View Full Version : Would you work at McDonald's if you were unemployed?

And in desperate need of some bank? Conservative types waffling on about the unemployed scum of the earth remark often that there should be no limit on the kind of work a person is prepared to do. Personally, I'd rather test rusty syringes gathered in parks.
Think about it, though. At your age? Would you?Yes you might have in the past, but now?

I'd go to In-N-Out first, but if they wouldn't take me... then I'd do McDonald's.
But, my shitty job fallback is U-Haul. Heck, I still do it every other weekend just for some extra dough.
Anyway, doing McDonald's would be better than being homeless.

The pay and conditions are shit though. Plus, what if people you knew came in? Isn't there a social stigma (honest question)?

If they really wouldn't have me anywhere else and I was in desperate need for money, then probably yes.
Though I would rather eat my own legs before working at Burger King. Their employees (at least in the Netherlands) are thick as poo, rude and incredibly slow.

So, why aren't there more 20+ year olds working in non-managerial roles at these places?

I've worked at wendys before when I was 16. I was viewed as being responsible cause I at least had a job.
I'd be better just dead if I were to work there now cause my resume is way to good to be flippin burgers.
However, I wouldn't mind delivering pizzas again. Averaging 200 bucks a night in tips is decent and also it was adventurous.

Maybe we get too many handouts here, because very few people would even consider a job there. And what about the actual homeless? Should they head along to McDonald's for an application?
*note: Tones are lost on this thing. I'm not trying to say you're wrong, just asking.

i don't think mcdonalds wants homeless people working for it
they smell
I was HONESTLY considering it over the summer, until I got a call back from the job I have now- which I absolutely love.
It's kinda sad, but not? At Burger King I recall they paying something like $8-9 an hour, and around here that's same for a cozy cubical-type place.

Several times a year, I see someone working a job like that and I think "I wish I could do that for a few months." I'd love to have a job where I could call in sick and the work wouldn't back up. I never really get away from my job now. I haven't in about 15 years.
I wouldn't work in fast food or in a nursing home. I decided that when I was a teenager. Working a crap job in retail is more my style. Or I could do bank teller.

the only real good thing about working at a gorcery store is basically you get to hang out and goof around with friends all day and get insurance and benefits and check out all the hot moms. other than that the whole experience makes you feel like a straight up jackass. everyone is fucking pissed. imagine working with a bunch of dennis leary's.

I was never willing to work a job where I had a uniform. But sometimes that seems like a good idea now. I get sick of matching blouses and shoes to suits.

=/ Wow.
It's true. I don't know what it's like in other countries, but over here it's really bad. Everyone I know also agrees that McDonalds staff are waaaay better. Here at BK, you have to wait for at least 5 minutes eventhough you only have 1 person in front of you. And they always get your order wrong. ALWAYS. And they ask things like 'Do you want cheese with that?' when you've ordered a coke.
*sigh*

I'd like to think I would take whatever legitimate job I needed if I had to. But I know that, for a while when I was living in Canada, I basically
had to take a job as a custodian to get by. (I was working illegally, so I needed a job that would pay cash under the table.)
I suck at that stuff and hate doing it, as well, so I quit after a couple weeks because I just couldn't stand it. I was lucky that something
else was available shortly after, and I was still able to make rent. But I just didn't have the character to discipline myself to become a
good janitor when the chips were down, and I think that kind of sucks.

I mean, my job at the moment isn't all that mentally stimulating, and they don't pay well, and i don't get benefits.
mcdonalds has benefits. i could work there.
mikizee
01-08-2008, 07:56 PM
I remember some benefits.
Like a steady stream of 15-16 yr old hot girls coming to work there. (I was 17 at the time).
Or, at 5 mins to 11pm, (when we closed on weeknights), we would look at each other and say 'hmmm..... just to be safe, we better put a couple of baskets of fries in to cook as well as 60 nuggets and 20 crispy chicken patties, JUST in case we get busy in the last 5 minutes.'
So close time would come and I would stuff my face with delicious deep fried goodness for about 45 minutes.
Luckily my metabolism was much faster back then, I never put on a pound of weight.

It depends on Carmen Santiago, I think. Isn't a crappy job called a McJob in certain parts of the world? I had no idea Bitties in the BK lounge was referring to The Netherlands.
As a kid, my mom worked at McDonald's as a second job, when we had some rough financial times. We were on welfare, for a time, too -- which is kind of the dole, but with a serious stigma. And there was no stigma for my college buddy who worked at McDonald's -- just free food for all his friends!
Working for someone else requires pride, morality, and integrity. If you have those things, you could work for McDonald's, or anywhere else, if needed.

You know, I'd work there only if it was a last resort. Like, only if all my other fall-back jobs (Subway, retail, movie theaters) weren't hiring. I see how people treat McDonald's employees and it's a pretty shitty job. That's why I'm always super nice to them, even if they accidentally screw up my order.

not quite mcd's, but close...
there is a new mcdonalds in the world for people who are unemployed / students / artists or otherwise in flux BUT too over-educated / old / squeamish to submit to the golden arches.
it's called starbucks. the pay is still crap and it's still a fast food job. but you get health insurance and *poof* you're not stigmatized. plus it comes with great perks like free coffee, discounts, a cool gay friend, a cool wise older friend with three phd's, cool tattoo guy, perky upwardly mobile student girl, brooding artist dude, belligerent conspiracy theorist, nerdy music critic, a few hilarious slackers and, like mccdonalds, excellent pot connections. if you work there for a year, at least two bands will form and at least twenty customers will bang your single colleagues.
that job, i have done. (y)
EDIT: beware, the pastry case is worse than the mcd's fries. AND, everyone cleans. so yes, i've cleaned poop off the bathroom floor. just keepin it real.

My sister-in-law is is a manager at a Mcdonalds. And yes, she gets paid a lot more than me. But she gets covered in grease and i get to sit in a nice, clean office.
It never appealed to me when i was younger/a student either. I worked in a cinema part time then.

The three main reasons people find themselves homeless are addiction, mental illness and physical disability.
I have been homeless and I would do whatever the fuck it was I had to do to keep that from happening again as long as it was something that was not gonna put me back in jail. Being in jail is worse that being on the street.
What also must be kept in mind is that nothing is forever. A job like McDonalds should be a stepping stone on to something else, not a final destination.
Homeless people can get jobs without a permanent address. There are various churches and social organizations in every city that will supply a homeless person with a 'proof of address' letter so they may go and get proper identification. The reason alot of people stay homeless is that there is very little incentive pull themselves up and do for themselves when there are so many other people doing for them. The city of Chicago makes it very comfotable for the homeless.

I'd like to say no. I think I only would if I had exhausted every legitimate and illegitimate option open to me. But if push came to shove, I would do what I'd have to.
Eating there, on the other hand. I would have to be completely destitute and have failed at growing, hunting, and stealing my own food before I would consider seriously turning to McDonalds as a source of nutrition. While I don't consider myself some crazy militant hippie person (I am perfectly fine with deodorant, for example,) I am strongly against McDonalds for many reasons. And while I don't have anything against McDonalds employees not on the corporate level, I have to admit that I consider people who treat McDonalds as if it were real food to be complete fools.

Well, I'm not saying it doesn't taste good.
I bet human shit would taste just as good if it was processed and altered as much as McDonalds "meat" is. I too crave their hashbrowns and milkshakes sometimes. Luckily for me, my Ego is strong enough to let my Id know that eating it would be a bad idea.
