So I know I'm going to get slammed for this but are there any other fans of current progressive bands on the BBMB?

Oceansize
Porcupine Tree
Muse

I really like Oceansize, I think of the three they have the best balance of being creative and progressive without sounding bloated or pretentious. I haven't heard their new one, Frames, because its only been released in the U.K. It might be available on iTunes. To be honest, I haven't checked.

I like the new Fiery Furnaces album a lot

that's all over the shop in a proggy sort of way I suppose

I guess there isn't a great word for it. The three bands I mentioned tend to do longer songs with lots of parts and don't use the typical verse chorus verse structure. There are a lot of instrumental parts.

Not prog rock in the sense of Rush, Yes, and early Genesis, it’s a more current version of that, I guess.

Spiritualized, huh?

Artistdirect.com lists them in some pretty eclectic company:

Radiohead, The Flaming Lips, My Bloody Valentine, The Stooges, Stereolab, the Verve, and Miles Davis.

I'll consider that a good sign. What album do you like the best?

I guess the Mars Volta would probably fit in this category too.

psychic ills
the church

i wouldn't categorize the stooges into any of these genres though.

dead meadow is very good, despite their name.
most of the other names in that big list i'm either not familiar with or don't care too much for.

edit: i dont think dead meadow is really a prog rock band, if thats what this thread is about

I guess the lines are pretty thin on some of the genres, but I've noticed that I really do dislike prog but I love psychedelic,
thus (y) BJM, Spriritualized, Verve, Coil, MBV, Primal Scream, TSOOL, Warlocks,
Black Ryder, Black Angels, Blackstrap, Dead Meadow, The People's Revolutionary Choir
and (n) Mars Volta, Muse, Porcupine Tree, Dungen, Träd Gräs och Stenar, November.
My friend's daughter went to see Mars Volta the other day and while we were waiting for her after the gig
I could hear more than half an hour of their gig and I was oh so glad I wasn't inside the venue!
Saw Black Mountain on Conan last night and they reminded me sooo much of Jefferson Airplane
so I didn't quite know which category to put them. Gotta give them further listen...

ELP covered that tune, it's originally written by Aaron Copland.

The Stones have been opening their shows to that piece for years (y)
