I am nearly done with The Fellowship of The Ring, then will read the other 2 after that.

The films I now relalise have changed lots of things that happened or didn't happen but that's how impossible it would be to jam in everything into 9 plus hours. It's taken me years to get around to read these at last and I'm fucking glad I am now.

If there is an afterlife I bet Tolkein can't wait to give Jackson a slap

no - after seeing fellowship of the ring i wanted to know what happened next so i went and borrowed the two towers off my brother.

well after 2 pages of small print and blah blah from blah blah walked to blah blah and then he spoke to blah blah blah from blah blah and they continued on to blah together.

i use the word blah - because half of the names/places sounded the same.

since i was reading this in 10 minute bursts (train), i was bored and couldn't follow what was going on.

ya think? my brother grew up living and breathing these books (and talking tapes) and most of my guy friends were big fans too, and they love the movies, despite the differences.

I started reading them after seeing the first film and thought they were ace. Yeah stuff in the film is different like err..the end but if Jackson had totally recopied the books we would still be watching the films - there would need to be about 8 films

Same here, yet I still cannot forget the horror that is the Silmarillion.

I think I read the Hobbit once. But I try and read the full Lord of the Rings about once every couple of years.

Last night I dreamt I was writing a book about Orc's and Goblins and such.

I think I was Tolkein in my sleep.

i read that once, and i pretended to like it at the time but yeah that was pretty hard to get through. it was like the bible, if the bible were about elves

i've never finished the lord of the rings though. i've read the hobbit and about half of the fellowship of the ring, but that's all

To be honest - i have no problem with where the film ends as opposed to where the book ends - although the books ending makes more sense - i thought the film ending was fine - i got over the whole saruman thing easily enough because the film is a pretty accurate description of whats in your head from the book.

I've read it quite a few times over the years, the first time when I was in my early teens. My parents gave a copy of The Hobbit when I was pretty young, 10 or 11 I think. I was way ahead in literacy in those days, although I came back to the pack when I discovered pot 5 years later.

I dig the films, too. The changes that Jackson made were necessary to convert the books to film otherwise it would have been a right mess. Although, using Gimli, Merry and Pippin as comic relief annoyed me a little.

I got about halfway through Fellowship when I was a teenager and gave up on it.

Really liked The Hobbit, though. (y)

i read the hobbit and was really into it one summer when i was in middle school or so. the following summer my uncle lent me his old copies of the trilogy and i started but never seemed to get into it. i thought it was good, but just i just couldnt get myself to actually read.

i'll get to them soon enough though. its good stuff for sure

Like TAL I read them in my youth..they had a great impact on me....especially living amongst misty mountains....the lament for nature, different races, history's and attributes...it was wicked....although it probably caused me to go on to read more fantasy than life warrants...like I spun off into Terry Brooks,Dragonlance etc....and I always believed Sam to be homosexually crushed on Frodo I think it's readily apparent beyond the bond of loyal squire....everyone should read them at about 15yrs of age before seeing the films...yep

I've read them and re-read them all regularly, and yeah Jackson changed a lot,
sometimes changing or adding things that seemed wholly unnecessary, if not
just random (i.e. Aragorn falling to his "death" in two towers).

Still, I am a fan of the movies and think there is a lot to be said for the
way Jackson captured the spirit and intensity of the books, most other directors
could never have pulled the entire trilogy off as effectively as he did.

I read them once as a child, once as a teen, and again a few years ago when all the hype was building around the movies. They really are enthralling literature and a joy to read, although not as complex or intense as other books I've read.

The movies are nice to look at but they completely fuck with the story, sometimes in a way that totally reverses its basic themes and plot, and truth be told the acting and dialogue (when not lifted directly from the novels) are nothing special. I'll definitely read the books again before I die, but damned if I'll watch those movies again.

i've seen all three movies (at school), but i've only read the hobbit (for school) and 10-20 pages of the fellowship of the ring.

I'm sure you'd love it, if, instead of wandering through Middle Earth, the Fellowship would be imprisoned in a container. :D
