Let's talk about a controversial issue!

What do YOU think of Nas' choice of title for his next album?

Is he really doing it for a noble cause and to help strengthen racial equality or is he pulling a big focus-group planned publicity stunt?

Post your thoughts!

Personally I think it's another stunt like "Hip Hop Is Dead..." but I'm going to hold out to hear the content before I completely condemn Nas like the cynical prick that I am.

you just wanted to get away with saying "Nigger" thats the point of this thread, isn't it?

And yes it is a publicity stunt and Nas has always been a self-rightous twat when it comes to stuff like this...Jay-Z said it best in that song off Blueprint 2. One of those rappers that you liek to hear flow but rather not hear speak on anything outside of him rapping.

It's a stunt all the way, he wanted to release it this month just so he could ride on the controversy it would create.

I think Nigger is more effective than the original title of "Nigga"

He should have called it "The N Word" because it would have been kind of a clever little double meaning

Stupid name. Should have let the music on the album do the talking instead. Imagine all the chavs asking for it in HMV?

He should've called the album "Remember When I Made Illmatic?"

checkyourprez
02-29-2008, 12:28 PM
What he should have done, is name it "Cracker" or "Honkey" or something really powerful like that.

But I do think it is a gimmick. I think it will have some bangers like all Nas albums do. Because lets be honest, Nas is a good rapper. But I also think it will have a lot of garbage like all Nas albums do. Because lets be honest, Nas sucks ass at picking beats.

it might be a stunt but its a more meaningful stunt than say getting a big guest artist in or the normal type of music industry stunts. at least its tryin to say somethin. I think.
I dont normally comment on this guy cos i know a lot less than some of you but i dont think the album title should be dismissed as a load of bollocks which is the impression i got from reading some of the above posts

Incidentally, I think the better gimmick would have been to do a song with a guest out of left field. Like Amy Winehouse or something. Equally gimmicky but at least entertaining.

He was supposed to be on Back To Black, they scheduled recording time and everything. He didn't show, claiming to be ill or something. That's what Winehouse wrote the song "Mr Jones (Fuckery)" about.

Yeah, cuz I get a real kick out of typing words on my computer...

I wasn't born prejudiced like you fucked up Americans are. To me nigger is just another word, I barely notice skin colour most of the time.

PS
When I went to live in Namibia I had an interesting chat about the matter with a guy I became really good friends with there. Over there "nigger" is not seen as offensive at all, by any use of the word. It only has the positive connotations. The US and Europe needs to get like that.

roosta

To me nigger is just another word

But the fact of the matter is, it isn't just another word. And you have to recognise that and act accordingly.

Your opinion is your opinion, but the word exists in the real world where it has real meaning and real power, so you should be aware of that. Saying that you think so and so about something does not give you carte blanche to act any way you like.

Lex Diamonds
03-09-2008, 04:37 PM
I'm not doing anything I like and I'm not claiming that it doesn't have power in the real world. I'm saying that when I think of the word I don't think of hateful and negative stereotypes like the majority of the western media seem to.

Its not about thinking of 'stereotypes'. Its about a word that offends an awful lot of people.

Lex Diamonds
03-09-2008, 05:16 PM
I know it offends a lot of people, that's a stone cold fact. I'm not in the business of denying facts Mr. roosta so there is no need to be such a regimented pamphlet of them. All I'm saying is I know it is possible to take the power out of the word, and the sooner that happens (which it inevitably will) the better.

Thats the point. A person chooses to be offended by it. Its not right to use and their is no denying the past conotations that the world carries. But to get so gravley offended by a word when you have the power to just brush it off is stupid in my opinion. By not getting offended you now hold the power. I just dont see the point in letting someone enrage you with words.

The word is more of a reflection on the small minded person using it, not the one its being said to. You (i use you in terms of no one specifically) know your not one, and cleary the person saying it is a foolish human. The person using the word is clearly trying to rile up the person hes saying it to. Why give them the pleasure? Its not worth your time.

From Rolling Stone:

And you thought Hip-Hop Is Dead was a provocative title! "This record is a lot more serious than hip-hop," says Nas, who tackles race and American history on his new album. Polow Da Don, Stargate, and Cool and Dre contribute beats to the disc, which includes "Be a Nigga Too" (a play on the Dr Pepper jingle), the Fox News-slamming "Sly Fox," and "This Is Not America," on which he raps about sexism and racism in the U.S. "This album is like talking to your child about sex," says Nas. "It's uncomfortable, but it's important."

I bet you this will be the same oul, same oul. A Nas album let down by mediocre/sub-par beats.

When I heard it was going to use the Dr. Pepper jingle I was worried it would sound poppy and corny like the commercial was, but it's pretty good. It's not Birthday Girl, thank God.
