Someone mentioned "Richard" the other day...

Obviously there's "Adolph" and "Judas" and "Nebuchadnezzar" and all.

Wanda
Jedediah
Ulysses
George
Abraham
(hell, most Presidents' names)
Does Iris still get used?
June?
Judith?

I've met a few new parents in recent years (as you might imagine) who have given their children what I had thought of as kind of old-fashioned names. In a way I think some of the old names are making a bit of a resurgence. I mean, when we chose Mathilda, we thought that was kind of old-y and not very popular, but there do now seem to be a fair number of under-5s with the name, albeit usually spelled in the more anglicised Matilda.

The couple across the hall from us have a two month old named Arthur.

One of my close friends had her baby Millicent in January.

I have met two baby Eleanors.

Also of my recent acquaintance: Agatha, Agnes, Wilfred.

I quite like Penelope, but mr.p said no, LOL. I also like Josephine.

I forgot, I have also met a young Martha. And a Silas. And Mattie's got an Aloysius in her class, but he is called "Louie".

Does "Reginald" still get used?

"Ichibod"? :D

Silas?

Oroville is pretty much done, I think. Orin, too.

I met a man named Loris -- I thought that was an odd name.

hpdrifter

I love Josephine. Also love Jaqueline but not the unfortunate diminutive "Jackie".

I think there are lots of pretty names that don't get used much anymore:

Madeline
Bianca (I will name my future daughter this)
Sonia
Ramona

One of my closest friends is called Silas Orion. His parents were hippies.

My name is Edith, its actually Edith Dianna... I was named after my grandmother. I hated it when I was younger because all the girls my age had the cool names, but now I have grown to love my name. I thinks its very old fashioned but at the same time classy and dignified. Plus, no one ever forgets me cause my name's so uncommon, especially among people in their twenties! What about Gertrude?? No ones hears that name these days...

My aunt's name was Eleanor. I like the name Eleanor. I also like Martha, Mary, etc -- all the traditional grown up names for girls.

I definitely think so. Someone a few posts back said "Henry" - Henry is rather trendy at the moment actually, in my experience (and much to my annoyance, as I had planned to use it if I had a boy MY WHOLE LIFE). Also in the UK, it wouldn't be so odd to hear of a little girl named Jemima, but in the US certainly it would lead to endless jokes about maple syrup.

Oh and nothing like Henry, George, Edward or the name of any other english monarch.
The reason is because there is a fairly good chance the baby will have red hair and my friends nephews are called Henry and George and they are both redheads and their nicknames at school are Ging Henry and Ging George. So they are right out.

my paternal grandfather came from a scottish family of 9 boys.

from those 9 boys there was a donald, an angus, and ALSO a donald-angus.

I guess one gets bored of the whole naming process after the first few.

though when my father knew them donald-angus was forever known as "uncle curly" (he was bald), and angus was known as "uncle slim" (he was chubby) and donald stayed "uncle donald".
