I have to agree. People always talk about CHY and how great it is, and IC somehow always gets only a brief mention, sort of as a bland copy of CHY, which couldn't be further from the truth. IC is a totally different brand of funk, more mature, raw, jazzier and the beats are heavier than CHY. I mean I'd rate Sure Shot, Root Down, Do It, Get it Together, Flute Loop, Freak Freak over So Whatcha Want, Pass The Mic, Jimmy James any day. Plus the instrumental tracks are groovier than CHY as well, I mean Ricky's Theme is the ultimate FUNK! I really think the IC era marked their peak, they were in their late 20s/early 30s, heralded as the 'coolest' band on Earth headlining Lollapalooza, setting frashion trends (what with old school Adidas shoes, cool tees and golf polo's, Mike D's blonde hair, skate pants...CHEECH WIZARD!).

You can't sleep on Ill. If it wasn't for PB, to me Ill Communication would easily be their best work ever.

i was just thinking the same thing yesterday-i'd be happy to put I.C pretty much as my favourite album-but it does change from time to time!! Get it together is in my top three favourite tunes for sure

Sabotage, too! I mean, it's a bit obvious and a bit cliche, but it's still a wicked song.

So I totally agree with you, but I think their coolness is a tricky thing to factor in, in terms of how good this album was.
When IC came out I was 19 and to me(and seemingly ALL my hip friends) the Beastie Boys were not only the coolest band on the planet the three of them were the coolest PEOPLE individually as well. They were the face of cool for like 2 years there, not that there not cool now, but it aint even close!
Whats this got to do with anything you ask? (good question, I'm getting to it, hold yer damn horses!) I just can't shake the feeling that the greatness of this album in my and people of a similar "generation"- (Xers or whatever) is as much about this as it is all the dope (& totally right on) points you make about the album sonicly above.
It is no doubt a great album, as I felt all their albums were (at least on some level) but it also represents a moment in both my life and the how they existed in the universe, and those moments are totally intertwined in my head.
I wonder where the younger heads who are psyco fans would rate it. (I think this would be a great poll on here- whats your favorite album and how old are you). I think a lot of them feel the same way about HN or maybe LTI or even TT5B (depending on age).
In terms of favorites I just think its hard to not factor in where you are as a fan or a music listener, and as a person.
I guess I was just talking some shit here (sorry bout the long post). I guess what I meant to say was I agree completely with what you said.

I was in college when IC dropped and I agree 100%, this album gets way less respect than it should. It's like this album was the bboys mad striking when the iron was red HOT. A continuation, a furthering, if you will, of the greatness CYH began.

I was partying so hard in the IC days and got home one night and popped IC in the single CD disc player queued up 'Do It' and hit the repeat button. Passed out. Yep, woke up 7-8hrs later with 'Do It' still playing and a massive hangover to boot! True Story. I think I'z forever changed.

Yeah I was 17 when IC dropped, I thought the Beasties were musical geniuses. I mean how do you combine the rawness of hip hop, jazz and hard core and make it sound so cool was beyond me. It's the one album I can actually listen to without skipping a single track.

Someone mentioned Sabotage. That was actually the first song I heard off the album. I was at an art gallery at the time, when, I guess it must've been the receptionist absolutelly blasted it on their PA, and I was like what the fuck is that, you know totally unexpected, all of a sudden all's you can hear is Adrock screaming off his fucking nut, I was like ok, I think this is the Beastie Boys :). And then followed 4 years of pretty much an absolute obsession.

To be honest, when HN came out I was slightly disappointed, because it was just a totally different record again, but grew to like it over the years.

I love all the albums, but IC has always been my personal favourite since I fully became a massive Beasties fan. And I'm 18, so definitely wasn't clued up at the time. However, I think I got it when I was about 11, and took it back to the shops. Wasn't my thing at all, although I loved Sabotage (they played it at our school disco's a lot).

Then got Sounds of Science when I was about 12 for Christmas as I still had a huge developing interest in the Beasties, and by this point I'd seen the video for Sure Shot on TV and that was my new favourite song. I went back to IC about a year later. Liked it a lot more, but still there was a lot of skipping moments.

Then, by the time I was 15 or so, I'd put it on when doing school art work and stuff, and gradually the genius of it all came through, the mix of styles yet the way it flows, and sounds... Damn, those distorted mic's was like nothing I'd ever heard.

Before I knew it it was essentially my favourite album of all time and I think it will always top my list. Whether it was growing up and starting to appreciate elcecticism (if that's a word) and more music in general, I knew I was into something different and, as has been mentioned, undeniably cool.

Word to that. (y)

I got IC when I was about 11 as well, and I never really appreciated the variety of different sounds and styles found on it up until a few years ago (I'm 15 now).
Until I heard CYH and IC, I was unaware that a mix of hip-hop, punk rock and instrumentals could be put together at all, so much as put together brilliantely as the boys did it.
With that said, IC is definately one of my favorite albums of all time.

Right on!

Spontaneous IC appreciation thread!

Man I fucking love Flute Loop and B-boys getting freaky with the freak freak.

I often find the press under-rating IC in favour of CYH and although it didn't deviate massively from the concept of CYH they were really in a strong place at that time - IC may be a bit less original and creative but it's more polished and confident.

Overall it's a very finished album - if it's only fault is - 'they did another vaguelly similar album 2 years before' then it's pretty faultless in my eyes.

I was 14. I'd heard the three previous BBoy albums but didn't care too much for them. I mean they were good. Great songs, but I didn't DIG them. [ I had LTI on cassette when it came out, what was I 6 maybe?] I was trying to score some weed at the beach, and some older dudes brought me and my friend to their house. They were blasting some sick music. I asked "what's this?"

"New Beastie Boys" was the response and they turned it even more.

Everything changed. I didn't even really care about rap back then. [Excpet Fat Boys Crushin, whole other story] All time fave Bboys album. I think it's the best hip hop they've ever made. Flute Loop Do It, Root Down and Freak Freak = the shit. THE SHIT. Plus the funk is the funkiest.

Yeah. For the record, I got ripped off an the weed. I stopped smoking for the next 5 years because of that. But I got 100% behind Beastie Boys

I like the songs on IC, but I think they went a bit overboard with all the fuzzy effects on the vocals so a good majority of the lines are not understandable because it sounds like they were rapped by someone wearing a gas mask. Do It has perfectly clear vocals, which makes it a brilliant oasis in the middle of a fuzzed out desert.

Sure Shot
Tough Guy
Bobo On The Counter
Root Down
Sabotage
Get It Together
Sabrosa
Futterman's Rule
Eugene's Lament
Do It
Ricky's Theme
Heart Attack Man
Shambala
Transitions

Tracks without the fuzzening, better expressed as 70% of the album. Again, your poor ears.

I thought it was pretty original. I just don't think BBoys Makin with the freak freak would have sounded the same without the fuzz. Another thing, it wasn't a fuzz effect, they actually did use bullshit mics made out of plastic and just came out distorted as fuck, and it sounded cool.

Kinda silly how many of us beastie fans just mosh these two albums together like they're the same thing....
