View Full Version : How many TVs do you have in your home?

Yesterday I realized that I have a lot of TVs.

3 on the first floor (two aren't hooked up but I have had them for 24 years and they still work great if I ever need to hook them up).

2 on the middle floor.

1 on the top floor.

I have too many TVs.

How many do you have?

oh yeah...this is what inspired this thread:

Researchers: Homes have more TVs than people
NEW YORK (AP) -- The average American home now has more television sets than people.

That threshold was crossed within the past two years, according to Nielsen Media Research. There are 2.73 TV sets in the typical home and 2.55 people, the researchers said.

With televisions now on buses, elevators and in airport lobbies, that development may have as much to do with TV's ubiquity as an appliance as it does conspicuous consumption. The popularity of flat-screen TVs now make it easy to put sets where they haven't been before.

Rick Melen, a facilities manager, has three sets in the Somers, New York, home he shares with his wife. That doesn't count the bathroom set that broke down and hasn't been replaced or the speakers installed near their hot tub, allowing them to watch a wide screen set through a window.

"It's really just a matter of where your living takes place, what rooms you tend to spend your time in," Melen said on Thursday. "Other appliances you can move from room to room but if you have cable, you can't move a television."

His wife might want to watch something while she's cooking while he's got a baseball game on downstairs, he said.

Half of American homes have three or more TVs, and only 19 percent have just one, Nielsen said. In 1975, 57 percent of homes had only a single set and 11 percent had three or more, the company said.

David and Teresa Leon of Schenectady, New York and their four-year-old twins have seven sets, plus an eighth they haven't set up yet. They include TVs in both the parents' and kids' bedrooms, the family and living rooms and one in the kitchen that is usually turned to a news station.

"No one ever sits down for more than a few seconds in this house," said Teresa, a stenographer. "This way you can watch TV while you're moving from room to room, folding laundry or taking care of the kids."

In the average home, a television set is turned on for more than a third of the day -- eight hours, 14 minutes, Nielsen said. That's an hour more than it was a decade ago. Most of that extra TV viewing is coming outside of prime time, where TVs are on only four minutes more than they were 10 years ago.

The average person watches four hours, 35 minutes of television each day, Nielsen said.

While people are watching more television, ratings for the big broadcast networks have declined steadily. That's a function of the greater number of channel choices available in each home, the company said.

One new Nielsen finding -- that young people aged 12 to 17 watched 3 percent more television during the season that ended in May than they had the previous year -- is a particular relief to TV network executives.

For a few years, Nielsen had been finding that TV viewing among teenagers was flat or even declining, a trend blamed on the Internet or the popularity of electronic games and other devices.

"There are just more opportunities for them to watch whatever they want to watch," said Patricia McDonough, Nielsen's senior vice president of planning policy and analysis.

Oddly, one of the driving factors is teenage girls watching more TV late at night or early in the morning, she said.

One in my room...one in the main room...and I think another one of my roommates has his own. So 3. But 5 people live here. And the main TV is pretty much just used for XBox360.

I also only have on television.

My mother's house, on the other hand, has five. One in the living room, one in the basement, one in her bedroom, one in my room, and one in the room where the exchange student sleeps.

like i said, two of them aren't hooked up but I can't give away since I've had them since 1984 and they are in really really good condition even though they are really small.

One isn't really used to watch television but more to pull samples from DVDs and VHS.

Leaving 3 that actually get used for watching TV. 2 of those have consoles hooked up to them.

But stilll, whichever way you look at it.....too many TVs. Especially since there are only 2 people living in the house.

my house now has 5 tv's and 7 people living in it. 1 is in the upstairs living room, 1 is in one of my roommates bedroom, and 3 are in the downstairs living room. 2 of the 3 in that room are small and are only used when we are watching multiple sporting events at the same time, and they are both on mute at all times.

none of the 5 are actually owned by me, so when i move out i probably won't have a tv at all unless i find a roommate who has one

Going off on a tangent a bit here, but my dentist has a tv set into the ceiling in his surgery - above the chair. Quite a nice touch i think. Although his head gets in the way sometimes, and you can't hear anything if the drill is on.

He ought to close-caption that sucker. Or else play DVDs with the subtitles on. (y)

oh yeah?...well my dentist has this virtual reality like mask that’s like wearing a huge freakin set of binoculars on your head and he can pipe in DVD or cable feed, headphones and all…however the rig is so cumbersome, he’s always bumping into it and shit…plus I’m to nervous to focus on anything other than getting out of that chair a.s.a.p…but I guess it was designed for nervous patients cause you can’t see a thing they’re doing or about to do to you….

Ha! Moot, that sounds nuts! I know what you mean about wanting to get out of that chair though...
I don't usually watch the TV to be honest, i just close my eyes (i really don't need see what drills/needles he's putting into my mouth), put on my ipod and maintain a vice-like grip on the chair arms.

Seriously it's like something strait out of a William Gibson novel....I should know better than to go to a dentist named Morphius...;)

1 in my apartment that i almost never use. tv sucks, and i'll usually just go to someone else's house to watch movies i didn't illegally download. 2 tv's at my parents house, one in the living room, one in my folks' bedroom.

Auton
01-09-2008, 09:21 AM
and no i'm not bragging or whatever about illegally downloading movies even thought it sounds like it. i think it's an assholish thing to do, i do it because i already can't afford the cd's i buy, and renting movies is mondo expensive. if i've already seen the movie ill just buy the dvd. anyway, nobody wanted to read that, and that's fine. i just wanted to satisfy my neuroticness by letting it be known that my previous post did not indicate a pro-illegal-downloading viewpoint.

is it expensive to hook your computer up with the tv?

or will that new all digital thing make it harder to do?

If you have a tv/video-out on your computer then you're good to go. And some cables.
