Not bad, really.

Can't get behind Juno, but it was well acted.

Zodiac got completely shut out.

No Steve Zahn nomination for Rescue Dawn.

I assumed the first week of press about Juno was just kind of a local thing because "hay guyz Diablo Cody lived in Minnesota and the movie takes place in Minnesota" but nope. Dont know why it was so hyped. Its a cute movie and I enjoyed it a lot but its not oscar worthy.

If Javier Bardem doesnt win, Im blowing up Hollywood.

i thought Tommy Lee Jones gave the outstanding performance of "No Country For Old Men", for my money.

Id like to see Hal Holbrook get it for "Into The Wild", but yeah, its gonna be Bardem.

I havn't seen "There Will Be Blood" yet, so im backing "No Country.." in the big categorys.

I haven't seen Assassination of Jesse James... or Lake of Fire. I imagine those are the movies that might be real contenders that I missed.

I think that's it. Haven't seen Atonement, either, but... something tells me "no."

roosta
01-22-2008, 01:26 PM
I have it on good authority that Atonement is shit.

abcdefz

I kind of imagine so. But every now and again, something turns out to be as good as, say, Sense and Sensibility, and I really like it a lot.

But, for instance, I stayed away from the Kiera version of Pride and Prejudice. It just smelled wrong.

"Atonement" is gonna win, mark those words...the academy loves the grandious, epic spectacular...not to say it should win but I bet it will...and Bardem is a real craps shoot as he failed to nail it for "Before Night Falls" so the academy may recognize...I really think Casey Affleck will/should be the sleeper victor,a wickedly subtle performance, robbed the film from Pitt...(y)

i reckon "no country for old men" will take a lot of those. I havent even seen the bloody thing - its just a feeling i get from seeing trailer a million times.

Whats with all the tunes from "enchanted" as well? Thats a poor selection.

:( Nobody cares about my bragging. ugh i'm lame

I'm sad Into The Wild didn't get a best picture nod.

Wow I didn't expect Juno to get all those. Guess I really should see it.

Assassination/Jesse James comes out on DVD Feb. 5, so that's in my queue already.

Must that remember Penn has a tumultous relation with the Academy,no shows, political grandstanding and all....I don't know he'll ever get a nod for director...it was in my top 3 films of the year though...and Vedders soundtrack was superb...(y)

...actually, I think he did do some parties for Mystic River.

And I don't know what I Am Sam was except Oscar bait. I don't know if it's justifiable in any other way.

And I don't know what I Am Sam was except Oscar bait. I don't know if it's justifiable in any other way.

That performance is horrible...then again I maintain playing the part of someone with a mental handicap is a tough go...to nail it without causing insult or overacting...DiCaprio pulled it off in "What's eating Gilbert Grape" and Malkovich did it in “Of Mice and Men”…but Penn was brutal…(n)

I haven't seen Of Mice and Men, but yes yes yes on the DiCaprio. I was amazed to find out he wasn't handicapped.

I think it sums up the snooty elitism of the Oscars that Cate Blanchett is nominated for Best Actress for her wooden melodrama in Elizabeth whereas American Gangster isn't nominated for a single award. It's the same thing as Scorsese not getting a Best Director gong for about 40 years and Goodfellas losing Best Picture to Dances With Wolves. My respect for the Oscars seems to diminish every year.

American Gangster was nominated. for best actress in a supporting role.

Russell Crowe might have been worth a nod, but its a good movie, isnt that enough?

Yeah, but no one cares about that anyway.

I'm just annoyed that while the Oscars is seen as the ultimate accolade in film-making they are still quite biased and unrepresentative in their choices of nominee.

roosta
01-22-2008, 03:50 PM
Although I disagree with alot of oscar choices (Gladiator? Best Actor?) I wouldn't say American Gangster was good enough to be up there. It was good. thats all.

Anyway, No Country For Old men shits on American Gangster from a great height.

Whatever.

I think that there should be more outrage that Gary Oldman has never been nominated...

Actually he should/could have considered for best supporting male in "State of Grace"...besides I thought you would be more upset that Chuck Norris has relinquished his thespian endeavors to pursue political aspirations...look for him to lead the republican ticket in 2012...a sure way to get Cmute to the polls...(y)

padster raised a good point.

american gangster deserved many more nominations. it's an excellent movie, and ridley scott is very consistent for directing good movies. anyways it's perplexing that gangster was barely recognized, but meanwhile juno and its overblown hype was.

sometimes when i see a movie that got showered with oscars i think how bad must other movies be..

here it makes no sense to watch the oscars cause they didnt show most nominated movies yet by that time
