View Full Version : Throw something away and now you kinda regret it?

I threw something away that I'd never thought I'd regret.
but now I kinda do.
when I was 12 or so I started saving pages or articles from magazines like Seventeen, and Cosmo, Vouge, entertainment weekly, etc. I kept the pages with fashion or hairstyles or make-up that I liked. I kept articles on actors and actresses I adored. There were article's on boys, astrology and how to treat acne too. all of this was housed in a big accordion folder and i even had a name for it: The Style Files.
The Style Files came in handy during my teen years when getting ready for the Prom and stuff like that. Even as I got in to college I'd occasionally still make a contribution to the style file.
But last year I threw it out. I was doing some spring cleaning, I'd probably just watched Clean House on the style network and I wanted to get rid of a lot of my shit. I figured I was too old to keep the style files and I didn't know anyone who would want it.
But I was thinking that.....that was over 18 years of collected materials that pretty much coverd fashion and entertainment for over a decade! that's not really replaceable.
Then I was also thinking my friend's tween age daughters probably would have enjoyed it since they are getting into make-up and all that. Then again perhaps they would have laughed looking back on the late 80's early 90's styles.:o
so right. anyway. what did you throw out that you now regret?

Over a decade's worth of Creem Magazine as well as a bunch of more obscure music magazines. I had tons of room at my parents' house but my mom wasn't going to store all my stuff forever. I'm lucky I kept most of my vinyl.

All my old band tapes. I should've saved them.
I'm sure there are quite a few that's-it-I'm-done-smoking half-packs of cigarettes as well. :D
I have no scrapbooks or anything, though I'm not sure if I regret that or not.

Cookie - i had a style file too! When i left home to go to uni though my mum had a complete blitz on my bedroom (without telling me) and threw it away. Along with my old school books, all backed with *insert cheesy boyband name here* posters and scrawlings of 'Katy Luvs *random boys name* 4 eva'
I was heartbroken :o
I also had a massive collection of Empire Magazine - right from no. 1 - and that got thrown away during a strop when i had moved house for the trillionth time and was sick of finding somewhere to store them all. I regretted it from the moment the bin was emptied into the dustbin lorry...

i got into music at very early age and i bought my first records when i was 5 or 6, i bought two - "heart of glass" by blondie and "milk and alcohol" by dr feelgood.
"milk and alcohol" had a picture of the grim reaper on the back of the sleeve and it scared me so much and gave me nightmares that instead of just chucking the sleeve away i gave the whole thing to an older lad 3 doors down.
I couldnt even tape it or anything as we didnt have that technology at the time in our house.
I know i was very young but I always regretted that.
Stupid.

Oh yeah -- I threw away a really nice herringbone overcoat when I moved to California. I assumed I'd never get cold in California.

In the mid 90's when I was feeling intolerably cool I weened out my CD collection semi-based on what I thought was cool/hip to be known to own..more so to look at as opposed to listening..so I pawned tons of "classic" rawk, punk, heavy metal...you know like I'd trade in 50 CD's for 15 bucks....and just be glad to have them out of sight....silly stoopid vanity...

I had about 3 years worth of copies of The Face magazine which I got rid of in a mad frenzy and regret wildly now.:(

why are some people uspet about throwing magazines away? Is this a female thing? My wife has millions of magazines upsatairs that i dont even think she has read but she will not part with - she says she might need them? For what?
Its not like things like the face from 1994 or whatever will be relevant now - i dont get it - explain why chucking out old magazines is an issue please?

my mom gave all my teenage mutant ninja turtle action figures away a while back and i was really sad about that one
at least they went to a relative though, so its not like she just chucked em or something

I suppose it's precisely because it's not 'relevant' it becomes interesting.

I had every issue of Thrasher Magazine up to like 95. I brought all of them with me while moving from place to place. One day I said F it, and threw'em all out. They were just stacked too high and really ratty. Looking back, I probably should have kept them. I still have a like 20 from the late 80s, and they're mint, but I wish I had all of'em.
I'm pretty good at keeping stuff though. I'm a collector of sorts, and old toys have always been tops. HotWheels are my specialty, and I've got a few.......thousand.

...a small piece of metal that was stuck in the tread of my trainers.
Turns out months later to have been a "woodruff key", which held the gearshaft of my (stripped down) motorcycle together! I had to buy a second hand engine and split it just to get another one. God that sucked :o

so does that mean that you would buy a magazine and then not read it for 8 months to make it more interesting?

you may have a point and i would like to take you on in the nothing debate which could go on forever but its already hurting my head and i have to go and play badminton in a minute AND this still doesnt answer my original questions about hangovers and being a bit dramatic

Ok.
TAL now kinda regrets making a throw away comment about his life as he has now had to answer (actually, not answer) questions from an annoying northern git.:p

No, not at all. But The Face was particularly 'zeitgeisty' (urgh!) and so looking back now on what had been deemed 'the next big thing' then would have been interesting. Plus, it was always packed with amazing photography, fashion and articles. I wouldn't keep a copy of Heat for any of those reasons.

No.
Thats a nothing answer.
Trailerprincess - Fair do's.
Although this thread has inspired me to chuck out (or at least threaten to) a load of my wife's magazines that she hasnt even opened from like 3 years ago.
The word "no" has two letters in it, so it's something.
It's also a word, and words are something.

I used to have loads of my brother's old loaded magazines from the mid-90's. loaded in the mid-90's was awesome, about 3 times the size it is now and it featured actual sexy women instead of balloon-chested rent-a-bimbos like they do nowadays. I'd rather read an interview with Angelina Jolie and see pictures of her handcuffed to a bed than read the tedious thoughts of some slag from Oldham who's married to a footballer.

Still got mine: at my Parents house. And the Star Wars figures and the G.I. Joes that were worth a damn
I'm a bit of a pack rat: Did you ever see that Amazing Stories w/ Alex Keaton who saved all his old toys? And they ended up worth $ :Well that's kinda like me but I sold my comics long ago and could care less about going back to the US even if a fortune was proposed.
