Beastie Boys' Yauch Launches Film Company

(FROM VARIETY) – Adam Yauch, also known as MCA of the Beastie Boys, is launching Oscilloscope Pictures, a New York-based full-service
film distribution company. Yauch previously directed and produced the Beastie Boys concert film Awesome; I F----n' Shot That!, which
featured a performance at Madison Square Garden and was distributed by ThinkFilm in 2006. He is teaming with David Fenkel, a former
executive for ThinkFilm, for the new company. ''We're not looking to throw big MGs at films, we're looking to partner with filmmakers
and put smart money into P&A so that we can really share with the backend with the filmmakers and we're in the same boat together,''
Yauch was quoted in Variety as saying. Yauch added that the company will employ grassroots and nontraditional methods to spread
the word about their films. (Variety)

It probably doesn't signify the end of the Boys as something for Yaunch to focus on. Hopefully, anyway. If the first DVD release is the Gala film, then it's obviously just a way of cutting out the middleman for the band's stuff and maybe picking up some interesting projects by the by.

It would be nice if the fan community got a news release, though. They only seem really interested in the press as an audience. Worries me about how they're going to pull off all this marketing whizzbangery when they're so shit at PR.

Just a little something something like "Hey I'm starting a distributorship LOL. Should be good irl, but I'm still a Beastie Boy afaik and we'll have another album out in 2009. The ex-ThinkFilm guys are the ones doing the real work, anyways tbh".

i was kinda thinkin something along those lines. i hope that this isnt something to take them away from the music, or just a big money/resource drain... especially with how the industry is changing. all these albums coming out in such rapid fire seems like a way of fulfilling the old record contract. are they saving some awesomeness for when they decide to put out their own stuff?

Yeah I mean I don't know how the ins and outs (in out fnar) work, but if they do well enough out of this venture (the whole o-scope venture, I mean) they could finally release that album comprised entirely of unreleased material on their own label mayhaps. Who knows if they'd retain ownership and publishing rights post-Capitol? I'd think maybe, if they learned from the Def Jam situation.
