trying to make it big and get their dance crew to win contests like "how she move" and "step up." i don't get why there has to be movies like this, and who watches them. i feel embarrassed at the mere fact that they exist.

There's a vast majority of people who dig 'em- which = $$ $. You know.. The sort who "live life" according to a roll of paper towels.

This goes back to the earliest movies. Every generation has their amateur dance contest or let's put on a show movies. They appeal to younger people -- particularly girls. Because most girls dream of performing. That's why there were Barbies with clothes meant for a Vegas lounge act before there were Barbies dressed as doctors.

By the way, because of you, I've spent the past 20 minutes trying to find spontaneous dance scenes I remember from movies. Damn you. :(

Movies like Fame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4C3CmmGUQk) make me long for the days when pregnant high schoolers got abortions so they could further their dance careers.

I don't think I was ever into those movies to be perfectly honest. And if I was, can't remember. :(

I wish I was a free-spirited dumb ass.

technically, i'm specifically talking about movies that feature rap dance crews competing in competitions to try and get out of the hard life in the inner city. i'm not sure what city. detroit? i think it's detroit.

Would you rather they depict the bleak inner city realities?

Well, Fred and Ginger were using their ballroom dancing technique to get jobs during the depression. Frankie and Annette were escaping their boring suburban lives. The kids in Hair were escaping the Vietnam war. The kids in Fame were dealing with being closeted homosexuals and having to work with Debbie Allen. With Footloose it was religious persecution (I never saw that movie so I'm guessing). Then there was the welding movie. It's always something.

Let's not forget that studios can make these movies for cheap. They've pretty much got a built in audience, and if they really do blow up,
they not only got huge gains on little money, but probably another two to four straight-to-DVD titles they'll make bank on.

I grew up on the South Side of Chicago and Elaine Benes would die laughing if she saw me dance.

to be honest, I am interested in the parts where actual dancing occurs.
As for the rest of the movies? No thanks.

But I think it's because I love dancing, and love TO dance and so those particular parts interest me.

So we can just take all the dancing parts of all the movies in to clips for those who want to see that on DVD or something, and the rest of the shit can go away.

Please :p

Usually the inner city kids conform to the white man's standards and finally receive recognition at the end of those movies. It's really a good message for those of a different ethnicity.

I'm trying to convince my sister she needs to turn the end of wedding ceremony into the mass dance at the end of Dirty Dancing.

"oops up side your head" by the gap band was very nearly our wedding song cos we thought it would be funny to get everyone sitting down on dancefloor doing that silly rowing boat dance people used to do to it.

But then we decided it wasnt that funny.

If you havent already, watch the "you got served" south park, its fuckin genius.

Ah, I was thinking she should do it right after the vows malarkey, before everyone heads to the reception. But she didn't like that suggestion. Or my one of black bridesmaid dresses.
