View Full Version : I lost my job
:(
The company couldn't afford to keep me on. Changing their business strategy. How am I going to pay my rent through next September?
(n)
any type of severance?
you got friends and/or family around that you can stay with til you get your shit together again?
Can you get a roommate?
No severance, it's such a small company - run by one guy. I live in a one bedroom with a lease that goes till the end of the year. I can live here for approx. 2 or 3 months on my savings.

Sorry to hear that Waus. Don't fret, it'll be ok. I don't know your age or what you did, but quite often, hitting the reset button helps in the long run. Good luck, and go get'em!!!

Can't you collect unemployment for the time being? Look into that for sure.

2 to 3 months is a decent amount of time to try and find something. and if worse comes to worse you can get something that you don't like but will pay the bills and keep on looking for something you do like. As a last resort of course.
I feel for ya, we are going through the same shit at my house. Its not fun.
Take a few days off, try not to worry too much and then assess the situation with a relaxed frame of mind.
Good luck (y)

you're a good looking boy, waus. i'm positive there are certain... things.. you can do to make money. ;););)
in all seriousness, sorry bro. hope things work out.
Thanks guys. I decided there was no use in sitting around feeling sorry for myself, so I went out to apply to some part-time stuff until I find a new job. Looks like I might get some work at an internet cafe for a little while. (y)

freakin sucks. My company is doing cutbacks as well so everyone's gotta walk on eggshells cause they will be picky.
They've already let one of my coworkers go but, he kind of deserves it cause he comes in wasted and half the time he doesn't even show up.
As Dandy said, unemployment is one thing to do. Good luck with a new job, I'm sure you can find a good one.

I feel your pain.
My boss gave me a nice fatty xmas bonus then had a meeting and told us all she sold the company and then told us that the only way we could stay was if the other marketing / PR gal and myself were to get our real estate license. Um, no.
I was secure for the month of January but Thursday is my last day here, so ya know, lets grab some drinks man. I got nothing but time. ;)
I have been interviewing all month, but nothing promising and I dont want to settle and be in this situation again. I plan to hit up unemployment on my way home Thursday....
do look into getting unemployment insurance. you may or may not be eligible (we've been covering this in my employment law class, oddly enough), the system really likes to fuck people who don't make much money or who work part time, but it's worth checking into, if you know how to do that.
of course if you find a good job, you could just take that. but if it's part-time and would pay less than you'd make on UI...well, just don't tell the unemployment office that you turned that down is all i can say. that sounds lame and i suppose it is, but fuck, you have rent to pay

Yeah...that seems like a good idea. The guy from the internet cafe is calling back tomorrow.
I don't know the first thing about unemployment...what parameters does your job have to meet to make you qualified? Eh screw it, these are questions for google not BBMB. Thanks again for the advice.
i actually don't mind trying to answer your question because we literally went over this in class today, so it gives me a chance to see if i remember
it varies from state to state, but it goes like this (this isn't legal advice and it also isn't very helpful because i'm not going to look up your state's rules anyway):
1) you have to have been employed by an employer. you said you worked for a small company; it wasn't a non-profit organization with less than 4 employees, was it? because if it was it might be excluded. most employers aren't excluded though. as long as you weren't self-employed or an independent contractor, you should be ok
2) you must have earned a certain amount of money over a certain period of time; this is where it varies from state to state but there's a base period, where if you didn't make a certain amount of money (or maybe worked a certain amount of hours but for most states it's a monetary thing, not a time thing), you aren't eligible. that's the hardest one for me to understand, because it seems to fuck over the people that need the money the most. there was a court case that sort of liberally interpreted the base period thing so that it would be more favorable to the employee, but congress promptly passed a statute that overruled the case basically, so apparently they really want to keep it this way
3) then there's a bunch of other requirements too, like, it can't be your fault that you got fired, you can't have voluntarily quit, sometimes you can't have received a severance package (which you said you didn't, so, hooray i guess!), you have to be actively seeking a job, you can't have turned down a job that would be a suitable equivalent, that kind of thing
but the main thing that could weed you out would be the monetary requirement. i couldn't tell you what yours is, but you said you'd look it up yourself, i'm basically just showing off right now so i'll shut up
you live in california or something, right? my uneducated guess is that california has an employee-friendly system, so hopefully you'll be fine
Chicago, but close. I don't think it was my fault I got fired, things seemed to be going okay. I also got my first quarterly review on the same day though, so it's hard not to have mixed feelings.
I dunno, I worked there for something like 5 months - which would hopefully be enough time. I'd be less worried if I could get out of my lease more easily. I'll check up on the unemployment thing tomorrow.
Thanks Bob! :)

Yeah dude. I know, I thought about figuring out where that frame shop was just out of curiosity, but I thought it might seem creepy. It'd be weird explaining to my gf I was going to meet a girl I kind of knew through the internet etc.

where's that internet cafe? there's like two down the street from my work. it'd be weird if one of them was it.
I live in Oak Park. It's right by the Lake Street Theater. The guy said he'd call me before the end of the week to figure out work.

unemployment is far too much paperwork for not much. here you only get 40 or 50% of your previous wages.
worker's comp. is way better cause you get like 80%. you shoulda pulled your back muscle on your last day!

I was on UC for a couple of weeks back in March when I lost my yob. I believe there's a cap of around $550 every two weeks. My brother-in-law is a union construction worker. He works different jobs for a couple of weeks, and when the job is over, he collects UC until the next job comes around. He does really well too. He does "Side Jobs" on his off time too, to suplement the Unemployment checks.
They take your last 5 quarters you worked (a year and three months). Which ever quarter you earned the most money is the quarter they use to determine how much you will recieve in UC.
When you fill out the application, they will ask you why you lost your job.
You were laid off, so you're definetley eligable for it. They'll contact your previous employer and they'll confirm the reason for termination. As soon as they get that confirmation, you'll begin recieving benefits retroactive to the date you filed.
Also, don't wait too long to file or they'll want to know how you were supporting yourself without UC.
Hey man, you paid into Unemployment compensation when you were working in case this situation happened, don't be too proud to file for it, it's your money!
