I was up late a few weeks ago flipping through the chaneels and caught the last 20 minutes of the 1980's release of Flash Gordon on the Retro Channel. It may have been the 10 beers, but I was taken back and fell in love again.

I remember as an 8 year old, I was one of two people who had a VCR on our street and Flash Gordon was one of the few movies we owned, and every day during a summer around 1980, we watched Flash Gordon. Often we would rewind and watch it again. Now that I think about it, The Black Hole, by walt Disney was another we would rotate with. If you remember, you had to rewind the VCR tape to watch it again.

Anyway, back to the present, It was my night for books and bedtime stories with my 4 year old, so I told her the story of Flash Gorden and King Ming. For days, my girl continued to ask about Flash Gordon and what do you know, I found the DVD and brought it home.

After Movie Night with the wife and Kid, my wife thought I was insane for showing the movie to our girl and hid the video after our girl begged to take the DVD box to school for show and tell. Last night I offered Hanna Montana or Flash and Flash was the winner.

I was just hoping that a Beastie Boys fan might appriciate the classic 1980's release, or am I insane as my wife has suggested?

I watched it last week. I fell asleep right after the first fight scene. And then when I woke up the next day and turned on the tv it picked up right where I left off so I had to watch the whole thing. I still loved it...bad acting and all.

one of the greatest sci fi cheese movies ever, and hands down in the top three soundtracks of all time with SGT. Pepper's Lonley Hearts Club Band, and the original Blues Brothers.

I once had to draw on a piece of clothing for a project in college and I decided to choose a helmet. My professor loved it and said it reminded him of the "bird dudes" in the movie. I'm going to have to watch it now for that reason and to experience the cheesiness of it as the last time I've seen it was probably around 1984 and I was a baby back then.

My wife has hidden the video now for 5 days. I am about to go buy a second copy just to teach my wife not to....

She is saying that my girl is going to grow up as some kind of sci-fi geek if I subject her to 1980 shit like this. I am not sure if that is bad or not. I do know my girl asked for the video again today.

Oh well, I will get it back, I went 10+ years without seeing it again, I gues I can hold out a few more days.

Glad to hear I am not the only fan.

You can't have a name like the Abbott and have your wife telling you what you're allowed to, and not allowed to watch.

RE: Brian Blessed … I was told that he was the inspiration for the movie Highlander. Allegedly, when he said … “Who wants to live forever?” It was the birth of the idea. I am not sure if its true but that is what I heard.

Also, when I asked my 4 year old which was her favorite part of the movie: #1 the football game scene, #2 when the bird man says: “Dive”

Brian blessed is the man!!!

quality - it makes me feel old tho - i was 7 when i went to see that at the ABC cinema which became Mr Smiths. Not that means anything to anyone outside the northwest of england.
Anyhoo - all the best bits have been mentioned but its the fucking nuts - it was on at christmas
Ming The Merciless is still the best name for a villain ever

That soundtrack was one of the first things I found when I started scratching/DJing cause I didn't know about DJ break records and whatnot and it had a lot of sounds and dialog. So much classic stuff on there.

Here's the classic one
