I never really considered heath ledger to be a pretty boy teen magnet...he's sort of unusual looking.

anyway, I am super pumped about this movie. christian bale is an excellent batman. and I've like heath in pretty much everything I've seen him in.

It really bothers me that Burton and so many others have missed the underlying reason for Joker.

He is Batman's mirror image. He's just a man, no super powers, no cosmic radiation, just a man driven by his psyche and his demons. They're both sociopaths, except the Joker would love to laugh through the apocolypse, and Batman is trying to prevent one. Both very much in tune with Sisyphus, their actions very much like trying to roll a boulder up a hill.

Nolan seems to get it, his Batman isn't terribly lucky or skilled, but cunning and savy. I see the same in his Joker so far, he's not a charicature, he's a fucking psychopath who revels in mayhem, and also happens to be cunning and savy.
