View Full Version : Becoming A Regular
How many times do you have to eat at the same place?
I like being a regular, but I think I move too often to be one yet. I'm angling for the local Quiznos where I work, but it's pricey - and everyone there has either spanish or hindi as their first language. I'm not even sure if they like me.

I went to the chippy for dinner 3 times last week, and on the third time they asked me if I wanted "the usual".
That was my cue to stop going there.
That and the seven heart attacks.
You are a regular when the staff knows your name and/or if they ask if you want the usual.

There are a couple of places where I don't have to tell them what I'm going to order. I'm a regular at a few other places, but I mix it up elsewhere.

I suppose I'm a regular at this one family owned joint called Flamingos in Jersey city being that its where I eat during my break.
Nothin beats walking into a joint and yellin, "ay yo Mario, gimme da meatloaf parm!" and washin it down with a budweiser.
It was nice walking into the local brewery and having everyone shout "ROCK!", norm style. Sad too.
the subway near where i work knows me (but they've still screwed up my order even though i get the same thing every time i go)
and every dunkin' donuts i go to regularly knows me. i can think of at least 3 dunkin' donuts i can go to and have my coffee waiting for me before i even get to the register. they see me in line and know what to make. i'm not sure i like that actually

there's a local subway I used to frequent where it always seemed to be the same chick when I went, so when I say "a ridiculous amount of pickes" she knows that i mean 2 and a half handfulls.
and the pub where I used to go alot for kareoke/rock trivia nights the MC of both activities calls me "pilsner girl"
yee
haw.
i used to go to wendy's so often that when i pulled up to the drive thru before i could say my order they would just tell me to pull up. sad but true.

when I was a bartender I loved my regulars.(y)
when I was a bartender I loved my regulars.(y)
when i was a regular i loved my bartenders.
All of the close friends I've made over the past 6 or 7 years have been my bartenders or waiters from my two usual watering holes. Ahhhh the good ole days of going out almost every night. I miss that shit...sort of.

I have been eating at a local chinese restaurant for almost 10 years now. My kids have been going there as long as they can remember. The restaurant employees don't know our names, but they call us "coke, Dr. Pepper, coke, and Sprite" whilst pointing at us.

theres a guy that comes in every weekday at lunch time to one of the places i work. he gets the same thing every day. apparently, he's been doing this for something like 6 years now. sometimes he comes in for dinner. whenever he comes for dinner, he gets NOT the usual.
essentially he gets a sandwich that's not on the menu anymore, and we dont have all the stuff to make it, but we do the best we can. so it's entered in as
Garden Sand
-DOC
Doc gets free sodas. Doc always shows the new employees how to memo in "doc" the first time they get him.

If Viktor is working at Debaser he always pulls out a pear cider for me. Sometimes I drink ale, too, but I don't want to dissappoint him.
Oh yeah and you know you're a regular when you know the bartender's name (we don't have nametags here).

I think being a regular anywhere besides a bar is kind of embarrassing. I don't know why. My family used to eat at this one italian restaurant all the time and my parents were all buddies with the owners when we went in. I was embarrassed. I was also a teenager.
I go to subway a lot, but it's cheap and right across the street...and the people there aren't friendly so they don't say, "heyyy! turkey?!" I am also unfriendly. and I get different things every time.
I go to 7-11 down the street a lot too for various things, and the people are always very nice, but they don't act like my best friend. I like them a lot. At the 7-11 by my old house, they knew me and sometimes gave me free stuff, it ruled.
I am embarrassed.

Working in the liquor industry, 'the usual' and 'regulars' is like watching a stop-motion sequence of somebody's death. Pretty cool.

fact: if you're a regular somewhere, and the people don't know your name, they call you something. probably something related to what you order all the time.
at my work theres "potato lady"
at my other work theres "slim 4 and a cookie"
there's also "bald headed cock face"
we don't like him very much
oh yeah, and "smelly autistic guy"

that reminds me, some girl at the liquor store recognizes me as a regular. she's kind of cute i guess, but for some reason i feel like being noticed because i buy booze so often isn't going to work in my favor
i actually try to avoid her because i don't like the idea of people noticing my alcohol buying habits

I'm doing the liquor store thing these days. When this one woman comes in reeking of booze, and I've got her $8 bottle of wine already wrapped up (at 11am), she couldn't be happier.
Me, I'd prefer it if we could buy weed.

I always go to the bar down the street from where I work with my boyfriend. The bartender says, "Water again?" I say, "On the rocks." I'm hard like that.

Maybe this is your chance to subtly impress her?
"Oh my Robert, Courvoisier again?"

the guy at the convenience store next to my work knows me
pretty sure they know me at the sushi place across the road from work
i feel no shame

more like "oh, i see you've found a beer with 7.8% alcohol per volume, i didn't know we carried that!"

steger and i go to a sushi place down the street almost every week. (ed, barb, and chewy have all eaten with us there.) i'd say they know us. once we took his parents there and they gave us so much free shit, it ruled.
and then there's the Sharky's that i insist we also visit at least once a week...let's just say they very recently created a points card program, right? and it takes 100 bucks spent there to rack up 7 points. and i'm halfway on my way to my second time getting 7 points. oh yeah.

at the bar across from campus the 3 regular night time waitresses & bartender knew i'd have a pint of molson export without thinking twice...
then i got a bar job and all my coworkers got to perfect their long island ice tea abilities. my afterwork cocktail.
a pub down the street is where i usually go for lunch, they recognize me but i don't have a usual.
university life is a big bubble focussed around campus.
life's pretty sweet.
