View Full Version : Theory about bands starting with the word "The"

Most, if not all bands starting with the word "The" in their band name are normally good-sounding. Examples: The Strokes, The Hives, The Cure, The Who, and more recently, The White Stripes, and The Raconteurs. Perhaps it's a form of status that signify that the band members are talented individuals dedicated to making great, quality music in their bands. Thoughts?

I know not what you speak of.

Anyway, more "The" bands that I got into: The Dirtbombs, The Shys, The Parlor Mob, The Wildbirds, and The Kills. All a part of the Garage Band Revival. Droppin, drop some knowledge on this. You would know.

I personally totally dislike most of the recent "The XXX" bands. I think that the put a "the" just to signify that they all pretty much sound the same :D

The The.

But seriously, there was a theory floating around circa 2001 that if you tacked a 'The' onto your name, you could join the post-modern garage band phase that seemed to be the thing du jour.

I think people have put too much thought into "The" bands. I guess with the garage rock revival in the early '00s, most if not all of the bands in that scene had a "The" in the name, which gave lazy journalists something to talk about, but it's really nothing more. There was even minor backlash towards putting a "The" in your band name.

I mean, were people focusing that much on "The" bands in the '60s like The Beatles, The Kinks, etc. I don't recall anyone having to ask John Lennon to explain the "The" in their band name, so why start now?

I think there's two sort of types of "The" names. Ones where the band deliberately put a "the" at the beginning to fit into a certain idiom - and names where "the" is really just there because it sounds silly when you say the name without the conjunction.

Most of the time, in conversation or other, I find it weird just saying Beastie Boys.
