I'm sure at least some of you read comic books/graphic novels. I thought I would make a new thread where we could discuss them. DC or Marvel, don't care, let's have an interesting discussion about storylines, characters, etc.

Anyone read the Civil War saga? I found it was very good but there didn't seem to be a clear enough line that divided the two factions. Yes, one wanted registration and one wanted freedom to remain masked, but both sides emphasized American principles etc. and Captain America's speeches (at least the big one to Spiderman) didn't tie in well with his cause.

Your thoughts.

But yeah, I keep up with The Punisher, Walking Dead, and The Boys.

I finally got around to reading some of The Invisibles old graphic novels (really weird/great matrix-only-with-magic-psychics sort of stuff.

I've always been a fan of Green Lantern, and I actually bought the new series where Sinestro starts a Yellow Lantern Corps. That was pretty cool. They just finished that series last week.

I just read Japanese graphic novels, more commonly known as manga. I recommend reading Berserk, Great Teacher Onizuka, and Flame of Recca. Also got some Bleach books, since I've heard good things in the manga.

I like when stories have seperate arcs where the characters must confront a new problem each time, but each one should have a substantial difference from one another. For instance, in Flame of Recca, the protagonists must partake in a tournament with the villians, and it's exciting to read.

Other than that, I never got into the American graphic novels. Never interested me much.

I'm currently reading League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier by Alan Moore. Of course, it is ten shades of awesome.
I also started reading The Exterminators from Vertigo. Quite a gross book with mutated cockroaches and bug infestations.
I also managed to snag some nice stuff from ebay auctions, Kirby Thor and Steranko Tales to astonish...

Berserk

Berserk is epic on many levels. If you're squeamish about gore then it's more than worth getting over it. The main character, Gatsu, is confronted by what has been deemed an inescable fate at every turn in the book. Yet he somehow manages to fight against it. Btw, Chapter 29 is out.

I'm also pretty much into Death Note like everyone else is these days. I suggest the books over the anime. I like BLAME! but mostly for the art. The Matrix kind of ripped it off to an extent but there was no concrete story behind it anyway. There's supposedly a CGI movie being developed too. Monster (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monster_(manga)) has been a book I haven't gotten myself to purchase but of the 5 volumes I've read, they're really tempting me to stop bein a cheap ass.

Oh yeah, FABLES (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fables_%28Vertigo%29) is probably one of my favorite American graphic novels at the moment. It's about classic characters from well, fables, living in modern times. The story goes a lot deeper than that. Highly recommended.

Guess I'm not too into the superhero stuff these days.

I haven't picked up a book in ages but I read alot of Marvel stuff. I'm a big fan of artists chris bachalo and Jim lee, and I've talked to them in person a couple of times. I grew up on the X-men animated tv show, and that needs to get on dvd immediatly. So I like the X-men and the fantastic four, secret wars I and II and all that old school stuff.

I known its fucking hard to tell, but since its a foreign G.N. and its been published here probably in other nations it becomes widely known and widely praised so in that concept lol thats why its known as the best graphic novel in history. Well, in opinion, certainly the best from Japan.

Audio I was merely stating that to make such a claim seems extremely subjective. A lot of critics say Watchmen is the greatest graphic novel in history, but that's an equally silly statement. Both of the works deserve to be considered two the best given how amazing they are.

my list is almost the same. I'd take out Bendis, though I love ultimate spiderman, and stan lee, because he created great characters, not great stories. I'd put in Peter Laird at #4 and Kevin Eastman at #5. I love Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Laird does all the amazing new stories. I don't like much of what Eastman's done since, so he goes at #5.

I completely forgot about TMNT comics. I would give them an honorable mention because I don't want to flip flop on my top five. Funny because a year ago, Miller and Moore weren't on my list. It's only been in the last year or so I've expanded beyond just Marvel. What a fool I was.

Also, whoever is writing/wrote the last year of Batman is alright in my books. Batman R.I.P. kind of scared me before but thus far it's been nothing short of spectacular.(y)

EDIT: Bendis' Secret Invasion story blows, so he's not off the hook from criticism. He's also a cocky asshole, or so I hear.

I havent got a chance to get into Batman R.I.P. yet. Hopefully, I'll pick the books up soon before they reach crazy prices.

TMNT has been my favorite since I was a kid. I loved the cartoon, and I got some of the original books from my neighbor. I was shocked at how different they were, and I've been obsessed with that story ever since. I think my oldest turtles book is #2 2nd print. I've got a nearly complete collection. I'm a nerd.

I was going to ask if you liked Secret Invasion so far. Honestly, I hate it. What I like much better is the current "Old Man Logan" story in Wolverine. (y)

Well, you won't really have to pick them up anymore.(y)

as far as Secret Invasion goes I like what Ms. Marvel is doing right now, but that might be because she's a hottie. The annual that just came out with her and Spider-Man is excellent!

Otherwise, all of the major comics are a clusterfuck of ideas. I want it to go away. Civil War was so good, why are we being fed such mediocre crap?(n)

Right now in Amazing Spider-Man the whole 'Anti-Venom' story completely makes up for the limp dick writing since Brand New Day began. Bringing back Norman Osbourne has been a treat. However, having his ass kicked by that one-dimensional ripoff Menace was stupid.

Oh, I'll still have to pick them up. I like to have a physical copy, and besides, I hate money.

I read about the Anti-Venom story in Wizard, and it really seems lame to me. I haven't read Amazing Spider-Man since Brand New Day started, because I cant stand it. I never really understood reboots unless a writer takes a story in a new and terrible direction. Example: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vol 3, when Image Comics took over and made it like Savage Dragon. The newer TMNT stories just wiped that from existance.

Sorry to harp on TMNT, but it was the best example I could think of :o

TMNT is a good way of explaining it. Brand New Day was such a bad decision IMO. Sales are up though, so some idiots somewhere must be digging it. Anti-Venom is a good way of making someone lawfully good and reformed like Eddie Brock still a bad guy. He only wants to help, but his actions are 'bad', at least for Spider-Man.

I've been reading Deadpool for about a month now, I'm on #65 of #69

I just ordered Wolverine: Origins #21 - 25 mainly because of Deadpool. I haven't gotten it yet but if it's good I might try to pick up some of the tbp's of the earlier Wolvie origins and get into that one. I got those mainly because if my understanding is correct, they're sort of a precursor to the new 'pool series that's out. Issue #1 looked promising. #2 is out tomorrow and I plan to pick that up.

I also got #1 of Magneto Testement, which I'm interested to see how that works out.

I was sad to be almost out of Deadpool, but I just got a torrent of all of DP & Cable so I'll have that to last me awhile too.

I have full intentions of getting Watchmen in the next few days.

I never looked at a comic/graphic novel till about a month ago and I got sucked in pretty hard. I've got a long list forming of things I want.

i got out of buying comic books 'cause i just can't afford them and i haven't kept uo with who's writing what now either but i was totally nerdy for anything Neil Gaiman did a while back-Sandman was my drug of choice and have most of those but there were loads of different books that interweaved people and stories. Books of Magic and Hellblazer and Sandman all had John Constantine in(maybe black orchid too)-probably more, and Arkham asylam pops up in Sandman too. I need to re-read them all actually- it's been a while.
Also Watchmen , V for Vendetta, Maus and Neil Gaiman did some sandman spin offs-Death ones(all the characters were of the endless-dream,death(total goth),delerium, destiny, desire, destruction and despair. )

well worth checking out if you got a minute

I really liked Harlan Ellison’s Dream Corridor Vol 2 (http://www.amazon.com/Harlan-Ellisons-Dream-Corridor-2/dp/1593074948)……I didn't realize how long he's been in/around the game for a really rich read...also heard this ( http://www.amazon.com/Jonah-Hex-Vol-Face-Violence/dp/1401210953/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228253400&sr=1-1) is being made into a movie...(y)

the only time I seen Hex was in Justice League cartoon. He looks like an interesting character. Maybe like a Punisher version of old west.

I bought Chris Ware's Acme Novelty Library #17 and 18 yesterday. Great, if very sad, stuff.
Also bought a Love & Rockets book. Their reprints are driving me crazy, cause you have to look at every single story in the book to see if you don't already own it. No "this book reprints stories from" blurp anywhere.

I just read (online) the first issue of the following:
American Virgin

Interesting series that had a really abrupt ending.

Doom Patrol

Awesome comic, goes well with Seven Soldiers of Fortune.

Hellblazer

Great stuff, even though it feels a little formulaic after a while.

The Invisibles

One of the most brilliant comics ever written. The plot makes about as much sense as Naked Lunch, but the cool characters and crazy ideas that spiral in and out of each other all make up a sort of timeless reality that never really comes into focus.

I randomly bought my first ever super hero comic book the other week out of boredom and have since bought the next issue. It was the fantastic four. I dont really get why its storm and the black panther though, but haven't cared enough to google it. I assume its related to this cival war thing I was hearing a lot about a few months ago.

They're currently fighting zombie versions of other marvel heros, iron man, wolverine etc, and seem to travel through space with the aid of a gold frog....

Dark Knight Returns was disappointing.
I thought it was amazing, visually & storywise. Miller does the whole near-future dystopian bleakness thing pretty fucking well, even if it does seem a little dated now.

I did find Strikes Again quite a letdown though. It was like more of the same (which is nice), but without improving or adding anything.

I'm wondering what to read next. I'm not an avid comic reader, I've pretty much just read Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The Killing Joke, all the Miller Batmans, the Sin Cities, the first 100 Bullets book and a couple of Spiderman compilations. Basically I like film noir/graphic novel type shit (incidentally I loved the cutscenes in Max Payne 1 & 2, they could have made a decent book out of that).

Any suggestions? Would I like Red Son? Is Kick-Ass any good?

Finally catching up on the rest of The Walking Dead. I left off on Volume 4 about a year ago. Caught up on 5-7 within the past few days (this is what I do with my lunch hour).

The last page on Volume 7 literally made me LOL because it's a little... ridiculous. I felt the series early on was refined and that page itself made it seem more of a somewhat silly, but entertaining, comic book.

I do wonder how long you can really tell such a story without it losing quality. I have heard that it does take a nose dive but I guess I'll find out.

Super excited about the AMC TV series based on it coming out in October. (y)

Bought Batman: Hush and I'm going onto my second read-through already. There are a couple of moments that truly caught me off guard and pulled at my heart strings in ways I didn't expect, well done DC.

Upon a second read, Dark Knight Returns still doesn't tickle my fancy but it's worth checking out if you can snag a copy for cheap.

Next up for me is either going to be Batman R.I.P., Final Crisis, or Marvels.

Can you guys recommend me some comics?

I don't know too much about it, but want to get into it more.
Stuff I enjoyed so far is anything by Daniel Clowes, stuff by Roman Dirge and the Preacher series.

I want to start reading the Scott Pilgrim books as well, before seeing the film.

Not to repeat my favorite comics ad nauseum, but Caribou - some of my favorites have been:

The Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman
Transmetropolitan by Warren Ellis
David Boring by Daniel Clowes
[basically anything by Alan Moore - Top Ten, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Swamp Thing, Promethea]
The Punisher by Garth Ennis
The Invisibles by Grant Morrison
Jimmy Corrigan by Chris Ware
Y The Last Man by Brian Vaughan

Thanks man. I'll try to check some of them out.

I saw some awesome Punisher headphones, but I can't buy them without knowing the comic. Good reason to get into that kinda stuff.

side note: a friend had Cliff Rathburn draw HIS best friend as a zombie for her birthday.

So.
Jealous.

:(

He says that when he marries, he's going to have Cliff draw the wedding portrait. Also jealous of his future wife.

Darren Aronofsky leaving the director's chair for "The Wolverine" film was a devastating blow to me. I thought they were finally going to bring to life an X-Men story that had the depth, grit, and rawness that it deserved. that would have been a wonderful project. I looked forward to that almost as much as a new Beastie Boys record. and no im not an Aronofsky fanboy, I just think the darkness of his technique was perfectly suited for such a dark character.

i don't know if i can ever forgive marvel for fucking up the x-men movies so bad. or at least for not making at least one valid attempt to do the comics justice.

There was an article in Rollingstone (why do I still get that Bestbuy? I haven't paid for it in years!?) about Grant Morrison, the author of The Invisibles.

I went back and read the first 5 volumes of The Invisibles now that I'm considerably more well-rounded and it was really really fascinating. There's a guide to the series floating around the torrentsphere, too. It's kind of like reading an inverse of Moore's Promethea.

That is, Morrison's strengths are pop culture/literary esoterica and Moore's are cultic/religio-mystic.

I'm rambling, go read The Invisibles.

I officially finished every walking dead comic recently which then sucked me into the comic world. My boyfriend is a fan of some of the original spiderman comics that I refused to even glance at a while ago but I sat and read some (also a little bit of batman so far) and am really starting to understand why he loves it. I just opened this thread for the first time so I'm very behind on the conversation also dunno what all was already spoken about. I officially finished every walking dead comic recently which then sucked me into the comic world. My boyfriend is a fan of some of the original spiderman comics that I refused to even glance at a while ago but I sat and read some (also a little bit of batman so far) and am really starting to understand why he loves it. Knowledge wise (on a wide spectrum I mean) i'm pretty noobish but I was wondering if someone could post a long list of good comics for a new reader?

If you enjoyed The Walking Dead I suggest reading all of the following series...starting with these:

”Scalped” (http://www.amazon.com/Scalped-Vol-1-Indian-Country/dp/1401213170) by Jason Aaaron

”Y: The Last Man” (http://www.amazon.com/The-Last-Man-Vol-Unmanned/dp/1563899809/ref=pd_sim_b_2) by Brian K Vaughn

”DMZ Vol. 1: On the Ground” (http://www.amazon.com/DMZ-Vol-1-On-Ground/dp/1401210627/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1335882565&sr=1-1) by Brian Wood

Marvels by Kurt Busiek/Alex Ross

A definite must-read. 10/10.

The Killing Joke by Alan Moore/Brian Bolland

Another home run from the Batman Catalogue. Pick it up! 10/10.

Batman and Son by Grant Morrison/Andy Kubert

Small disappointment. I had read a lot of stuff that takes place after the events of the comic and I guess after finding it for cheap on Amazon I would try to bridge the gap between events with this. It's alright, but not worth getting. 5/10.

Essex is a good read, sad, but good.

Just finished Che: a graphic biography (http://www.amazon.ca/Che-Graphic-Biography-Spain-Rodriguez/dp/1844671682)
A great over-view, I adore almost any historical graphic novel on any topic. I DEMAND MORE.

My Friend Dahmer (http://www.amazon.ca/My-Friend-Dahmer-Derf-Backderf/dp/1419702165)
I think I`m the first person to take this out from the local Library! I absolutely devoured this, such a creepy and engrossing read. The artwork was beyond stellar as well.

Yeah that was great...the art was very Crumb like and the storyline was like Psycho meets Dazed and Confused...I liked the timeline footnotes/point of reference at the books end as well...exact points related in it kept reminding me of an interview he did with his father before his death that I saw months back...

Finished ”DMZ Vol. 12: The Five Nations of New York” (http://www.amazon.ca/DMZ-Vol-12-Five-Nations/dp/1401234798) by Brian Wood...wow they went out with a kick, well done, didn’t see this conclusion coming down this way at all...(y)

”Get Jiro! (http://www.amazon.com/Get-Jiro-Anthony-Bourdain/dp/1781163693)...Anthony Bourdain cranks out an amusing graphic novel...fit for foody’s in particular but fun for all...should have invested a 4 book run or something as it jams too much into it with an unsatisfactory conclusion...know your sushi etiquette or else!

A collection of Kate Beaton's online (http://harkavagrant.com/archive.php) comics. My ego expands every time I understand a reference in her work!

I finally caught up and finished Y: The Last Man.

It did make me wonder how much, if any, input Vaughan had from women when writing the book. Sometimes I'd raise an eyebrow when reading it.

Overall though, I dug it. (y)

Shit, comics. It's 2012. Not 1996; not a Kevin Smith film. Read a proper book.

I just watched Chasing Amy last night and had a great time with some friends. I wish it was 1996. Seemingly shocking stuff back then seems so tame now.

Read a bit of Gail Simone's Birds of Prey. So far I like it though the art I'm not super wild about. Still I'll keep up with it.

I've heard many good things about Saga. I'm interested. It's a matter of getting around to it though. Too many comics and games and homework and work and a wedding to plan. I wish I didn't need sleep. (y)

”Scalped: Trail’s End” (http://www.amazon.ca/Scalped-Vol-10-Trails-End/dp/1401237347)…pretty disappointing ending to series that started weak and gained wicked momentum…Jason Aaron kinda hints in the prologue that he may revisit the series, eventually…

”Walking Dead 16: A Larger World” (http://www.amazon.ca/The-Walking-Dead-Volume-16/dp/1607065592/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1357669951&sr=1-1 ) not a very memorable issue…
