Through a whole bunch of government and private sector rebates and programs; we're getting a grid-feed solar power system put on at home for the princely, and very cheap, sum of $500. Basically, the panels will feed the house during the day and the grid will do the work of a night, with the option to upgrade to batteries and extra panels in the future so that we will be completely solar powered.
Its so cheap ($500 for $14,000 bucks worth of gear) because of the governments renewable energy rebate of $8000, plus the company offering the deal putting in $5500 through their Solar Neighbourhood scheme (50 houses from the same community have to sign on before it goes ahead, which has happened already in my community).
