View Full Version : Writing thank you notes...

Basically sucks. You know when you go into an interview you're supposed to write every single person that met with you a thank you note?

So now I've got three thank you notes to write. Two are out of the way but I'm stumping on the third. The last person I met with was HR and all she really did was walk me upstairs, place me in a conference room, and asked me to complete this short logic/math test and then complete a writing sample.

What should I do, thank her for giving me a test and making me write? That seems kinda stupid, if you ask me.

I'd just use the generics. You know, "thank you for considering me" and "taking time out of your schedule" stuff.

What kind of job?

Media planning at an advertising agency.

I've already accepted one job somewhere else for more money... but this place has better stability in the long run, I think. Plus the office environment is really more "me." So, if they offer me a position I'm definitely taking it.

Anyway, yeah. I thought about just doing the generic stuff but that seems like it'll just be super short and lame. Oh well. Here goes nothing.

That's news to me. I have never done this. Must be an American thing eh? Us Brits are so impolite at times :D

Media Planning? How technical is that?

Do you do hands on work with media, or is it more like coordinating art teams and post house?

I've never heard about this either.

Not super technical. Basically it involves deciding correct venues for ads based on target demographic, deciding when exactly those ads should be placed/run, and deciding how much of the budget gets dedicated to each medium. Plus a few other duties... but that's the bulk of it.

Yeah, it's an absolute necessity in the world of formal interviewing here in America. It's considered bad form to not send a thank you letter after interviewing.

Scary, the only people I've ever sent thank you letters to were the people that actually did the interviewing. I've never sent more than one letter to any single office after an interview. Maybe I'm off base but I've always felt that the only people that need to be thanked after an interview were the people that actually sat down with me and spent an hour or so of their day to find out what I was all about.

So the receptionist gave you an application and a secretary told you where to sit. Big deal. You are worrying about too much shit at one time.

Seriously? I've never heard of this either, and it certainly hasn't stopped me from getting jobs. And on top of that, I work in the HR department for a local non-profit organisation. I'm currently auditing employee files, where every piece of correspondence is placed, and I have not come across a single thank you note in any of them.

I thought everybody that worked white collar was familiar with this policy. I dunno. Things change all the time. Maybe this is one of them. I haven't written a thank you note in years but I remember it being standard procedure as early as ten years ago. Maybe it's not en vogue anymore.
