with a capital B. i have a french test in 7 hours and i dont speak french :(
i managed to BS my way though the first half of the semester, even making a 93.5 on the second test....
third test i made like a 75 on and this one, well, it's not looking like it's gonna go much better
the class goes SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fast and i just wish i had some time to catch up, but i barely have time to do the normal amount of work just to turn in my homework daily, let alone do anything extra to better my understanding.
i made a bad decision in registering for this class
heiress can i borrow your french knowledge for the day plz?

here's the deal. i signed up for this accelerated french class, it's 101 and 102 combined into one semester. ive had no prior study of french at all. i spoke to the teacher before registering and told her i had no knowlage of french but that i had studied several other languages, and she and i both thought that would help me along enough that i would be ok.
to be honest, i expected french to work pretty much the same as spanish, just with different words, but you know, same grammar.
no.
and my spanish leaks out at random times, ruining my pronunciation and confusing my grammar and sometimes making me use words that are not french.
class meets 3 times a week and for every class period there is several hours worth of homework due. doing the very minimum in homework takes up soooo much of my time, so putting any real extra effort into it doesn't seem very feasible.
the general goal of the class i think is to come out of it with the language skills of a 6 year old. i think right now i'm at about a 2 year old with a speech impediment. and really, you're expected to have studied french beforehand. to register for the class you have to take a placement test and score a certain number on it. but i didnt have to take the placement test cause the teacher seemed confident that i would be ok.
pfff, that's the last time i try to challenge myself.

no love, just my test raping me. on a humerous side note though, weds i had to give an oral presentation and i got the grade back today. she said that although there were errors, my french sounds very natural and i got full credit on the oral part
i guess my secret plan worked. i cant pronounce things well so i just kinda mumble and slur. im pretty sure thats what french people do anyway. i used to have this dreams where like, well if i ever took a bite of something in my dream or got something in my mouth, for the rest of the dream even if i swallowed it i coudlnt speak correctly and my words were muffled and mumbled and my mouth felt weird. thats kinda what french sounds like to me. the dreams were always really upsetting for some reason.

In college, I got totally fucked.
I took introductory French, which the catalog described as being for someone with no French language experience, right?
So what happens? We're a month into the class and everyone's sailing along except me, and I can't figure it out. I talked to my instructor
about it. Turns out I was the only one who'd never taken French; everyone else had taken at least two years.
I protested that I shouldn't be expected to learn as fast as people who were, at worst, brushing up on their skills, and the instructor basically
just said tough luck. I asked if there were an introductory class that was really for people with no French experience, and he said
"this is it."
Fuck that. I dropped the course.

Yeah, I think mine is basically like that, times two, cause like I said, it's 101 and 102 combined. I tend to be really good at picking up languages but we go so fast nothing really has time to sink in.
I cant decide if i want to take 201 next semester. It will just be extra hours, it won't count for anything, but, well, I've taken a lot of of foreign language and for one reason or another never really get very far in them.
On the one hand I'm struggling with French right now. On the other hand, it would only go at half the pace of my current class. Je ne sais pas.

flashcards are more for memorizing words. memorizing shit tons of words isnt really my issue. its implementing grammar that's the problem. well, that, and the fact that i cannot look at a french work on paper and know how it is supposed to be pronounced. i can know a word and what it means and see a word written and not know that its the same word sometimes.
i dot know. i guess it just comes down to the class going way the fuck too fast, and me not really having any time to practice on my own.

I did my French written exam entirely in English. Wondered why I didn't pass it. I've probably learned more French from the internet, movies, films and random French people since leaving school than I ever did in a class.

sometimes i'm really tempted to just write some shit in spanish. usually when i cant think of how to say something in french, it pops into my mind in spanish (or rarely as a german word). like while in struggling in french the english part of my brain switches off and just tries to piece it's ideas together in whatever random language information it has.
but im pretty sure it would piss her off if i did that...

it took four years of spanish in hs. it's amazing how much you loose if you don't use it.
