas is, the winning majority (47%) voted to give the ball to Hall, but only after branding it with an asterisk first, a sign of baseball fans disapproval of Bonds alleged steroid use.
Now, Bonds says should Ecko go through with branding the baseball, and the Hall of Fame go through with accepting the ball (which they have said they would), he will boycott the Hall of Fame. Should he be inducted, Bonds told Jim Gray, interviewing him on MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann tonight (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21586470/), "that he would won't be part of it, I won't be there, you can call me but I won't be there."
Barry Bonds has done more to ruin baseball than anyone in the history of the sport.

Dude, click the link and watch the video of him being interviewed. He's such a scumbag.
Mark Ecko better not puss out of putting the asterisk on the ball now. I think it's great that Bonds is obviously pissed about his steroid-induced Home Run record being ruined by Ecko.
I hope they don't even elect his fraudulent ass.

Holy crap...I mean I can see why he would be pissed and if he goes along with it that's almost admitting that he used steroids but man boycotting the HOF is crazy. I still can't decide who is worse for baseball him or A-Rod

It's like he's already "Big-Timin'" the HOF?!?!?!!
Who is he to dictate to them what they should do? Anyone in any profession who would be lucky (and there is a degree of luck involved) enough to be elected to the HOF of that profession should consider it an honor that few people achieve in their lives.
Who the fuck does he think he is?
He's a cheater and I hope he never gets in.
Let Pete Rose in and ban Bonds for life.

heres my quick two cents:
while Bonds is and has always been a big douche with a head the size of a beer keg and hands the size of coffee cans, Mark Ecko should have stayed out of this mess from the beginning... I have a problem with an outside, independent source (a fashion designer/graffitti artist ??) bidding $700,000 on a piece of history, deciding to do a completely biased internet poll, and then "offering" the ball to the Baseball Hall of Fame with an asterisk..."its what the people voted !"
its not ecko's place, or the people who voted, for that matter, to decide that the ball gets the asterisk... its up to MLB and the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown...
put it this way, the * is a completely random symbol that a "collector" branded on a piece of American history, whether its tainted or not...
he could have the ball branded with any symbol, he could take a big dump on it for all i care, but the * doesnt really represent anything besides that some private buyer(who is looking for a good publicity stunt) vandalized a ball thats worth three quarters of a million dollars...
if it goes to the Hall, there might as well be a plaque next to it with ANOTHER asterisk, saying this ball was branded by a completely random fan and has nothing to do with MLB or the Hall of Fame...
pretty cheap way for the Hall to basically say "no comment" if you ask me

how can you vandalize your own possession?
I don't even care about baseball, but I think they should just take the ball.
The asterisk doesn't mean nothing, it means that his record ball, his record, is a record with conditions. They can't deny how many home runs he hit, but they can question how he got them.
Ecko is just one of the few people who could afford to spend that kind of money on the ball. He's enough of a fan to care, but not a fanatic who would never tarnish the holy tradition of baseball by insulting one if its (anti) heroes.
Bonds to boycott the hall of fame? How about all the fans who boycott the sport of baseball because of Bonds. Screw him.
