I'd have to say I'm pretty impressed with the opening to Caddyshack. The sun rising, Kenny Logins soft chorus with a bit of electronics opening then to the sprinklers poping up in time to the added percussion of the song, then straight into Kenny's rock and the golf course being open for business. A very bold and strong statement in cinema that is often overlooked.

I like the opening to Raising Arizona. You get this whole prologue/story going and, about seventeen minutes in, the opening credits come on --
which you've probably forgotten because you're so engrossed -- and it restarts the movie.

I'd have to go with:

Saving Private Ryan
2001
Reservoir Dogs
Romeo is Bleeding

I still have to fight with you about Kundun, Moot. I really don't know what you see in it.

Creative re-location,costume/wardrobe,historical vantage/narative,sound score...plus it was an absolute departure for Scosese...a beautiful film...(y)

Indian border guard: Are you the Lord Buddha?

Dalai Lama: I believe I am a reflection, like the moon on water. When you see me, and I try to be a good man, you see yourself.

Scorsese is permanently banned from entering Tibet and China due to it...goddamn worth it...(y)

It seemed really passionless to me, and pretty rote. I liked the sand paintings a lot, but it's maybe the one Scorsese movie that, if he
hadn't signed it, I wouldn't have known he directed it.

I don't know about passionless,I might say reserved to match the culture it depicts...but if the scenes with the Lama meeting Mao didn't make your rise right out of your mofo seat, check your pulse you may be dead...

"Religion is poison.."

For just a second, it raised my hackles, but... naw... it was too poorly acted to take seriously. The guy playing Mao was especially bad, and
the way it was written... they did everything but give him a moustache to twirl.

Most James Bond films have awesome pre-titles scenes. GoldenEye is a pretty sick one.

And who could forget the seminal opening to Goodfellas, my favourite movie of all time; "As far back as I can remember I've always wanted to be a gangster..."
*Tony Bennett, cool editing*

The Godfather
Miller's Crossing

Star Wars: Hell -- the first time I saw that and the camera panned down to the planet, then the roar and the ship overhead, then
the roar and the HUGER ship overhead, I was blown away.

Man, Tom Cruise held that movie together like glue. (y)

yeah, the opening song IKO IKO plays at the start

probably the only Tom Cruise movie that I like because Dustin Hoffman is in it who is one of THE greatest actors ever

I like Hoffman in a lot of stuff, but I think he would've flown off the screen with Cruise there. Kind of like Nicholson needing Shelly Duvall
in The Shining. At first, it seems like it's the other way around, but then you realize that if they (Criise, Duvall) didn't so fiercely believe
the other actor's performance, it wouldn't have worked at all.

Good movie, good movie.

Why Hoffman didn't get best actor for Tootsie is beyond me.

# My Favorite Year (1982) - Peter O'Toole (I)

I agree with Raising Arizona. Also, Boogie Nights. Sets the pace for the rest of the movie with a nice whirlwind of a tracking shot.
