I wouldn't be surprised if they've had some hip-hop stuff in the pipeline for a while now. TMU's tracks were likely done and they decided to release them as an instrumental album while they bang out the other music rather than make us wait 5 years to hear new material.

Personally I don't care anymore. If they release another so-so album, it'll be a shame, but their live shows will probably improve exponentially anyways. I would hope there are no 'snippets' on the site, and no o-scope footage; a fresh and shocking experience would be sweet for a change. If it is hip-hop, hopefully it's not formulaic, and they try to challenge themselves. Get out of that studio, it's killing the music. Go on an adventure again. Fuck it, go to Europe and work with The Prunes. Nah, just try to make a debut album, and not something that coasts on the reputation of previous achievements.

I really shouldn't be so down on To The 5 Boroughs, and I'm not. Really. After all, it was all the hype surrounding To The 5 Boroughs's release that led to me becoming a Beastie fanboy which still lasts to this very day. Plus, that album came out during the summer of 2004 a.k.a. one of the best summers of my entire life (Hello Nasty came out in the summer of 1998, also one of the best summers of my entire life, so...), and I do associate that album with that particular summer, and year really. It was the third Beastie Boys album I ever listened to too (the first being Paul's Boutique of course, and then Check Your Head).
At the time I loved it, but now...I don't know. Maybe it's because I've listened to so many Beastie songs whether they be other album tracks, live performances, B-Sides, remixes, unreleased stuff, and loved them and listened to them so many times. Maybe it's the simplistic computer beats that seemed like a step down from the musical collages of past albums. Maybe it's Adrock and MCA sounding older and raspier than they did on Hello Nasty. Maybe it's the doo doo rhymes sounding like...well, doo doo. I don't know what it is. But I do know that I can't claim to love To The 5 Boroughs and mean it like I do with their other albums.
I still really like "Ch-Check It Out" though. That shit's my jam! And as sappy as it may be, I do love "An Open Letter To NYC". I think it's a beautiful song and it makes me feel homesick for New York City almost everytime I listen to it. In fact, that's the one song that I've repeatedly listened to from To The 5 Boroughs.

I love TT5B but have a feeling I wouldn't be so crazy about if I wasn't living in NYC.
I remember someone (not a NYer) posting on here after the Central Park show that the BBs didn't sound too good performing Open Letter. It was a highlight for me. Being in the park surrounded by NYers while Adrock shout's Since 911 we're still livin' and lovin' life we've been given... everyone started screaming and waving their fist like a big F'you to the terrorist. Very cool. This album makes me feel like I have a bond with them (and I don't care if it's only in my head). Then again, PB did that, too.
What I'm talking about?:o

they should turn back time and scratch off half of the songs on tt5b and release it as an EP instead cause then i would like it more
im sure the beasties or atleast mike would do me that favor..
alikat
01-02-2008, 06:18 PM
all this talk about tt5b had me put the album on, something i haven't done in a while.
music is so subjective. liking songs, especially anthems like open letter, is all about conext, nostalgia, time, place, etc. the year this album dropped i was so in love with it. when an old friend comes around after six years it's hard to judge. i had just moved away from my hometown nyc and like craved this album. it came wrapped in my destroyed skyline and packed with fun, goofy lines, old school samples, a dose of politics and classic beastie boys antics. it was practically a concept album, the concept being "we are the beastie boys and we are from new york city and we love hip hop and mixing beats." as mike d said somewhere, "i'd file it under goofy." what was to hate?
in retrospect, no, it's not my go-to. i turn to other artists for this kind of hip hop album. it lacks the complex textures and staying power of pb, ic and cyh (which i played throughout college and just last night to help get me through a drive in a snow storm).
but tt5b has its place, even now as i re-visit. you know what this album reminds me of now? an INSANE year of live performances from this band. i mean how off the hook was the pageant tour? the letterman appearance? aifst? (and how often do i hear yauch's provolone rhyme in my head when contemplating a cheese plate?)
anyway: next album hip hop? wtf do i know. :o

I've said it in the past, and I'll say it again. To me, To The 5 Boroughs's lasting legacy is that, just like Licensed To Ill and Check Your Head before it, it introduced the Beastie Boys to a whole new generation of fans. The kids of the '00s now had a Beastie Boys album to call their own, just like the kids of the '80s and '90s did. Myself, I had always liked their singles, but To The 5 Boroughs is what led to me actually buying their albums...and learning what their names are. For years the Beastie Boys were "high pitched voice guy, Mike D, and that guy with the gray hair." Then "Ch-Check It Out" came out and I was like, "I never noticed he says Adrock alot in his songs! That's his MC name!" I don't know why it took me that long to figure it out, and I also don't know why I thought MCA's name was RCA for a little while back in '04.
But there were plenty of 16-17 year olds that played "Ch-Check It Out" back in 2004, like my friend for instance. And those kids could/did delve deeper into their catalogue and may/do have all of their albums now. So if To The 5 Boroughs got them more fans, then the album can't be all that bad.

Interesting point, well there you go. The New Generation Album. It's like Pop for U2 or Green for R.E.M. :o (y)
If the analogy holds, their War / Reckoning days may be over but we can expect an All That You Can't Leave Behind / Automatic For The People in the not-too-too-distant future.

A playing/rapping album would be pretty cool. Like songs that are designed from the ground up to be played and rapped live, like Live at PJ's or The Maestro. I think their trading off of vocals combined with playing instruments simultaneously would be pretty cool. I'm thinking almost punk-rap or something here.
As if a fan's hopes ever come true, but it would be cool.

I agree, the 'Hip-Hop as a full-band' thing would be great. Throw in some instrumentals/hardcore etc. Whatever. It's a horrible thing to say (and I mean it with due respect to MMM), but that first Sasquatch boot showed exactly what they could do without the conventional trappings of hip-hop.

No! It doesn't at all. You are a hundred percent right both times. Look, the boys are damm good at what they do! This is the kind of arguments people have hear that make me go away for a while. The Pagent tour WAS the hot fire being brought- it was the boys on top of their(hip-hop) game. This last tour was the showcasing of the boys crazy versatility musically. The bigger point should not be which of the boys crazy musical game is better, but that they have so much of it they are not to missed, because no matter their current style(s) its gonna be hype. I meant this to be more concise/funny but my roommates girlfriend just had an incredibly loud orgasm. Shit's distractin'...

Loud orgasms or not I think you're right - I think the Beasties know that they have a large following that hopefully understand and appreciate their diversification, but that they also enjoy doing new things and keeping an eye on current musical trends to appeal to new fans and to retain their own interest in the music making process.
I find I have to take their last 3 albums on their individual merit - I was a huge fan of CYH and IC and was a bit thrown at first by intergalactic's electronic sound - once I'd bought and absorbed HN I thought it was amazing - probably their most 'pop' album but consistently interesting, tasteful and, well, 'beastie'.
Again, Check it out came out and at first it seemed a bit simple but it had a quirkiness about it and it grew on me quickly - I kind of wished that TT5B had more material like that (i.e. sample-based) but found it was a really fun, energetic album when I gave it the space to do it's thing - it may not be the album I listen to most but it sure gets me dancing about my flat when I do, and the Beasties seemed keen, youthful and fun again. The computerish beats sounded like they'd been made to rock stadiums with and reminded me of Stetsasonic or the Awesome Foursome or something. Also, this was the period when I started discovering all the fan remixes which helped me to appreciate what they were trying to do with Hip Hop and also the B-Sides - 'And then I' is strong as fuck and is a really interesting and unusual track. 'This government needs a tune up' was stronger than the politicized tracks on the album and 'Brrrrrrr stick 'em' is just typical Beastie silliness - basically all the 'extra' type stuff including AIFST helped me to appreciate the Beastie Boys bigger picture.
Before it came out Mike said that TMU might piss a few people off - it was a pretty bold move from a band in their position but I think they just wanted to make some oddball funky dub stuff regardless of who gave a shit. If the tracks on TMU were on a bunch of dusty old 45s by bands called stuff like 'Felix Duke and the Prettybones' I'd be loving them breaks! - why should it be any different just because they all came together on an album by my favourite band?
I love their punk/hardcore stuff (especially live) and I think that they could probably take Hip Hop wherever they wanted at this stage. I'm just glad that they continue to do that shit that they do. I think the field is wide open - they've got Mark, Mike and Fredo on board if they want them - the possibilities are endless.:)
