Campaigners are calling for a bear who fought in the Second World War to have a memorial at Holyrood Palace. Voytek was found by Polish troops in Iran in 1943, and adopted as a mascot. When the Poles were deployed to Italy, they officially enlisted the bear so that he could go with them. A gentle giant who marched on two legs, Voytek carried food and ammunition in the Battle of Monte Cassino before being billeted with his comrades in the Scottish Borders. Fond, like any soldier, of a beer and a fag, he dies in Edinburgh Zoo in 1963, aged 22.
