The Beatles when I was about 7, I listened to my father's records.

The first favourite band I had that I discovered by myself was The Pixies in 1991 when I was 14.

My first favorite band was ELO, when I was about 11. I remember Discovery being the first album I knew was coming down the
line and being excited to buy it the day it was released. I would've been about 12 going on 13.

But before that, my favorite artist was Barry Manilow, when I was about nine or ten. Yup.

MC Moot
12-12-2007, 11:07 AM
Oh ELO!....yes,I think the first 8 tracks I got from Mom were ELO,Three Dog Night,John Denver and the Star Wars soundtrack….(y)

The Star Wars soundtrack was the first record I ever bought with my own money.

I thought "soundtrack" meant it would have all the dialogue and sound effects and stuff -- basically, the movie on LP.

Oops.

PRICELESS!!!....I thought the EXACT same fuck'n thing...(y):D(y)...the first record I bought was a .45 of Monster Mash and the flipside it was the One Eyed Purple People Eater....I played the Mash repeatedly for hours on end,day after day....and then one day I found it sitting on the heat register all warped to shit....SABOTAGE!!!

I think my first 45 was "The Candy Man" by Sammy Davis Jr.

I also remember having "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)," "The Night Chicago Died," and "One Bad Apple."

If you buy the 2-disc version of the Apocalypse Now soundtrack, then you get almost that.

...they later came out with The Story of Star Wars, which was a one-LP abridgment of the movie. That was closer to what I was
expecting, though really short.

Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Around 1984, i was about 10 or 11, singing along to 'Relax' in my bedroom - not quite understanding what the lyrics were about.

I like them for many years though...until they split up anyway.

Would that "Simpsons Sing The Blues" album back in 1990 or so count? Because I honestly loved that shit at the time.

I guess first proper proper favorite band was The Beatles because of the "Beatles Anthology" special that was on ABC in '95 and then got mega-obsessed.

oh god, how can you tell that we are the same age

I was just going to post the exact same thing like WORD for word.

my first tape was the simpsons sing the blues.
I even did an air band to one of the songs in elementary school. shit I cant remember which song though...

my first cd though was jimi's "are you experienced" but that was right around the time I first got OBSESSED with the beatles because of that tv special.

When I was a kid I mainly just liked the songs, not the artists per se. Stuff like Cotton fields, Tie a yellow ribbon, Born to be wild, Easy livin'... Once there was a survey at my school (by some older kids there) what was the most popular song in our school and my classmate thought my answer was so embarrassing she took me to the library to listen to Aladdin Sane that had just come out... rest is history.

I bought that. Me and my mates played it once while on acid. We were having an Australia Day party the next day so we'd set up the stereo so that there were speakers in all parts of the house - in the bedrooms, the hallway, kitchen etc. I mean, lines like 'I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor.', 'I've seen horrors... horrors that you've seen. But you have no right to call me a murderer. You have a right to kill me. You have a right to do that... but you have no right to judge me' and 'You either surf or you fight' on strong acid??

Anyway, Bon Jovi was the first band I was obsessed with. Slippery When Wet came out when I was 12 and I thought is was awesome.

When I was growing up my Mum would play a lot of Beatles, Fleetwood Mac and Simon & Garfunkel in the car and stuff.

My older brother would play Dire Straits (!) when he was young, then later on stuff like Pink Floyd, Cream, and lots of indie type suff (The La's, James type indie).

My older sister was into the Pixies and Manchester sort of indie like the Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets type stuff and she also used to like De La Soul. I remember her playing me a Jungle Brothers album and thinking I could get into that - it seemed colourful and exotic.

So I thought I'd try and find out more about this rap stuff to impress the girls (I was about 10 or 11) - I felt like a late starter to music as my best friend had Guns and Roses posters all over his bedroom walls (I didn't like the look of them at the time).

The first 45 I bought was a Beats International thing - I was trying to buy 'Dub be good to me' but this was the single after that.

The next 45 I bought was Welcome to the terrordome. The sound and image were so alien and shocking and I was off.

Publi Enemy were my first favourite band.

Daddy used to listen to Hank Williams Jr. when i was a kid. i still get all misty when i hear
"Country Boy Can Survive".

my first 45 was "Hip to be Square" by Huey Lewis and the News. that's one that did not stick.
i hate that effing song.

first record i remember myself and my brother learning every line of every song and
singing all day long... Run DMC - Raising Hell.

the other day i told my momma i was listening to Run DMC and she said
"oh you and your brother wished you were those guys when you were little!"
then she told me the story of how we kept singing "proud to be black" and
my daddy getting irritated at us b/c we were two white country kids.
