Tomorrow I have a dentist appt. I haven't been in, like, 4 years due to fear, lack of insurance... Gross, right? Whatever. They look okay from the outside at least, but I know I've got a few cavities in the back. :"\

I'm terrified the dentist is gonna think me all white trash or something because of my mouth's "condition". And that's not the case at all (me being white trash- I just couldn't afford to go).

I HATE having x-rays done. I gag. Last time they had to use child-sized pieces because I couldn't stop gagging, and my mouth in general was apparently "very small".

I hate the smell of the gloves. Flouride always makes me pukey afterward. I hate the smell of the office in general. The sounds- OMG! Just typing about it makes me want to cry.

So, I'm going in for a cleaning, exam and consultation- blablabla. Eventually, I'll have to go back for more work. My mother has me convinced anesthesia (not a local) is really dangerous. But at this point, I don't care.

HALP!

I rarely go to the dentist, and had my first cavities filled last year. Local anesthesia, not nearly as uncomfortable as I'd thought it would be.
Just hold still while they do the work and you'll be fine. Don't think too much about it -- the anticipation is way way way worse than actually
having the work done.

Flip side is: you'd think that having cavities filled would take care of whatever discomfort your cavities might be causing, right? Yes and no.
Suddenly, very cold liquid can hurt your teeth. Some foods will cause pain unexpectedly, and you'll find you're learning how to chew using
different teeth from time to time. And that's just how it is and will be evermore after the teeth have been "fixed."

I never thought teeth would be ironic, but there you have it.

They totally are.

I wish teeth were still considered socially acceptable to look like shit. Or after rotting, they'd simply fall out and grow back again. Like sharks or whatever.

my dad was self employed when i was in highschool so we didnt have dental coverage. and my university didnt get get a medical plan with a dental until my 4th or so year. so it had been 6 years since Id gone to the dentist and I ended up having 7 cavities.

7!

and i didnt have to get student loans my entire degree because I was working full-time but I had to my final year just to pay my fucking dental bill because silver fillings were fully covered but white fillings were only like 30% or something. so I definately didnt have the 1200 bucks sitting around to pay that sort of bill, so loan it was.

yeah man, no insurance whatsoever. i'm an immigrant with two under the table jobs, and not likely to get good insurance. i'm not concerned about the dental issue, more what am i going to do if i get a urinary tract infection, (that's my biggest fear at the moment) and then that turns into a kidney infection.

-- and when you have to pee, pee.

A girlfriend of mine wound up with an infection because she was always "too busy" to pee and would hold it for hours. (n)

Who me? Nah son, I've been known to get compliments from the ladies about my perfect teeth.

And to be honest the thing about English people is a myth... I don't know anyone with bad teeth or who would go 4 years without a visit to the dentist.

I wouldnt call it a myth, you guys got the bad rap because back when you didnt have coverage by the national health service all y'all had bad teeth. sure it was a generation or so ago and everyone else in the developed world probably had the same problem. regardless they attached the characteristic onto you brits.

I never thought teeth would be ironic, but there you have it.

Obviously its good to have them but teeth are a pain the arse from day one, they are hurt like hell to come thru - remember?
I bet you dont, you blocked out the pain, thats why no one can remember anything from when they were a baby.

Then you get fed loads of horror stories about what can happen to them, so then you put loads of work in maintaining the swines and whenever you eat really really nice things they dont like it.

You then end up having to go the dentists, scaring yourself shitless and paying handsomely for the pleasure.

Then bits stiil fall off and they start to look really shit and have to cut some food out.

And they fall out altogether and you have to have fake ones. (Should have just done that in the first place, its less pissing about)

Bastards.

i think some people who have bad genes end up with crappy mouths and teeth condition regardless of whether they go to the dentist or not, so i wouldn't worry about being looked upon as white trash just because you haven't been in 4 years.

isn't it if you pee right after sex, your odds for a UTI go way down?

Yetra Flam

you have to pee before AND after. i think.

I tried that route. "Well, my mom has bad teeth, and my dad the same..." but my dentist totally blew that one off and said I eat too many acidic foods and sweets or whatever (not true- candy has always made my gums itch- acid, maybe).

Hopefully they won't judge by my inbred appearance, then. But last time all of the hygenists were really nice to me and said I was too pretty to have cavities and stuff, so that was fun as I was tearing up kleenex. Went through the whole box.

i haven't been to the dentist in about.... 6 years? maybe even as long ago as eight. i always use to go every 6 months religiously. the last time i went my wisdom teeth were coming in and they told me if they ever caused me any problems/pain to come back. then they hurted like a bitch for about a mounth but the pain just went away so i never went back. i think i just got use to the pain and my wisdom teeth are doing who knows what to my other teeth.

Yetra Flam

Not that anybody cares, but I went, I was nervous, but overall, I had a good time.

Once again, the hygenist made a comment about my cute shoes, said I was too pretty for cavities... Her insincere ways of placating me really calmed my nerves some. Yup.

I have cavities, but very "small"/camel colored ones- so they want to drill and fill before they progress into full-blown cavities or something, and I go back the day after my 21st.

I FUCKED UP!
