It's MAGIC!
I rub it on my eyes and it somehow breaks down even the toughest mascara. Much better than expensive eye make up removers.

except for bacteria in your colon (y)
I have an aversion to Vaseline because I used to work with a woman who had a skin condition and she rubbed it all over her exposed skin and she was so shiny it freaked me out.

really? how come it stops my face getting chapped?
edit, post coffee: i guess its intention is to act as a barrier, so protecting the skin. i imagine it wouldn't be good to cover one's whole body in the stuff, unless one was swimming the channel... but covering just the lip/mouth area shouldn't be too problematic.

Indeedy! I also use a little to tame my unruly brooke shields-esque eyebrows.

you are on top of things, man (y)
i've been using it on my lips the past few days because twice this week i got minor bumps that cause me to shed a little blood. so i'm just trying to hide the raw skin from the elements for a few days

Vaseline is not so bad for your skin if it's not used all the time, but it isn't a 'moisturizer'. Basically what it does is prevent the skin from losing moisture (like you said, it forms a barrier). If you're skin is already dry, vaseline (or any other mineral oil) isn't going to do anything for you - you need a plant-based oil. Plant oils form in smaller molecules than mineral oils, basically, so a mineral oil will sit on the surface of the skin, but not absorb into it.
An experiment I do with pupils to illustrate this is to take a dab of olive oil and rub it onto a patch of skin on the back of your arm near the wrist. Do the same again with a bit of vaseline, except near the elbow. Then sit and watch TV for about 45 minutes, being careful not to rub your arm on anything. After 45 minutes, the olive oil patch will be 'gone' (absorbed), whereas the vaselined bit will still feel slick.
