I agree. That's like putting a Butterball in a vegetarian's freezer. Give that CD to someone who appreciates turkey.

Er, wait a minute… I'm not insinuating that the TMU is turkey. I love TMU. Bad analogy.

Something tells me he would really dig that. In fact, Turkey Tasting Butterball sounds like a great line for the new album. Please tell me what he says. ;)

This is kind of fucked up. But its also kind of funny too. Well I never got the cd. I was waiting to get the vinyl and then I never ended up getting it. I didn't even download it to listen to it. I was waiting so I could have the whole thing as an album with the artwork the case and everything. The only time I heard any of the songs was when I went to one of the gala events.

I love that an "I hate TMU" thread has convinced you to go at and buy a copy. Good move (y). Come back and let us know what'cha think. Unless of course you hate it. In which case you should PM Icy w/ your negative Nancy comments and mail your CD to Randetica.

that's a good phrase for it!

i'll take any extra copies after Randetica! i only have it on vinyl and mp3.

i do have to say the LP artwork is FANTASTIC! i love the tiny Beasties hanging out with wires and daddy Yauch sweeping up.

I bet most of the musical geniuses who didn't "get" TMU would probably prefer to listen to Limp Bizkit or Akon or some shit.

I bet that's the biggest generalization you've ever made, Robert. I don't listen to either, and TMU is a solid 6/12 for me. Icy doesn't prefer those artists either, I'm sure. Really there's not much to get. Your favourite band makes some instrumentals, decides to leave it at that, throws themselves on the mercy of the audience.

Marginalizing much?

I'm sure they'll make another TT5B next time for all the kids who were dissappointed by the lack of lyrics.

If someone can't see that TMU was the most creative thing they've done in the past 10 years or so, then their taste in music is suspect, don't you agree?

It's like the world's finest pizza base with no topping; it's just another pizza base. It's not an album. It's just some tracks, with or without lyrics. I think it was one of the dumbest moves they've ever made, personally. The six songs I like I think are great, no doubt. But the rest is just nonsensical to me.

It's not marginalizing, either. That's exactly what happened. The good thing about the Beastie Boys is that they won't care either way. They went through their much-loved recording, playing and touring processes and had a blast. They're a bunch of dudes who just love doing the music thing. There comes a point however, where they have to consider why they're making the music. Again, they probably don't care that they're fucking up their legacy. They just want sandwiches more than they want a legacy or something.

Your point about people wanting another TT5B is counter-intuitive, too. That album gets more heat than TMU on here. And I liked TT5B and not even I want to hear another one.

The Mix Up was the best Beach Boys album in years.

My theory was that TMU was directly in response to all the "FAN-ANGER" over the lack of instruments on TT5B.

I gather Icy is more into electronic music these days. :D TMU is not something I "mind" listening to, but I don't feel the need to listen to it as often as some other shit, every other Beastie album included.

I like it in a few senses: first, as loungy/cocktail music, and I especially like the concept that it may be used for breaks and remixed with a continuing life later on. It had a great life as background music to the Harper Collins book promotions and for the B&W videos. Who was it, Waxpoetics I think who called it backward engineered Hip Hop? No, it's not like hearing LTI, PB (when I could appreciate it), CYH, IC, HN (when I could appreciate it) or TT5B (my favorite), but I see it more for its concept than its content.

Biggest missed opportunity has to go to The Mix Up; could have been the singing-and-playing Check Your Head.

Dude, I don't know why, but it's driving me INSANE how you keep taking every opportunity you can to pan this album.

Hey, Robert. I'm just one person with my opinion. I would have liked something other than what I got. I'll live, and I'm glad it gets love round these parts. My expectations got the better of me. That said, I'm quite entitled to have wished for more, no?

Delightful Swiss chocolates, which i ended up having some of :D
I gather Icy is more into electronic music these days.

hell yeah

anyway, i thought the album was loaded with filler tracks like the stuff you skip on Hello Nasty. i kept waiting for a track i liked but it just never came. Also part of me didn't really believe that they made a whole album of instrumentals, i was sort of expecting some mad hidden track with sweet vocals.

i suppose if anyone wants to adopt it they can, it needs a loving home. you can even have the lovely gift box it came in :p

ps, i really dont remember making this thread, i clicked on the BG forum, saw icy manipulator and thought HEY THAT's ME!

I like TMU.

You know what its best for? Getting up on a sunny Sunday morning, having a wake and bake, throwing TMU on the turntable and cranking it while you cook bacon and eggs for breakfast.

I couldn't think of a better start to a day.

I like the instrumental stuff alot. Mostly I like listening to MCA play bass he's got a really unique style. Its like sort of a funky kind of style but its really very smooth at the same time. I got turned on to people like Miles Davis and John Coltrane when I was a teenager after listening to the in sound from way out with my friend Bob over and over again.

I play it a fair bit when I'm cooking. Maybe I'll grow up and get into it later.

Mikizee, I'm pretty sure you described the best way to hear it. I used to get baked and listen to the shit out of it. I could never get past 'Electric Worm' though, because I'd be skipping back over 10-15 second portions of songs to hear all the loops. Electric Worm was particularly notorious for that.

Let's say I like 7 of the 12 songs, then. Help me be a better person, guys. :(

Kid Presentable
01-07-2008, 06:24 PM
Alright, I'm not faded. But I'm playing it now. We should have pretty smooth sailing up until Rat Cage. Even then, it's not like I'm gonna put on a swim cap and start turning furniture over , growling.

I'm just sayin', for someone who only mildly likes the album, you sure do seem to comment on it a lot.
And your comments are always these passive-agressives jibes. I just wish you'd decide one way or the other if you like it or not.
Your "7 out of 12" opinion drives me nuts.

Robert, now that I know it drives you nuts, I'll keep going. You'll notice I comment on the album in the appropriate threads. My particular remark in the best album of 2007 thread wasn't echoed by anybody. NO MAN IS AN ISLAND!

If I'd seen the Gala shows mayhaps I wouldn't be so ambivalent about things. 7 out of 12 is subject to change; sometimes I can't be bothered with Freaky Hijiki. I'm a bad person, and the Beastie Boys probably want me dead, right?

RobMoney$

You're entitled to your opinion of the album, whatever it may be.
I just wish you had an opinion. "7 out of 12" is not an opinion.
BTW, 7 good songs out of 12 is practically a BANGER in todays music scene. What other album has 7 "good" songs on it?

You're high profile around here man, the Beasties need your support.
