I know a lot of you are from big cities with hip hop acts that already have their name out there, but do any of you have any small town hip hop acts that you just love? one of our locals, Illbotz, are amazing. it's fun, goofy stuff and they just keep getting better and better with each CD they release (only locally available of course). of course they're huge Beastie Boys fans like me.

i LOVE the beat for "Unclean Jellybean", but they're saying "Doo Doo Def" is their single off the new CD. Stevie D is a pretty decent MC as well. OH and of COURSE DJ Samson rules. (yeah, they're my friends and they just happen to be awesome)

i'd like to check out your local underground favorites, especially if they have clever funny rhymes. post some links and reviews!

Seattle has some good ones:

The Saturday Knights
Blue Scholars
Common Market

Edit: Oops, I guess we're not exactly small town, but still sorta underground.

Ishmael Butler, aka Butterfly, formerly of Digable Planets, was living and recording in Seattle for a while. He released a CD called "Bright Black" under the group name Cherrywine several years ago that is amazing. It was on a small indie label, so it got no promotion and thus, no props. It's kind of a concept album focused on satirizing hip-hop materialism and infantilism, and the music is instrumental hip-hop - lots of guitars, keyboards and live drums. It is very, very good and one of the most slept on albums I know.

Here in Adelaide we have quite a few local hip hop acts that are hitting the big stage... They are all really good (I may be slightly biased though, they are all friends of mine and I have a vested interest in a couple of them ie producing stuff for them) such as Hilltop Hoods (first aussie hip hop act to have a platinum selling album)... They recently re-recorded their platinum album with the backing of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra... a landmark achievement, and one that won them an ARIA Award (aussie record industry award). This album scored 8/10 on rapreviews.com.

Also, the Funkoars, which have signed to the same indepedent label as the hoods (www.obeserecords.com) Their album The Greatest Hits scored a 7.5/10 on rapreviews.com and is my favourite aussie hip hop album to date. This is the band I'm producing the live dvd for. Their rhymes and beats are nothing short of FUCKING AWESOME.

Also Urthboy's latest album The Signal scored a whopping 9/10 on rapreviews.com, is sounding pretty damn good. I have yet to buy the album but what I have heard on the radio is awesome. www.myspace.com/urthboy

Last but not least a guy called Vents, just also signed to Obese, and his debut album Hard To Kill has just been released, being produced by Trials (Funkoars). www.myspace.com/ventz

My favourite songs on there are Love Song and Silence Means Death. Actually all 4 songs on his myspace player are really good.

Take 5 mins and have a listen and tell me what ya think!

this is good stuff! thanks!

and really, i don't care if it's a big city or not, just stuff that is considered local and not national acts.

to me the local scene is very DIY. they make their own beats, produce all their own shit, make their album artwork and burn their own CDs to sell. i love that kind of spirit! and all of that still comes out as some awesome music.
