A kid in my class told me at the beginning of the school year that there was a positive review of TMU in Transworld Skateboarding. I couldn't find it anywhere and he couldn't find his copy until this morning. The only pic accompanying it was the album cover. Here it is:

As hip-hop innovators and punk-funk acolytes, the Beastie Boys have had a long and fruitful career. Despite never having enjoyed the group's rapping style, even I have considerable respect for the way they've done what they do. They make exactly what they want, with whom they want, and whenever they feel like it. Back in the day, they came across as cheesedicks clamoring to ride the emerging hip-hop wave -- just like many others. They wrote corny raps full of whiny rhymes about girls and getting wasted. But eventually, even they knew that was getting old.
Somewhere along the line they grew up, got deeply creative, and found new purpose. Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head are incredibly well-informed, timeless works of art. The new all-instrumental album The Mix-Up is a brilliant move. It flows well as is and should they enlist a few guest MCs (Ghostface!) to join them in the coming months, these tracks will make the perfect background jams for a lifetime of listening pleasure. -- Arlie Carstens
