Of this generation? If he was, would it be entirely deserved? Dude's pretty prolific, but sort of inaccessible. Anyway, I'm interested in your thoughts.

i find him incredibly annoying. can't really tell if people think he's good because he's actually good or if they think he's so great just because he's so "different".

i can't stand the white stripes but i liked the raconteurs

I do think he's one of the greats and most certainly deserves it.

Forget about The White Stripes and The Raconteurs. The fact that he made an awesome album with Loretta Lynn should be more than enough to cement his legend status. (y)

i think he is light years ahead of ALL current rock acts. right there it puts him in the category of greats. where he is on the list of all time greats is entirely debatable.

if being considered "great" is basically just emulating shit that was done 40+ years ago, then yes Jack White is great. Otherwise no he produces simplistic repetitive pretentious bullshit.

I hear that, but by the same token, he's prolific as fuck. And his strike-rate is high. He makes very little in the way of complete shit. I mean, anybody with a guitar could be emulating somebody else with a guitar.

agreed.

I think he puts a spin on it thats pretty creative. That said, I think I could probably put all of the White Stripes songs I like on one album.

He can make great noises. He's probably easily already in my top thirty guitarists.

He's got genuine vision, writes terrific songs, isn't afraid to be silly, isn't afraid to be pretentious or oblique (and can pull it off), and even his
angry stuff doesn't come off as mean-spirited.

A-.

I think he'll be remembered less as a singer/songwriter and more as a guitarist. A great one. just listen to catch hell blues. fuck. sounds like in my time of dying by zeppelin.

being prolific doesn't make you one of the greats. if he doesn't do something more impressive, he'll just be remembered as a tool who wore stupid clothes and went out with renee zellweger.

no one else is doing anything that sounds good in rock today. when people look back at the 00's they're going to need to say someone was the cream of the crop. and i dont really feel anyone is even close to fitting that bill, but jack.

I think if Tweedy gets his Wilco shit back together they might have a legacy.

I think he's been in this real transitional phase for about two or three albums now, but it's been interesting.

In the mid-to-late fifties and early sixties Top 40 radio was instrumental in getting Rock N Roll music out of the clubs and into the ear's of young people nation-wide. Today we have many outlets that come together to serve this purpose, and while Top 40 radio has by no means stopped being a relevant force in deciding what people listen to and when, the burden of spreading the word concerning new music has been in large part taken off the shoulders of Top 40 radio.

Try looking elsewhere, you filthy little git.

i can't be concerned to mess about with searching for rock acts. i find so many of them just pure shit these days i just dont bother. i stick to the 60s/70s for my rock. (minus harder stuff like rage)

yes but is rock going to be the genre of the 00s that people are going to talk about in times to come? cos i dont think rock has offered a lot in the 00s. the prolific people that are going to be talked about electronic music producers, rnb, etc.
