View Full Version : I've gotta get this thing out of my house !!

My AIFST dvd showed up in the mail yesterday (yes, I'm aware that I'm ~2 yrs late making my fandom questionable to some, and this an annoying post to many -- sorry).
I was so excited to watch it that I canceled my plans to go to a party. And so there I was, on a Saturday night watching this thing for over 4 hours -- FOURS HOURS!! I watched it in regular mode, I watched it a cappella, and then regular again with my head phones and subtitles on, and then finally the commentary (sounded like Mike D needed some tissues). When I finally pulled myself away to go to sleep, I had that same feeling I got after being on the rail for the first time at a Beastie show. Wacky dreams and all -- I dreamt that I was watching that mucus commercial w/ the little green guys, and AH was doing commentary. (Oh wow, I just figured that out -- Mike D needing tissue…)
I have the DVD boxed up in the other room but I still feel it calling me -- I think I still have the bonus footage to get to - isn't that where the VW necklace saga takes place!?!?! (Remember that Sex in the City episode when Miranda ate cake out of her trash can?).
Anyhoo, I doubt that I’ll find anyone willing to converse w/ me here about this DVD as it's such old news to all of guys but at least I got to tell my story.
I get the feeling that I am now about to receive some mean responses:p….

Welcome to loving that DVD, there's so much to watch & geek out on. Be sure to follow all the easter eggs, such as the re-start of Brass Monkey. All all the bonus footage of the MMM intros? Love.

well??
You found a way to keep the monkey on your back even after the tour!
You betcha. Big ass monkey too. Good thing the Fla show is only 8 wks away :D
Now,after another 2.5 hr stint this evening, it's time for a break (my neck hurts). So, all this time in, and still haven't come across these easter eggs or BBQ competitions of which you guys speak??
I do, however, have some fav highlights from my viewings thus far ;
Adrock on the commentary: ' I love my little towel' /'that's not my pee"/" I like this song" (RRNN)
Yauch: "Hit it Mixy"
Mike D dancing on the beach..... "I was mad, and when I showed it to my viewing ppl, I knew I was f'd because it had to stay in"
Oh, and for some reason, my fav was Adrock (while watching some crazy fast grids) "yea, I'm going throw up in a minute"
I was actually at this show- It was the same day I moved in to Manhattan (ah!)- but was 4th row from the very back so it's pretty cool to catch what I didn't actually see.
And now, I must try to sleep, for tomorrow I shall try to watch the flip*mode*squad* thingy. (need to be well rested for that)
Thank you, Mr. Hornblower. Thank you! xo

OK, you're doing great, just stay in it. Do some slow neck rolls, drink plenty of fluids, maybe read a little about the ramifications of Bhutto's assassination in the global war on terrorism to calm you down. We need you fresh for tomorrow.
When you get back in the game, look at the bottom of your screen for a little icon periodically throughout the flick. I KNOW one comes near the top of Brass Monkey, but that's all I recall. You can do it!
Mike D dancing on the beach..... [I]"I was mad, and when I showed it to my viewing ppl, I knew I was f'd because it had to stay in"

OK, i forgive u for sending me back to the smack because last night I caught the best bonus footage on the DVD for the first time. You get it by watching in "detour mode," from the extras menu. (These are the "easter eggs" I was talking about even though they're not hidden. There's probably hidden ones too. Shit.)
SPOILER:
The most fuckin awesome piece of detour footage comes right as they're about to do their pre-show huddle. The three of them are going over the lyrics to Hello Brooklyn, figuring out who says what when and clarifying lyrics. This is the type of thing I love to watch. The vibe between them is amazing, and Yauch's calmly answering questions with a basketball in hand. What I found most interesting is how Adam H tells Yauch "I don't know it, I'm following you" and says "I'm winging this one!" And then of course he goes out and nails it and they make it look so easy. Professionals. :)

The commentary is awesome :)
I also liked the whole Nathinel Hornsblower thing(although it was werid)
and then the 1,000 takes of Shazam! was cool
And also the show beginers
and the Shooting of the audience and those weird chineese guys singin' intergalactic I think
And then the one dude before brass monkey, GET ON THE CAMERA NOW!
We are dressed in black...sorry, I'm listening to egg man!

Dear GB,
Day 3: Heart rate has returned to normal. But oooh, boy, I am Saa-leep-y! This 2am business is wearing me down.
Tonights main take aways;1) commentary of young Russell Simmons/gangsta dance. (and how it made one the boys go into that doggie laugh -- where you gasp for air) 2) Intergalactic. I'm trying so hard not to use "Bad Ass", but man, it was just sooo freak'n Bad Ass!!!! AH w/ the hat waving, AY all smiles... (I was the level juuust above that magic)

completely random AIFST trivia:
camera operator Nadia Dajani (mentioned in the commentary), was featured in the final episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 6.
she was the girl in the waiting room who Larry takes on a date to the movies.
they have a hilarious scene in which they both quiz each other on why they were in the gastroenterologists office in the first place...

And finally: Critereon Collection. Oh god, you won't leave the house for months. It's not quite the junk aifst is because you've already seen all the videos. HOWEVER!

^ ok, ok, i'll page vinnie for you one more time, but YOU have to find some shoes and go meet him in the astro van, i don't want him in my house again.
if (and only if) you are in detour mode, which you select from the extra section of the menu (it's in the same list where you turned on commentary) then you will see the things pop up as you watch the movie. it will look like a battery icon, and will appear in the lower right-hand section of the screen. when you see it, click "enter" on the remote. when the detour is over, it will take you back to the regular movie.
i hope that helps! actually, i hope you are asleep given the time diff.

Oh, I care!!! I'm right there with ya. I wanna know everything. I kept replaying that bit (in slow-mo then w/ subtitles to get all the goods) and thought it was kinda funny how all three were in different moods. AY giggling and (talking in to the mic) saying can I get a "stop and get a sando" and "hit it mixy". Mike D wasn't about to laugh along though, he was all bidness there and back to the stage even when AY smiled at him. This was opening night of the theatrical release of Awesome...(goes to look for the ticket stub) on 3/23/06, not the camera peeps view.
It was pumped in one of those fancy sound theaters in surround sound all around you- it sounded sick (although I think I remember thinking it could of been louder- not to say it wasn't, I think I just wanted it cranked up to an insane level!)
It wasn't announced that they'd be there or anything, but I had a "feeling" (read: I hoped my ass off and was so psyched when they walked up front when the lights went up!). I heard they showed up for the start of a viewing at the battery park theater and introduced it and then jetted over to talk to us. We so got the better of that. I don't remember much about the actual Q&A- normal like people freaking out and professing their love type stuff- although as I remember being surprised by a few questions being well thought out and right on in terms of asking about the flick (Yauch answered like all the questions- they kept deferring to him). I was just to jazzed to be in the same room with them I couldn't keep my shit together to think of any good questions to ask(thus my surprise when others could). It was an awesome end to that night that I will probably be stoked about forever.

So happy you included the exact date. I just looked on my calendar and I was in Cali on bidness that wk. That eases the pain a bit...
Actually, no. I'm still sad that I missed out.:(

march 23rd was the one-night digital screening in theaters across the country. they aired "A Day In The Life of Nathanial Hornblower" and then screened the film.
I'm pretty sure it played at the NuArt in L.A.
it was released for a theatrical run a week later on March 31.
Mike D was on his Blackberry the whole night during their appearance at Union Square.
I also remember them telling the crowd there would be a surprise at the end of the screening and everyone should stick around...
there was another screening that week that was on March 28th. that was considered the "NY Premiere" with some SNL cast members there and Joan Jett and Chuck D were also there, it was at Loews 34th St. across from Hammerstein...
that was the one with the after-party down the block in some hip swanky Chelsea nightclub. the band was all decked out in suits...

So what did Mike D and AH get out of this? Just a fav to AH? Fun? Surely not for the $$. Guess it could of been for band exposure?! Seems like they had to attend a lot of premiers, Letterman, Q&A's, etc. for Yauch's hobby(aka my obsession).
YoungRemy - did you attend any/all of the above?

Was the Letterman crowd lame? They couldn't have deserved to be there. Not like me. :( ( I did get to see the Ramones when I went to Letterman though...)

I went to a theater in Sacramento to see the film, and I remeber thinking that it could have been way louder. It was a good audience though, nearly packed. No special appearances though...
Seeing it on a theater screen, I remember, was almost overwhelming. We left feeling dizzy but pleased.

there are plenty more eggs on there! keep a look out for the icons at the bottom. ma fave is DEF the beginning of brass monkey. you get to find out which mike AH is "god damning".
But WHY is he?? (it's MMM, right?)
You get it by watching in "detour mode," from the extras menu. (These are the "easter eggs" I was talking about even though they're not hidden. There's probably hidden ones too. Shit.)
So, I've been watching this thing for at least 6 months straight, right? and I have yet to find one "easter egg" -- is that just hip lingo for "icon"? :( AND, did I make this up or did I hear that you can take the detour on the extras, too? like the Never Stop Rapping Yet"...

*offer junkie more stuff* Izzy - have you seen the Criterion Collection DVD yet...it has some great commentary, too.
OK, I'm ready to get started on this now.
But first, a question....
no, two different things. criterion collection here. (http://www.amazon.com/Beastie-Boys-DVD-Video-Anthology/dp/B00004YZGR)
^^^ there's 2 versions? What's the collector's series all about? worth the extra cheese?
YoungRemy

stop the madness.
the DVD Anthology is one thing, the AIFST DVD is another
the DVD Anthology is part of the Criterion Collection.
If I am not mistaken, the Anthology is only available as a Criterion Collection DVD. there are many easter eggs and mulitiple video/audio options available on said DVD
the AIFST has a bonus disc, which was originally exclusive to Best Buy, which is now available for purchase at online retailers.
the AIFST bonus disc includes the BBQ Cook Off and the Shazam video in many different angles and audio remixes
aside from the AIFST bonus disc, there are hidden features available on the regular DVD for AIFST. these features include detour mode(turn detour mode "ON" and wait for the little battery icon to appear) as well as audio options (commentary, a capella, etc.) and video (Grid Mode) options.
other extras include the Jerome Crooks, tour intros, and fan commentary(Never Stop Rappin' Yet)
did I make myself clear?

Yes, but (and I'm sure "buts" aren't welcome any longer) I'm asking about the Criterian dvd. See, there are 2 types and I don't wanna get the wrong one (ya know, like how I missed out on the bonus dvd w/ AIFST).:o

Yes, Myrtle, it's just an icon. ;):p Many movies have places you can click for bonus material that are hidden or not as apparent as the user-friendly icons in this here flick. Hence the term.
As for the detours of the other extras, I don't know -- find out & report back!

Oh, just saw this. Go to extras menu --> detour mode --> on. The instructions are there, basically just click "enter" on your remote any time you see an icon (it looks like a battery power icon) in the lower right corner of your screen. enjoy!
SPOILERS:
imo the best detour is the pre-show huddle, followed by the brass monkey re-start. i also love the montage where they count how many times that one guy says "get excited! be on the dvd!" last week my friend pointed out that probably no one in his section had any idea about the aifst project, which makes the footage funnier.

I did find the G rated Body Movin' cute, tho. For those who prefer not to see Yauch lose his head (but why then does he have the neck brace in the next scene... hmm?
