...there's no legend on these sites or in my paper, so I can't figure out:
What's the difference between "rain," "rain showers," "showers," and "storms"?
"Thunderstorms" I think I understand.

It's pretty simple
- a shower is a brief period of precipitation
- a storm suggests severe weather phenomena; they are usually found along 'fronts' which are the boundaries of cold air and warm air intermixing and creating a disturbance of the atmosphere. The fronts are rapidly propelled by the jet stream which form primarily along the passages created between high pressure and low pressure air masses- which is why we have wind (air going from high pressure to low pressure)
rain is just the type of precipitation, and that is why you can have snow showers too.
found this on wikipedia for you:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain#Classifying_the_amount_of_rain
* very light rain — when the precipitation rate is < 0.25 mm/hour
* light rain — when the precipitation rate is between 0.25 mm/hour - 1.0 mm/hour
* moderate rain — when the precipitation rate is between 1.0 mm/hour - 4.0 mm/hour
* heavy rain — when the precipitation rate is between 4.0 mm/hour - 16.0 mm/hour
* very heavy rain — when the precipitation rate is between 16.0 mm/hour - 50 mm/hour
* extreme rain — when the precipitation rate is > 50.0 mm/hour
