Saw it in Xavvi (virgin megastores) the other day. Must be capitol raping whats left of Grandroyal. Comes in 12' version and cd. Contains nothing new, just a bunch of remixes. Anyone else seen it?

It's compilation that came out a month ago of a bunch of bootleg 12" that's been released over the last few years.

Nothing to do with Capitol.

It also says Capitol on all the bootleg 12" I have that make up that compilation. Just writing a word doesn't make it legit.

Here's a whole page of them:

Bit silly calling it Best of Grand Royal, when it has only beastie tracks on it.. maybe that was the best of Grand Royal.

The full name is "Best Of Grand Royal 12's"

The name refers to the 12's that you can read about in the link I so nicely provided.

I will now ask a dumb question.

Why are these 12" vinyls with record label imprints known as "bootlegs"? I always thought of bootlegs as illegally made recordings, such as tapes from shows. In fact, beastiemania seems to agree, defining a bootleg as "A record which was not created with the permission of the band or their record company. The majority of bootlegs are live recordings."

So if it's pressed in wax by a record label with a big machine, in this case Grand Royale, what makes it a bootleg?

I swear I'm cute so, be nice.

Because they are phony record label imprints...if you have a record pressing plant you can could probably change the pressing to read Capitol or Grand Royal.....or as you wrote Grand Royale.

The key phrase is "a record which was not created with the permission of the band or their record company."....yes, the majority are live recordings but in some cases it can be studio tracks pressed into a record and made to look legit.

OK, thanks. Simple enough -- they're fake. I guess I'd never really questioned the label on a vinyl record. (And yes, somewhere along the way the "royale with cheese" forever changed my spelling skills :)).

Right, well to bypass this argument I'd just like to say that I enjoyed this little compilation.

The So Watch Cha Want remix is good, never been a big fan of Cypress Hill really but this is a nice mash-up, very laid back and relaxed.

I had no idea that "Drum Machine" ever existed at all, let alone this remix. I have Rock Hard, Beastie Groove, She's On It etc., but I still have no idea where this song fits into the timeline.

Especially enjoyed the original version of Jimmy James, with the infamous Hendrix samples from Foxy Lady.

Other highlights for me: the Intergalactic remix, the trippy and uplifting remix of Alive, the jazzed up mix of Get It Together, and last but not least the live version of Groove Holmes with Biz Markie strolling on the mic ;)
