Okay, let me preface this by saying that this is as much for my personal recollection as trying to entertain you. It's also Beastie Lite, because most of the stuff from the show has been described already. Anyway, here's my lil' trip report. It took a while to type and I'm too lazy to proof it. Sorry about the errors/typos.

Anyway.........

Alright y'all, just got back into Vegas after a whirlwind trip in NYC. I flew out red eye from Vegas Monday night at 9:30 PM. My flight landed in NYC (JFK) at 5:00 AM. Got a bagel and an XL coffee from Dunkin Donuts and I made my way to the Subway and somewhat surprisingly, I made it to Brooklyn without getting lost. I got to IzzyNYC's house at 7:00 AM.

Izzy was gracious enough to host Pooty for his stay in town and offered a place for me to get a brief crash before we set out for the day. Very nice of her, but that's pretty much how Beastie Fam rolls. Pootytang greeted me at the door and we went inside to try to get some sleep. I'm on an apartment floor in Brooklyn, where I've never been before, at someone's house, who I haven't met yet getting ready to see the beastie boys in 12 hours. I love the internet.

Pootytang and I were trying to sleep but were acting like a couple of 12 year old girls at a slumber party. We talked and giggled til damn near 9AM before we passed out til about 11. It was awesome to see my friend again, 6 months after our summer show together in AC.

Izzy emerged and we all took off to meet up with the other peeps from the board. That has been an absolute highlight for me over the last couple of tours. It's been great going to shows and meeting all kinds of new people. Iv'e got a whole new group of friends because of it. Again, J'aime le internetz.

The line was freeeeezing. We were there about 4 hours before the doors opened. It was miserable but still fun because of the good company. I got to meet Laver1969 for the first time in person. Very glad I got to do that. He also hooked me up with a crash spot after the show. Kudos. Paulb and Jennygirl were there too. I've hung out shows with them before. Good peoples. Seth T was also in line for the long haul. Another really nice guy.

Okay, this is taking forever...but we got into the show right around 7pm. I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it, but D-Nice was spinning upon our arrival at the rail. He played some tunes til about 8:30. It was pretty good. I prefer a DJ over a traditional opening act anyway. Moby later explained that he had called him at midnight the night before to ask him if he would play.

The rest is pretty standard with what the other people said as far as the show. I hung out between Izzy and Jenny on the rail, pretty much right in front of Horovitz's mic stand. Root Down is my favorite song, and they've opened with it at 3 shows I've been at including this one. Backing that up with Flute Loop was perfect. Love that joint too.

The FIRST tech diff came right at the end of the first verse of Time for Livin'. Horovitz's guitar cut out right after the first verse and they stopped. He got it back on pretty quick but they decided to just start the song from the top.

Then, as he went into the opening riff of Remote Control it went out again. It seemed like it took FOREVER for them to finally get it sorted out. MMM dropped a few beats, Mike D danced, I guess Yauch just stood there, and Adrock helped the techs try to fix the problem. Money Mark helped too.

Once they got that figured out, they started Remote Control. Mike started singing the wrong verse for verse 2 and they had to stop again. All of this really did kill the energy of the show. It didn't take long for it to pick back up though.

Rhymin' and Stealin' was obviously a highlight. I would love to see a video of myself during that song. I was going both bucknut and apeshit!:) It was cool. The encore was kinda meh. I'm sick of knowing the encore. It sounded good but I wouldn't mind seeing them open a show with Intergalactic sometime. Do something a little less expected.

I'll use this paragraph to do my bitching. The sound in the show was TERRIBLE. I've been in shows were the sound was bad, but it didn't really hurt the show. The sound here did. From the first drop MMM put on in the intro, I was like, "Turn it up!" It was really muffled and crappy. Later, the audio would get louder and quieter, back and forth, during songs. During a lot of songs, it was hard to hear the lyrics too. At first, I was thinking, wow they had to do a sound check. They'll sort it out over the first song or two and it will be fine. No such luck. It blew all night and made it hard for me to get fully into it. I still enjoyed it, but it wasn't as good as other shows I've been too for that reason and because of all the flubs. Also, the setlist lacked imagination. The bboys were having fun though and did shout out the Beastie Fam at the end. I give it a B-.

I talked to someone about the sound later that night and they said they saw Prince there and the sound was money. So who's fault is it? If it was someone from the venue itself, my sincere suggestion is never play/see a show there again. If it was the bboys own sound guy, I'd replace him. It was THAT BAD, imo.

/End rant

After the show, we met and had drinks. That was a lot of fun, even though I was exhausted at that point. I really enjoyed the whole 28 hour experience in NYC. I look forward to seeing you all again and meeting others in the future.

Oh, and MMM dropped sick, grimy ass, hip hop beats on tracks all night long. He was dope.

Their sound crew is sketchy as. Good Vibrations was so up and down, I could hear people chatting during Shake Your Rump and Pass the Mic. I'm a fan, so I can let it pass, but it's mad amateur.

Thanks for the recap. Seems they could still work a bit harder on surprising audiences. For the size of their back catalogue, they've really only flirted with delving right into it. Somebody needs to fire them up for whatever comes to be this next album. Awful comparison, but Metallica right now are playing the hell out of pretty much everything they've ever written, and writing new shit. Of course, that's Rick Rubin's doing.

I was chatting up some people while standing in line who told me the knock on the place was that the sound was horrible. So I went in expecting it, and they were right.
It's funny because I thought the sound at the two summer shows we saw was outstanding. So I'd have to lean to blaming the venue for the poor sound quality.
As for Adrocks guitar giving out, I just saw it as a weird coincidence, Hey, Shit happens!
You're absolutely right about it sucking the energy right out of the room though.

They'd have been better off playing a supermarket. The sound couldn't have been any worse and I mean they could have played the freezer section and at least we all would have been cool.

Reading about setlists always makes me forget that I never give a shit what they play if I'm actually there.

Rhymin' and Stealin' omgomgomgomgogom sigh.... :) "bucknut and apeshit" is right! That alone was worth the trip. ...and I'd just like to say that these Beastie Brothers sure have some of the coolest fans in the business.

Yup!
I admit that I noticed the sound was weird, but didn't even think about its effect on the show untill everyone started bitchin about it on the interwebs here. Although I must say it wasn't the sound level, it was the mix, sometimes I couldn't here what they were saying into their mics between songs, but from where I was (left side up front) the sound wasn't that bad (read: bad enough for a psyco fan to not enjoy himself). But thats just me.

I know the print in that book I read was illegible,
but only a psycho would complain about the story not being good.
