This is like saying what's the difference between country/rock/soul/r&b. There are many differences between them.
What I don't understand is when you get into things called progressive retro dubstep and neo hardcore techno and shit.
what are they, then? give me examples if you have some, maybe i'm just not paying attention to the genres when i hear these things

Techno is old skool, 80's Afrika Baambaata style electronic music. Often fast paced and full of retrofuturistic sounds.
Trance concentrates on slow-building, synthesised horn sounds and is typically made up of very long, simple club tracks.
Dance music is pretty much any electronic music that becomes popular enough to be included on dance compilation CDs in cheap supermarkets.
House is usually hip-hop or rap-influenced, and generally includes lyrics, unlike most other electronic music. A lot of popular hip-hop could be classed as house.
That's my attempt to describe it all, anyway.
alright, thanks. what would something like this (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y7T49_LPt-8) be, then? the youtube description calls it house, but based on what you said, it seems more like trance to me (i wouldn't really say it has lyrics).
does "electronic" just refer to all these genres generally, then?

benni benassi is mainstream crap. electronic does refer to all the genres but these days there too many classify. instead of saying i like house or i like trance i just say i like this dj, or this artist. much easier than saying " i like deep funky underground progressive house" or what not. most good stuff shouldn't be able to be classified by one general genre

That song isn't trance because it doesn't have a slow build and isn't super long and boring.
You forgot to mention the best kind of electronic music, Drum N Bass.

afrika bambataa is electro if anything.....i never would have said he's "techno"
and i dont think you could classify much if any "popular hip-hop" as "house", they are very different.

Electro House is what it's all about, this is my specialist subject.

Here, a few music samples.
Padster has some really bad descriptions there. Yeah, Afrika Bambataa is techno....and hip hop is house?
Of course, there is Iskur's Guide (http://www.di.fm/edmguide/#) which is fun.
Here is an enjoyable Electro House mix on youtube

As for actually describing it, I can't but I know EH when I hear it.

in my mind a lot of the differences between the various electronic music genres is the pattern of the beats, and the sounds utilised to create the music. i dunno. i have it sorted in my mind, but find it difficult to explain, because it sounds so stupid.
and a lot of it, is just about where it started. so house is from chicago. techno is from detroit. and garage is from new york. obviously these are just the starting points, and it is all just disco really. dancing music.

I've oft wondered what is considered as house. For me a house is a building with four walls, roof and a floor.
Do those who dance house do it on a ceiling?

Yeah, it's really hard to put into words. There are differences between them all though and if you listen to them then you can hear it quite clearly.

techno is for when you are alone in the car
trance is for when you are sad and drank half a bottle of gin by yourself
dance is for rubbing your weiner on girls at the club
house is what your older brother chris took E to listen to in the early ninties
electronic is what makes the world go round

Look up a couple of posts, however many it is, and use Ishkur's Guide. That basically explains every little nuance and difference there is in all the sub-genres of electronic music.

okay so maybe that was a little closed minded but theres probably 10 DJs who make "techno" or whatever retarded genre/subgenre you want to apply thats actually worth listening to. For the most part its all repetitive bullshit that is only enjoyable if you've taken a considerable amount of ecstasy.

bob, you've been watching the wrong video! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=DdLmyMUjXAM) and i would class that as techno not trance.
i dunno what this says about my sexuality, but mostly i was worried about accidents while watching that. i mean they're not really wearing the appropriate equipment, they're not paying attention to what they're doing, i mean someone's bound to lose a finger

I don't pretend to truly know the difference half the time, but all I know is I like it whenever New Order or Depeche Mode does it. (y)
