Shit!

I really don't listen to enough new music. I should hang my head in shame. Maybe I should get with this whole downloading thing at last (or just get my cashflow in order)?

I loved the Mix Up and the Bad Brains' 'Build a Nation' was sweet.

I quite liked Icky Thump, Neon Bible, and that Black Kids EP is getting played quite a lot this last few weeks. Umm, I can't seem to recall any really mindblowing albums this year (TMU was real nice but not overly radical) - probably just my memory being shit! I haven't heard that Radiohead thing yet and have only heard a little bit of MIA's LP. I'm looking forward to the Portishead album that's apparently dropping next year - although I don't anticipate any great shocks from it.

I could do with a few really solid Hip Hop albums to freshen me up - I know there's stuff out there but I find I mainly just play loads of different singles.

I'm listening to Prefuse 73's recent 'Preparations' LP quite a bit I guess.

Kala - MIA
Version - Mark Ronson
Graduation - Kanye
I'll Sleep When you're Dead - El-P
Weekend In The City - Bloc Party
American Gangster - Jay Z
8 Diagrams - Wu
and he just pointed to the sky - Peder (prunes)
The Return of the Magnificent - Jazzy Jeff

Gareth, I fucking love Umbrella too. I'm gonna slide a piece about it being a euphemism for face-sitting into my anecdotes. Biggest missed opportunity has to go to The Mix Up; could have been the singing-and-playing Check Your Head.

I remember enjoying these enormously:
BRMC - Baby 81
Beastie Boys - The Mix-up
Timo Räisänen - Love will turn you around
QOTSA - Era vulgaris
José Gonzales - In our nature
Grinderman - Grinderman
Edwyn Collins - Home again

I've listened to waaaaay to little to Icky Thumb, In Rainbows and Cucaracha to give honest opinion... :o and they're all done by some of my favourite bands... or Foo Fighters' latest for that matter... These are just some that I can remember off hand, haven't gone through my collection nor this year's releases yet.

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
Radiohead - In Rainbows

I bought (with one exception, which should be obvious) and liked these

Tegan and Sara - The Con
Kanye West - Graduation
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Beastie Boys - The Mix Up
Against Me! - New Wave
Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare
The Nightwatchman - One Man Revolution
Bad Brains - Build a Nation

The only other 2007 release I can think of that I bought (I don't really download albums) is The Good, The Bad, and The Queen. It's alright, but I basically bought it because I love The Clash and Paul Simonon plays on it. It's not a bad album, but I never listen to it. I will surely catch up with the greats of 2007 over the next couple years when a bunch of them are cheaper. I currently have a copy of Thurston Moore's "The Trees Outside the Academy" coming to me and I still need to get Feist's "The Reminder."

That's a good one. I can't believe they found such a quality recording.

I tried a lot of new stuff that I didn't like, and I bought a lot of CDs by female artists that I never felt like listening to (Feist, Linda Thompson, Bjork, Lucinda Williams, Amiina). The Arcade Fire CD was okay. I never listened to the NIN one. I didn't care for the Beasties' instrumental one at all. I even tried Justice but it's not my bag.

This was my year for pleasant sounding music that's not remotely challenging I guess:

Wilco
Travis
Radiohead
Apples in Stereo
Sigur Ros (this will probably be my most-played CD of 2007 because I can write papers while I'm listening to it over and over)

I've really enjoyed the last 3 or so Lucinda Williams albums. Initially, I may have just bought into the hype a little, but she's actually a very consistent artist.

I don't think I've really liked any Travis albums since The Man Who, though. And once I gave it a proper listen, the Arcade Fire album really started to grow on me. Took a little time, I guess, which usually doesn't work for me.

But I agree with you on the NIN/Beastie/Justice albums. Couldn't get into them. I tried. My attention span is really short these days. I need instant satisfaction. Which is probably why my favorite single of the year is still Umbrella....ella....ella...

I much preferred "Sky Blue Sky" to "A Ghost is Born." I initially really hated "A Ghost is Born," but as I listened to it later on, I realized there was great stuff on it, but I think those 12-minute songs is something I could have done without. So I've accepted it in their discography, but I expected better from Wilco.

Now with "Sky Blue Sky," I thought this was Wilco triumphing once again (even if critics were kinda wishy-washy about the album). It reminded me more of early Wilco and that's a good thing too.

I don't think I've really liked any Travis albums since The Man Who, though. And once I gave it a proper listen, the Arcade Fire album really started to grow on me. Took a little time, I guess, which usually doesn't work for me.
I'm heavily influenced by the live experience. My friend dragged me to a Travis concert and it was one of the most fun concerts I went to all year. They were hilarious and got me going despite my bad attitude. So now when I hear things off that new CD I remember them performing the songs live and I smile. That dumb song about his son "My Eyes" -- I would have hated that if I hadn't heard his story about writing it for his newborn.

I feel bad about Lucinda Williams. I was so excited to see her and we had great seats, and then I had a rotten time at her concert and left early and never felt like playing the CD after that. It wasn't her fault. I was having problems at work and couldn't concentrate so I left rather than sitting there and thinking about my job.

Despite the fact that I saw Beasties four times this year, that new CD never grew on me. In fact, by the second "gala" show I was so hostile to the new music that I actually had a bad time. Thank goodness my last show with them was a regular hip hop show, and a great one at that.

As for Wilco: I just love them live, and I'm so crazy about the new guitar player. He doesn't even fit their style and that's a negative on the new CD, but he's so great live!!! The new CD grew on me. It's never going to be a CD that I remember as an all time great, but I will keep putting it on when I'm reading and just want some nice music. I happened to be listening to YHF tonight on the way home. I understand why people say it's overrated and not as fun as the earlier stuff, but I really do enjoy that CD. It's funny because I was thinking that in the car tonight and I was feeling kind of mad that people call it overrated. On the other hand, it bugs the shit out of me at some Wilco shows when the people around me only know stuff off that CD. Alas. I'm hard to please.

Lucinda Williams IS quite good live. The venue she played in here had extremely good acoustics (which she was quite aware of and that heightened her performance), so try again, if you can.

Travis is kind of a band I've grown out of. I do still love "The Man Who", but I can't be bothered with what they're doing lately. *shrug*

Wilco: I kind of feel bad for not seeing them live again when they came this August (their '06 show here was VERY awesome though). And I think "A Ghost is Born" sounds better live than in the studio. Hearing their songs live (both from the live album and the live show I attended) is what helped redeem the album in my eyes and re-appraise it.

I love all the artists like Lucinda Williams who play the nice old theaters. I see so many people I'm not that interested in, just because they're playing a good venue. Sadly, one of the good venues dramatically raised its prices last year. I'll pay $30-40 to see just about anyone, but $80-100 is a whole other story.

Now that you say it, DS, I'm sure that I got into Sky Blue Sky solely because of the shows Wilco did here. I wish I lived in Chicago and could take advantage of that thing they're doing this spring at the Riviera. It would be fantastic to catch a few nights of that. It's funny that I like them so much, because I usually have a negative emotional reaction when a band casts off almost all of its original members and keeps the same name.

I really only liked the latter three though. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Ultimate Victory since I didn't know what I was getting into with Cham with not listening to his first album. Some weak songs did drag down the album pretty bad though.

Alright, got The Trees Outside the Academy and The Reminder, as well as Rilo Kiley's "Under the Blacklight" and Bedouin Soundclash's "Street Gospels." All of those are really good except for Bedouin Soundclash, which is good but nothing to get excited about.

I've tried to listen to the Arcade Fire one a few more times and I still don't like it.

I listened to Feist's some more and it's bland but likeable. Good music for reading at the coffee shop but it's not going to have a bigger impact than that.
