View Full Version : Stopped-up ears

I can't find any help for this other than "wait."

I had a pretty nasty cold a couple weeks ago, and after a couple of days of that, I woke up one morning and something in my right
ear went "pop," and suddenly it was like my right ear was underwater -- all stopped up, and ringing.

Oh shit -- what did I do? I wondered. Perforated drum?

So I let some peroxide bubble in there and cleaned it out and whatnot. No luck.

Next day I woke up, and now BOTH ears were like this -- plugged and ringing.

And now it's been about eleven days and my hearing is seriously dampened. But I can't figure out how to make it go away.

Any tips?

The only thing I've really found on the net says if it's still like this after a month, see the doctor.

This happened to my left ear recently. It felt clogged up inside, and my hearing was slightly impaired. My mom helped me out and put oil on a cotton ball, then told me to place it inside my ear. While it did help, after a day or so, when I took it out, the clogged up feeling was still there. Anyway, over time, it went away. I think it just had to do with the weather, and I'm sure it's the same case with your clogged up ears. Give it time.

It's never happened to me before.

What type of oil?

My co-worker asked me to turn down the music. I turned it down to where he was cool with it, but then I really couldn't hear it anymore.

Yeah,I had a nasty ear-infection a couple years back that left me with a similar dilemna…I actually lost about 80% hearing between both ears…likely caused by swimming…it left me with a new found appreciation foer what it may be like be hard of hearing…I missed a Heavy Trash show cause of it as well…...I went to a specialist who prescribed anti-biotics and then had to eventually even prescribe a stronger form…I was so desperate I was pushing him to cut me and insert drainage tubes…but he told me to be patient…then one night there was this big “whoosh” of air a little pop of pain some nasty fluid…but when I woke up my hearing was back!...took an additional week to clear completley…so,yeah…patience and avoid the pool…(y)

I think it was just regular old olive oil or something. I wasn't sure what my mom used. Do you clean your ears with q-tips often? If so, have you ever pushed it in far enough to where you hit your ear drums? These /may/ have contributed to your clogged-up, ringing ears, however I'm not a doctor. Speaking of which, it's sound advice to wait about a month, then go to see a doctor if the irritation of your ears persists.

At that time, I seriously was pondering if the reason for my clogged-up ears was because I damaged my hearing from listening to music /all the time/. I used to bring my iPod to work every day and would listen to it as much as I was permitted to, volume at full blast. And, of course, at home it's no different. My speakers are normally blasting from my computer playing music. I have to have music playing at all times. My hearing is probably impaired to some extent, anyway. :P But thankfully, not to the point of barely being able to hear.

I use Q-tips, but I don't go far into the canal.

I don't get a lot of ear wax usually.

Haven't been swimming.

The world needs better ear jokes.

I'm waiting for the "whoosh," Moot. (y)

oh and hey, you're just coming off a cold yeah?...could be a very good chance that your sinuses have drained down into the canal...so do watch for the possibilty of infection...

I had a serious snot/mucus factory going. Got to the point where there would be blood in both.

Not recommended.

I always see old people going into walk-in clinics just to get their ear wax cleaned out.

I would hate to be a GP. uaskfhaskjhfja.

you shoulda gone to the doctor a couple days ago a-z. dont fuck with an ear infection

my right ear is bothering me the last two days, but im positive its because my wisdom teeth on that side are acting up. im swollen all over on that side of my face.
I dont have any time to go to see the dentist/get them out until may though.
feeeeeeeck.

But if I had an ear infection, wouldn't the peroxide fizz like crazy? Wouldn't some substance come out of my ear when I cleaned it? There's
nothing there like that.

Ive had such a bad ear infection (that started out in the sinuses) that I could ever turn my head for a couple of days because of the pain. and I couldnt even lay down to sleep because of the chance that Id roll over to either side and awake to the pain this caused.

That sounds bad. I hate it when my sleep gets fucked with.

I get that kind of thing every once in awhile. The first time it happened I was pretty worried about it, but now
i'm fairly convinced it has something to do with the weather and maybe being kinda stopped up.

It's strange that it has never happened to you before though.

ear candling is not a bad option, really. you can find some massage therapists that do it. i've never had it done before, bu ti learned how to do it in massage school. it's worth a try. harmless and not really expensive.

My mom would use olive oil ('cause we were poor) and it worked WONDERS. She'd warm it up first, too. Ah.. :o

i just got my ears cleaned out at the doctors on tuesday, and it was a really nice feeling afterwards. granted, my ears are very waxy, but when they get out that impacted stuff on the inside of your ear, its so great.

That's pretty much what the Wikipedia article said.

It's odd, then, that those special candles are treated like medical supplies in the states.

Wait a second -- are you saying you kept the cotton ball in for a day or so?

i often have to worry about balls of wax tumbling out of my ears in falling into my food

i don't know why my ears have to be so gad damn waxy

and they get incredibly itchy during the winter

Erm... maybe half a day? I put it on at night, then had it on for about half the day the next day. I don't know if it had any effect on my ear, but I was getting desperate at that point. :P

Edit: i often have to worry about balls of wax tumbling out of my ears in falling into my food

I would laugh if I saw that.

They're all connected. Leave it for much longer and it will become a nose and throat infection too. Go to zee doc!

is there any pain? was the sickness you had a virus?

I think you probably just need to wait. It's probably just drainage from your cold if it was a virus.

I've never had an ear infection and I'm not prone to infections (*knocks on wood*) and this plugged up feeling has happened to me before during and after a cold. I would do a nasal spray or neti pot to clear out your sinuses and get stuff moving.

now can someone tell me why there's a shooting pain in the right side of my neck going up to my jaw and behind my ear?

have you hurt your back recently? possibly a pinched nerve.

Yoga and other regular exercise should help. Maybe go see a chiro or physio.

wisdom teeth?

OOH. That could be it!

My ears/glands have been bugging me for months now, and when I finally went to the dentist they said my wisdom teeth need to come out.
