I think there's a reference to kebabs in every single british movie, song, commercial, and book I've ever seen. good lord! that's a lot of kebabs!

also, what exactly is a kebab? in the U.S. it's meat and/or vegetables on a skewer. but I think kebabs in europe are like gyros here. meat in a pita and such.

doner kebab: gyros
shish kebab: meat on a stick

both are just called kebabs commonly

i think americans call them kabobs. maybe that's a different thing altogether.

If I get them at a middle eastern restaurant, they're kebabs. If my mom made them, they're shish kebabs (but we say it "shish kababs"). They were never laid on the grill -- they whirled around the rotisserie on top of the grill with some nice garlic bread sitting on the little shelf thing. Because mom packed veggies on with the meat, there were things that never cooked properly. A potato isn't going to get done at the same time as the steak. And other things would simply fall off the skewer into the coals. To this day, when I see the raw kebabs at the fancy grocery I shudder.

I always liked the hibichi better because I got to grill my own food on top the picnic table. (y)

Over here lots of lager = MUST EAT SHOARMA.
It's pretty much the same as a kebab, because it's meat in a pita bread with lots of stinky sauce.
Strange that beer gives you the urge to eat lots of nasty things. Hmm.

If you never want to suffer eating a doner kebab again, then just heed these words of advice - doner kebabs look like gammy vaginas.

Kebabs on sticks all the way (y)

Rafi, the owner of this gyros place by me, calls them "jie-rows," which kind of confuses me. Does he think he's Americanizing it to make it
easier for us?

I say "yeeros" and he corrects me.

Seeing as they're usually about £4 ($8) and invariably give you the shits the following morning, most people here only eat kebabs when they're incredibly drunk and the prospect of poor reconstituted meat drowned in watered down chilli sauce seems like an appealing prospect.

I really can't get enough of them when I'm drunk.

Too true. I have never eaten a donner kebab in my life and the smell of them makes me want to heave.

A friend of mine though can't get enough of them when she's drunk. Before we go out she's all "please don't let me have a kebab tonight. No matter how drunk i am. NO kebab"

Several hours and sherberts later she's shoveling one into her mouth like a woman possessed.

that happened to me it my local place too. there was a greek guy behind the counter, and i said "can i get a yeero", and he says "small pepperoni?" and i'm like "no, that's not quite it", and some other guy comes from the back and says "you mean jie-ro?" and i say "yeah that's the one".

it was kind of awkward

the one kebab i had in my life tasted awesome

worldwide we have the best meat controls, so i heard but kebabs have sometimes a worse meat quality than dog food

and paddy, you only get the shits the next morning if you had a kebab with chili sauce on it.
It's the best way! I have garlic sauce occasionally but I'm always scared it's got cum in it. :(

I'll indulge every couple of weeks.
My fave is a combination Chicken,Shish & Doner > all the salad, and shit loads of chilli sauce! If i'm taking it home, I'll buy a little pot of chilli sauce from their fridge, and cover the whole plate with it.

tips:
I need a towel nearby for a brow mop.
It's very hard to eat in front of someone, if they're not eating the same thing (very messy)!
A Box of baby wipes for the next day.
