Ive noticed this trend and I cant quite make sense of it. It seems like some of the tastiest restaurants are on blocks that are fucking shady as hell.

For example, theres this fish restaurant on a block here thats the kind of area where old ladies get robbed on their way to church (which actually happened last week) and people have been gunned down in broad daylight. Not like its a constant trend and you have to wear a kevlar vest when passing thru, but nontheless a pretty fucking rough area. Now, logic states "yeah I should probably not spend much time there" but god damn if the food wasnt so delicious it would be an easy choice.

Supposedly there are a lot of great joints in east San José, but I never go there anymore. Not just because that's where a lot of crime is,
but just... I have no business to do over there.

1. poor people cook good food.

2. restaurants have the hugest failure rate ever. so it makes sense to open one up in the lowest rent area possible just so you dont lose both your shirt AND your pants when there is an 80% chance you will go under. so with these statistics chances that you will find a banging place to eat in a shady area is pretty good.

oh god. vancouver is a restaurant haven. its been way too long since i took a trip downt here.

Good food is often found in authentic ethnic restaurants. Ethnic restaurants are often found in sketchy neighborhoods because the rent is cheap.

Many bad restaurants are really just overpriced. They're overpriced because they're in beautiful locations. They're putting their money into the rent instead of into the fresh fish.

Eat Street off Nicollet is kinda sorta shady, as is the vicinity around the Midtown Global Market.

The fish place is off the intersection of Penn Ave North and West Broadway. Aside from that restaurant, there isnt a whole lot of other places to eat around.

West Broadway used to be my old bus route for years, but I can't remember the last time I drove down there so I can't visualize the restaurant at all. I've actually wondered how the neighborhood was doing. During the Reagan years, there were boarded up homes all over. Then it got better for a while.

Make sure to take a look in the DAV while you're over there. ;)

I had a fantastic seafood salad at that Global Market place -- much to my surprise. I don't like the barn-like atmosphere, but it was good food.

The intersection would be where Broadway starts to meander from the straightaway and goes up a slight hill. Theres a huge liquor store on the corner nearby and a furniture store on the opposite side of the street.

Overall, West Broadway is a pretty depressing block. Lowry looks better than it used to.

DAV?

Disabled American Veterans used to have a store over there. I have no idea if it's still there. It's not my kind of thing, but my brother (who used to live over there) and my friend (who used to work on that part of West Broad) both used to frequent it. Apparently you used to be able to get some valuable stuff instead of the usual used crap you see at thrift stores. My friend bought some cool old toys that she sold for a large profit.
