O Brother
Hudsucker (You know, for kids!)
Intolerable Cruelty
BLood Simple
Man Who Wasn't There
Miller's Crossing
Ladykillers

that was difficult to do- the last two I don't know enough about. MC I've only seen once and I skipped Ladykillers
Blood Simple should probably be higher

so many great moments and one-liners that I use from all of the above

Miller's Crossing is the one movie of theirs that pretty much demands repeated viewings. It is really, really dense, and the plotting is...
labyrinthine? Is that the word? I think so.

MC Moot

There is very strong argument to wage that Millers is the best crime/gangster flick ever made...(y)

Yeah, I think so, too. A friend of mine and I still find things to discuss about it.

That, and Memento.

I haven't seen a lot of coen stuff, but the ones I have seen (Fargo, Lebowski, Oh Brother, Arizona) were awesome and are some of my favourite films.
And I've been invited to go see the Dutch premiere of No Country For Old Men next week. I hear it's really good. Weeh I'm excited!

BLOOD SIMPLE
FARGO

MILLER'S CROSSING
BARTON FINK
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE

The first two are kind of a toss up -- I go back and forth. When I saw Blood Simple in the theater I liked it better than when I saw Fargo in the theater. But Fargo holds up better today I suppose. I couldn't re-watch either one at this point.

I have seen all of their other movies, but overall I did not like any of them so I can't rank them.

funny, I enjoyed Intolerable Cruelty... it was at least tolerable for me.
anything with the Coen quirky style is enough for me. Wheezy Joe, the line about Mixed Baby Greens- "what the fuck did you just call me?"

i grew up loving Raising Arizona, not knowing who the Coen Brothers were, but knowing the dark sense of style they brought to a comedy was something I enjoyed- "boy, you gotta panty on your head..."

"keep your god damn hands off ma wife..."

my theory is that most lead characters in a Coen movie are everyday joes who get into extraordinary situations- they plot and scheme their way out but they are in way over their heads... even the comedies feature this Everyman type, the doofus who has things happen TO him, and he haplessly goes through his ordeal without fully thinking everything through...

and the location of each one of their films is an integral part of the stories. the towns and cities and eras become a character in the movie itself-

No Country and Blood Simple feature Texas
Raising Arizona and Fargo feature the name of the town itself.

Lebowski- "lemme tell you about a town way out West, a place they call Los Angalese..."

Millers Crossing, Barton Fink, Hudsucker and O Brother all feature Chicago, Hollywood, New York, and the Deep South in the first half of the 20th Century...

I Heart Coen Bros

Pound for pound, film for film, call it blasphemy but I'll take them over Scorsese...I love them that much...the only other American film directors who intrigue me remotely as much are David Lynch,Jim Jarmusch and Wes Anderson...(y)(y)(y)

Scorsese hasn't made a thoroughly great film since The Age of Innocence, I'm afraid. The Departed was close.

Still, he's had quite a run. Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, The Last Waltz, American Son, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, After Hours,
"Life Lessons," Goodfellas, Innocence... most of us might likely kill to have a career that bad.

I actually prefer "Kundun" over "Age of Innocence"...no one recognizes "Kundun" properly...

Miles ahead of Bringing Out the Dead, though.

Boring?...noooo....the blurry edged cinematography in "Bringing out the Dead" drove me mad...the Stones next record is a soundtrack for Scorsese...may be interesting after years of his movies being laden with their numbers...

George Washington (http://imdb.com/title/tt0262432/) is a masterpiece. Then check out Undertow (http://imdb.com/title/tt0360130/), which is kind of flawed (and more conventional) but still really good.

Supposedly, A Confederacy of Dunces finally landed with him, but we'll see.

I love that book!..nice...hmmmm now to cast Ignatius....maybe Goodman or Devito....:D

John Belushi was in for a while, then John Candy, then Goodman... I think it's Philip Seymour Hoffman right now.

They've been trying to get this going for years, obviously. Soderbergh had it at one point, and I think now is just producing.

MC Moot
01-23-2008, 01:57 PM
I think Goodman would be a shoe-in with his affinity for New Orleans and all but at this point I think Hoffman could pull off anything he set his mind to...although he kind of depresses me as an actor, particularily after seeing "Owning Mahoney"...but you know Ignatius is as sad as he is hilarious...(y)

I'd be fine with either of them. Goodman's a truly underrated actor.

Oh, and:

"Kundun" was moved to the top of your Queue.

That's the first one that really disappointed me. The first chink in their armor.

A lot of good elements in there, but it just doesn't work for me. Especially the climax, except for the "It's a fad" line.

I have to say that the movie Fargo has nothing to do with the city or even North Dakota. :)
It's a very Minnesota movie -- the Coen Bros. are from a suburb of Minneapolis.

O Brother Where Art Thou and Ladykillers are the only ones Ive seen that out and out sucked. Christ those movies blew fucking ass.

Anyway, its difficult to really compare. Its hard to believe that the same dudes who made Raising Arizona and Lebowski can make a movie like No Country for Old Men.

Fargo is still hands down my favorite....Big Lebowski, Blood Simple, and No Country for Old Men are all very close.

I think the original hookup at the bar in the beginning was Fargo, wasn't it?

Yeah -- the Coens joked that naming a movie "Brainerd" (sp?) didn't sound like a good idea.

Dorothy Wood

I went to a Kmart in Brainerd once. it was hilarious. sucks that you can't really type out a northern accent.

Raising Arizona is a great movie. it's just great. loved it when I was a kid, still love it. Big Lebowski is pretty good, but it's kind of over-quoted these days. Fargo rules.

Blood Simple was pretty scary and interesting.

O' Brother sucked. it was too cartoony for me, and not in a good way. I did like the music though.

I can't remember much at all about The Man Who Wasn't There...but I remember liking it alright when I saw it.

Haven't seen their others. probably should.

MC Moot
01-25-2008, 12:26 PM
"Our Brother" is nothing short of brilliant...if you didn't like you just don't know from apple to orange...so much symbolism....like Homer said if you have to ask you'll never know...

O Brother doesn't quite work for me. Parts of it are kind of mean-spirited (the horse-eating redneck, the Cyclops stuff); the picaresque
structure drains almost any tension from the story, the Ku Klux Klan sequence doesn't work, etc.

I love the way the music was used, and the climax is faaaaaaaaantastic, Clooney and Nelson are outstanding, but it work for me.

5.5/10

5.5/10

7.9/10 for me...I agree with the mean spirit observation...those cows were innocent!...you know the SPCA investigated them over that scene?...thought it may be real...Goodmans ass kicking scene is a personal fave....the Robert Johnson character is great...the flood sequence is fantastic...the homeage to the "Cool Hand Luke" prison warden stereotype is trick...oh and when Clooney gets a taste of the old fashioned pugilist style is priceless....the Dillinger tribute....great stuff....(y)

Cows! I hate cows worse than coppers!

I remember that. I think they said they had to wind up showing them the computer construct so they'd believe it was animated.

Yeah, that was a very convincing moment.

Deakins did a great job, too.
