you know those folks with dreadlocks and gungy clothes that hang out on the street with folders full of pictures of dying animals and deforestation trying to get you to give them money? i don't even know what they're called. they're usually with greenpeace or some other society.
they ALWAYS stop me. they spot me from across the street and then come running over, walk beside me, sometimes stand in front of me asking "do you care about animal habitats?" "have you seen an inconvenient truth?" "do you want to make a difference?"
I must be wearing a flashing sign "I AM A HIPPY" "I WOULD VERY MUCH DESPERATELY LIKE TO GIVE ALL MY MONEY AWAY TO SAVE THE WHALES"
maybe i need to start wearing a business suit and smoking cigars and looking like 'the man.'

don't flatter yourself, they do this to everybody. hippies hate me, and they do it to me too.

i remember when i was in college, i was attending an anti-war protest, and this sort of fat greasy guy was talking with a group of people about the PNAC and bush and whatever else, but i was a freshman and impressionable at the time, and i was actually impressed by that kind of talk, so i stood around and listened. and the motherfucker sort of glanced at me and started moving away, like he didn't want me to hear what he was saying. the greasy "pay attention to me" guy. a walking, talking, ericg.

and then another time, i was standing in line waiting to get into a dining hall, and this public interest group was trying to recruit everybody in the line. now i had actually wanted to join this group, so i was excited to have this convenient opportunity to sign up. so i'm watching as the guy works his way down the line, watching as everyone turns him down, and he gets to me, and he skips me! i have to say "hey! HEY! i wanna join you!" "what?" "i want to join!" "oh...uh here, take this, bye"

anyway they flag me down and won't let me leave too. they're fucking pushy. they're like "so how much are you going to donate today?" "what? no, i don't..." "huh? come on man, it's only like 50 cents a day, you can be a HERO for 50 cents a day, how are you gonna say no to that?" "really, i don't want to..." "for less than the cost of your morning coffee, you can" i just don't think charity should be a guilt trip, that's all

I don't know about where you guys are but here these people are usually getting paid about $17p/h to do this fundraising.

and their appearance fucks me off. I am usually in support of whatever cause they're fronting, but when they're dressed in ripped cargo pants, a moldy polar fleece and look like they haven't showered in weeks they immediately connect their disheveled hippy image with the organisation they represent. which sucks cause many of these organisations are the first and last contact the general public gets with the issues. so yeah, fuck hippies.

isn't chapstick made out of whale blubber?
they just put a scientific word on the chap---stick instead of "whale blubber"

i just wish they weren't so damn pushy. for filthy hippies they act an awful lot like salesmen, because they fucking won't let you leave without making the sale. a few weeks ago a bunch of jerks from children's international were trying to get donations. i was walking home from work, in my suit and tie (i worked at a suit and tie kind of place over the fall) and the guy's like

"hey man, i'm dan, what's your name?"

"uhh, i'm bob"

"great, great, well i'm working with children's international, you support feeding children, right, i mean it's hard to be a fan of starving children, you know?"

"...yeah"

"ok, well *pushes clipboard into my hand* if you can just fill out this, sign here, and check the box for the amount you want to donate each month for the rest of your life, we'll be all set"

"....i need to think about this?"

"aw, what's there to think about, man? children are STARVING out there man, look here, in zambia, for just 50 cents a day you can keep this kid alive, ok, so just sign here, and that's all you need to to be a hero man, let's make you a hero, ok?"

how are you supposed to say no to these people? as i was finally walking away from the guy, another person from the group was badgering this girl that was also trying to walk away. she didn't even stop, she just walked on like "no thanks", and the guy must have followed her for a good 30 yards, like "come on, just look here, look at the pamphlet, come one i know you have at least 2 minutes to look at this material, come on, let's make you a HERO!", it's just impossible to get away from them

i hate to be uncharitable, but jesus fuck, is that how charities are supposed to act?

$17p/hr?
that's not bad.
but yeh they look dirty and probably smell.
i avoid them at all costs.
my usual technique is to tailgate someone and then pass them on the outside lane, using the tailgated person to shield me from the street fundraiser person.
the outside of the public library here is often swarming with such people.

i either tell them i'm already a member or put on an accent and pretend i can barely speak english. that backfired on me once when one guy started talking back to me in russian. i was friggin shocked, so i said 'nyet spaciba' and ran the rest of the way to uni

that gives me an idea. next time i get ambushed by a children's international person, i should fake a russian accent and say "yes! child, i would like to buy child? how much for young female?" i'll either get arrested or they'll go away but either way it beats talking to them

lol, you best bob

i think i'm signed up to 3 different charities now. cant remember the name of the last one i signed up to, it happened when i was down in melbourne, but it was some hot english tourist who approached me with a nice rack who was wearing not much coz they cant stand the heat. she was ruthless, the fact that i didn't live 2000km's away didn't deter her. $20 a month for a 10 min perv seemed alright at the time, i'm kind of regretting it now, but in my defence it was a really good rack (y)

i really should cancel them, the most annoying thing is when they call you up, spend 15 mins about the friggin forests in brazil then ask you for more money. i fucking hate those calls

there is market in homeland

i once gave $40 to a breast cancer awareness run or something. he might have been a swindler as far as i know actually, but he seemed legit at the time. it was only a one-time thing though, at least i didn't sign up for a monthly committment, jesus, running into them on the street is bad enough, i'd hate for them to have my phone number

crud, some environmentalists piss me off. well, it depends on the approach they use to confront me. and like what bob said I agree guilt should not be used to donate to charity.

I'll only donate if they take the time to educate me on their plans not shove a bunch of burdens down my throat and out of my ass.

if they just let me walk away with a pamphlet or something, i'd be more likely to read it and say "well yeah, i would like to donate to this", but the way they just kind of shove the papers into your hand and refuse to let you think before you agree to give them $20/month, every month for the rest of your life, fuck that

I actually work for a company that does the charity marketing stuff, so I know a little bit about this.

Most charities look to marketing companies to get them subscriptions. Say, WWF want 100,000 new subscribers in a year. They'll pay a marketing company that specializes in charities a flat rate to get them the 100,000 new subscriptions, and the sales teams are paid on a comm/incentive basis. No flat rate (unless it's World Vision, they do pay a p/h rate which is why their campaigns run so long. In the end that's not good for the company taking care of their account or the charity as it becomes an "everywhere" cause).

Anyway. Most have a strict policy on appearance - business attire - and conduct (yes, icy, the girls are all quite hot, alot of them are backpackers and/or have a promotional modelling background) and all team members are fully informed about the work each charity they take care of does. We have 2-3 accounts on the go at any given time, as we are not allowed to get more subscriptions than specified in the contract (charities don't want to lose things like govt. grants, and this happens when the charities themselves earn too much money)

Basically, the marketing company gets a cut of the subscriptions for providing a service (20-30% of the campaign, I think) but it is always paid as a flat fee prior to the commencement of the campaign. The members of the sales teams then get a cut of that money, depending on how many pieces they do in a week.

I used to be annoyed by these people but now I work in the office of one, and it's opened up my eyes heaps. It's the best working environment - the sales teams are full of people with loads of personality, upbeat, fun people. They're passionate about what they do, and who they represent, I love it.

In short, maybe the marketing companies you encounter aren't as stringent as the one I work for. Oh, and I don't do the sales side - never have (never will).

yeah, a pamphlet would be better. I just don't wanna get cheated on me money and finding out I have been con. oh man, same thing goes with the navy calling me almost week by week after refusing to sign up deal. I'm studying in college can't they take a hint? no means no, leave. I take on environmentalists over the navy any day.
