I don't own any of his albums, so I'm not into it in that way. But I've been watching his clips. Dude is pretty cool, and I found out that he's the former guitarist from Mr Big (Be with You). The following clips are but a small portion of what I've been checking out;

Scarified (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPGA3vjMLgE): this is an instrumental song done by one of his old bands, performed more recently.

3 becomes 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-sy62EIeVo): Spice Girls, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin medley-ish thing. The first couple of minutes are him explaining how he's going to blend them (which elements of each), and the song takes a while to start as a result. I really like it.

I think he's Buckethead. It seems that this is a popularly disparaged opinion in net communities. They're the same age, and Buckethead claims to have taken lessons from Gilbert. They definitely have similar styles, and are both giants.

Buckethead lessons just for comparison. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaCErlW-3p8) Weird fucking dudes (both of them/him), in any case.
